• The different dimensions of sustainability and how it relates to

environmental management.

• Introduction to research methods in order to equip students with the

adequate knowledge and skills to plan research, and write a research

o Module Aim:

• To introduce students to the basic theory and procedures of GIS.

o Main themes:

• The concept of GIS.

• Data capturing, databases and data management.

• Interpretation and mapping of spatial data.

• Basic spatial analysis (vector and raster)

o Module Aim:

• The main purpose of this module is to introduce you to various spatial

analysis techniques and modelling processes.

oMain themes:

• Evaluation of spatial data for use in spatial analysis.

• Advanced spatial analysis and modelling techniques and methods.

• E.g. Multi criteria analysis, 3D analysis, Network Analysis

• The limitations of GIS and GIS analysis.

OMBE 625 - Introduction to Hydrology and Integrated Water Resources Management

o Module Aim:

• Understanding effective integrated water resource management of scarce water resources in light of the principles of equity, sustainability and efficiency.

o Main themes:

• Water policy, water law and water resources management in South Africa.

• Strategies for water resources management.

• Applied hydrology, e.g.:

• Catchment delineation.

• Runoff modelling.

• Streamflow modelling.

• Water use licensing.

o Module Aim:

• To provide students with an opportunity to extend some of the concepts, principles, topics and tools that are used in Environmental Management and to apply these in real world scenarios.

specifically EIA as an environmental management decision-support

instrument.

• Methods and procedures in Environmental assessment.

• Environmental assessment at the strategic level.

o Module Aim:

• This module intends to introduce students to the instruments and technologiesthat scientists employ to study earth system processes (includes remote sensing and in-situ instruments).

o Main Themes:

• Principles and fundamentals of earth observation.

• Earth observation platforms systems.

• Uncertainty in earth observation.

• Analytical procedures in earth observation.

• The concept of integrative sensing (integrating measurement from different sensors).
