The Benefits of Solitude Does being alone have to mean loneliness? Not necessarily. In fact, there is a good chance we all could use a certain amount of solitude. How much time do you spend alone, and how do you use this solitude? If you live with others, time alone may sometimes seem like a precious commodity. However, it is important that you arrange to have some time alone, now and then. Not just a few minutes or hours, either, but a significant chunk of time you can call your own. If you live alone, you may feel isolated and lonely. Perhaps you try to fill your time with company or busy-work to keep yourself distracted. With hundreds of cable channels and the endless labyrinth of the internet, it's pretty easy to keep oneself distracted. Solitude, if you use it wisely, presents some wonderful opportunities for self- knowledge and growth that you really can't get in any other way. Time alone, spent positively and thoughtfully, gives us a chance to explore our own values, develop a personal philosophy, and discover what is really important to us, without having to contend with other people's expectations. Now, this isn't something you can do in one sitting and it's not necessarily easy either. But it is exciting and meaningful, and when you ask yourself the right questions, the answers you come up with can change your life. For example, what contribution do you want to make to the world? What is missing in your life? What is there too much of? What are your passions, what really gives you joy? Where is your life out of balance? What would you like to accomplish before you die? Perhaps now would be a good time to set aside some moments of solitude and let those things you've been pushing away - because you have told yourself that "I don't have time right now" - come to the surface. Let go of any fear or trepidation. Give those things you've been pushing away some thought-time, and perhaps allow an insight or two to see the light of day. Getting to know yourself takes time, but it's almost a guarantee that the effort you make will be well worth it. You might even discover a new best friend. (The Pacific Institute® www.pacificinstitute.co.uk) During this time of holiday with your daughters I trust that you will all find time for reflection. May those who have leave from work now have a wonderful time of rest and those who continue to work, find some time to re-energise themselves. BAXTER BIG BAND

JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival took place at the Baxter Theatre in June. On the evening of Friday 5 June, the WGHS Jazz Band waited anxiously backstage for their twenty minutes of fame.

The Grade 12 Consumer Studies Practical exam had two parts to it. In the first, they chose a recipe based on the Entrepreneurship Project done in the first term. One of the main criteria was the marketability of their finished and packaged products. In the second exam they made and decorated eclairs.

GRADE 12 CONSUMER PRAC

This festival is hosted annually by UCT and allows various jazz bands to showcase their talent. It is, without a doubt, the most important event on our Jazz Band’s calendar, and based on the feedback from the audience, it was evident that they gave a noteworthy performance. The repertoire of the band included Save the Last Dance by Mort Shuman, I just called to say I love you by Stevie Wonder, L-O-V-E by Natalie Cole and Beyond the Sea by Jack Lawrence. The songs included various soloists, amongst them Saskia de Villiers on the alto sax and Hongju Nam on the flute. Congratulations to the band and thank you to conductor, Ms Dayna Pearce, whose input and mentorship has played a huge role in their success.

CHESS We congratulate Muminah Salie who participated at the Western Cape Schools’ Chess Trials. She played matches against chess players from the Winelands, the Overberg, the West Coast and South Western Districts. Muminah was awarded Western Province (Regional) Schools’ Colours.

SAILING

In 2014 Sarah-Jane competed in the Tera World Championships that were held at Swartvlei. She was the 2nd girl at this event and has been invited to the 2015 event in the Netherlands next term.

STILL PLAYING - IN TRIPLICATE

Elsa Nel, Lauren McDonald and Carla Stokes are currently studying but have continued to play in Triplet, the group they started while at WGHS. Recently they performed at the NG Kerk in Wynberg.

The arrival of the 3D printer has created quite a buzz in Mrs Moerat’s laboratory and is an absolute hit with the girls!Mrs Moerat has been introducing classes to the 3D printer and showing them how it works. Some girls have even used it in their Science projects. Currently, Mrs Moerat and Mr Simons have been looking at acquiring a couple of programmes for the printer in order to make it even more ‘useful’. One of these programmes has to do with design and another allows the printing of larger objects. The object is printed in parts and can then be glued together. Watch this space for more developments!

SQUASH

The 2nd Squash team played against Westerford on 29 May. The team was made up of Nhadia Gustavo, Taylor Brooks, Brittney Blackburn and Alice Weng. Although they all fought bravely for every point, they unfortunately lost the match. The highlight of the afternoon was Nhadia's match: it was filled with intense rallies, lots of running and many great shots from both players.

On 12 June, the 2nd Squash team played an exciting game against Springfield. The team consisted of Brittney Black-burn, Taylor Brooks, Tenike Stoltz and Inge Tripod.

On 30 May, the WGHS U14A and U16A teams competed in the Top Schools Netball competition and although both teams did not qualify for the next round, it was an excellent experience for them to play against the top Northern Suburbs netball schools.

U16A: Wynberg won 12-6.After a slow start, the girls picked up their game and played very well until the final whistle. Players of the Match were Michaela Pinkham and Sarah Underwood.U16B: Wynberg won 16-9.Our girls played extremely well as a team, leading 6-3 at the half time whistle. Player of the Match was Tayob Harrison, who did an excellent job of intercepting many of Monument's centre passes.U16C: Wynberg won 26-4.The game started off with a bang as the team scored 20 goals in the first half! Player of the Match was Naomi Simpson.U19A: Wynberg lost 9-34.Monument Park were definitely the stronger team on the day, something the U19 A team can aspire to become. Player of the Match was Asanda Masoka for staying positive, encouraging team spirit and playing some beautiful netball.U19B: Wynberg lost 17-22.There were so many nail-biting moments in the game as the girls contested every ball. Even though Wynberg did not win, they played beautifully, pulling together as a team to get back into the game after struggling in the beginning.

