When I first entered the IB Visual Arts course I never believed that it would be so easy to me to be creative in differ-ent ways both in two dimensional and three dimensional media. I learnt to become inspired by another artist’s work, which changed the original direction of my work. I was surprised to be making paintings. I always thought of myself being more of a 3D person. However, my first attempts at creating Abstract Expressionist canvases with layers of paint and masking tape, that create multiple surfaces, made me realise how much I enjoy painting and how much I can ex-press myself through it. This comes through even in the observational still lives I have painted and in the more expres-sive portraits I have done. The art movement, which was my basic inspiration for the last two years, was Expressionism and the main artist influ-ences came from Kathe Kollowitz, Munch, Richter and Emil Nolde. But the artist that I distinguish from all the others and helped me more than any other in my personal work is Sakay-an, because of the way he uses colour and depicts facial expressions which communicates to the viewer a clear emo-tional direction. Most of my final pieces are portrayals of women in angst, my personal depictions of grief and loss, as I have personally experienced a very significant loss in the last year. This triggered a large series of works, mainly in two dimensions, but as I realised later, my three dimensional faces in mixed media, with pins, screws and melted wax, are all the product of my personal life experiences.