2nd team: Wynberg won 2-1.It was a very entertaining game and the team played good hockey. Goals were scored by Lauren Gilbert and Zoe Koff.U16A team: Wynberg lost 0-1.Wynberg had numerous opportunities to score but did not do so. Then Bellville caught us on the quick counter-attack to score the only goal of the match.U16B team: Wynberg drew 0-0.The game did not go to plan as Bellville were equally strong. U14A team: Wynberg drew 1-1.The team played some good constructive hockey setting up goal-scoring opportunities. Tatum Knipe scored the opening goal. Unfortunately a quick Bellville free hit resulted in the equaliser being scored. Player of the Match was Razaan Green who did a sterling job at the back, making some vital tackles to deny the opposition more goals.U14B team: Wynberg drew 0-0.Wynberg played a strong attacking game, dominating Bellville throughout the game. The girls kept Bellville in their own half for most of the game, constantly applying pressure. The few times that Bellville did get through, our defenders, plus goalkeeper, Aurielle, dealt with them effectively. However, in spite of all the pressure, Wynberg was unable to score. Many shots were saved or went wide. They team were communi-cating better and it was unfortunate that they weren't able to win this one.

HOCKEY RESULTS

MATCHES vs BELLVILLE : 6 JUNE

MATCHES vs STELLENBERG : 29 & 30 MAY

1st team: Wynberg lost 1-2.The first team played an extremely competitive match but unfortunately lost. Stellenberg scored early and were 2-0 up at half time. Wynberg fought back, especially in the second half, and Katherine Nicholls scored off a short corner. It was a tough game - both teams had great turnovers and tackles and Wynberg had some very close deflections. 3rd team: Wynberg lost 0-3.The team were not playing to their full potential. U16A team: Wynberg drew 0-0.The teamwork, spirit and skills have improved dramatically, mostly due to perseverance at every practice. The dedication shown by the girls has truly paid off. U16B team: Wynberg won 3-1.This team had an excellent match against Stellenberg. The girls played to their strengths and there were some great shots at goal. Kawthar Gameeldien and Megan Gierdien scored in the first half. Stellenberg made it 2-1 but in the second half, Farah Isaacs scored off a great cross shot. Jamie Crowie was Player of the Match.U16D team: Wynberg won 1-0.The team had the majority of possession in the first half and plenty of opportunities to score. Player of the match, Chelsea van Heerden, scored a goal. Our defence and goalkeeper cleared every ball out of the circle in this action-filled match. U14A team: Wynberg lost 0-1.Unfortunately this score does not truly reflect the way the team performed. Wynberg dominated possession, played some lovely hockey but just couldn't finish off the many opportunities they created. They switched the play well, providing good ball to the links and forwards. The strikers put themselves into good scoring positions but tended to panic when in front of the goals. Hunger in the circle was lacking at times, but never heart.

MATCHES : 13 JUNE

1st Team: Wynberg won 2-1.This was a very tense match. Tygerberg scored first but Wynberg picked up their drive and energy levels and scored two goals to win the match. This win has been brewing for a long time and was their first of the season. The first goal was scored by Amina Williams; the second by Sasha Sivertsen, from a short corner, in the last minute of the game, which made it very exciting!

The U16A team celebrate their victory!

U16A: Wynberg won 3-0.The team had the majority of the possession, many short corners and a couple of very close chances and finally scored in the second half - Aaliah Dollie. The second was scored by Caitlin Thomson and the third by Saarah Smith from a successful short corner shot. Aaliah Dollie was Player of the Match.U16E Team: Wynberg drew 0-0.The girls did not communicate well in the first half and missed many opportunities because of this. The girls played a good game overall and were equally matched by their opponents. Player of the Match was Aniqah Brenner. U14A: Wynberg won 7-0.The team played some good structural hockey and created many scoring opportunities. Tatum Knipe scored a good rebound goal and after half time they went on to score another six goals. Good passing and good defence by the strikers and links kept the ball in our attacking zone. Jess Austin was Player of the Match for her defensive work. This was a well deserved win for the team.

HECTIC 9 VISIT WYNBERG

The Hectic 9 TV crew arrived at the WGHS Consumer Studies department on 29 May to film a segment for their show. Their theme was “All about Gen-Z” and they focused on one of the characteristics of Generation Z: they are big foodies! Courtney Wray and Robyn Williams prepared their favourite dishes while the presenter asked them where their passion for food came from, why they enjoyed cooking, where they learned to cook, why they Instagram pictures of their food, what some of their favourite cooking shows are, and why they believe Gen Z are foodies. Courtney and Robyn prepared Bobotie Wontons, much to the delight of the TV crew who enjoyed samples at the end of filming. The show was aired on Tuesday 2 June on SABC 2 and our girls really did Wynberg and Ms Witthuhn proud. If you missed it, the link can be found on the school website: www.wynghs.co.za.
