EMERGENCY?
DIAL 911!
From time to time, Pinewood Fire District needs to remind our res-
idents and visitors of the importance of dialing 911 when they
experience an emergency.
Too often, instead of just dialing 911, folks come to our station
when they need assistance with medical issues. This can be inef-
fective time wise and downright dangerous if firefighters are out of
the station and unavailable to help you.
911 systems have been used by emergency response agencies
nationwide since 1968. Pinewood Fire contracts with a 911 call
center that is staffed 24 hours, 365 days a year. By using 911, you
are ensuring the quickest, most efficient way to reach response
crews at any time of any day.
Our firefighters have numerous job duties, many of which can take
them away from the station. In the event you call 911 when crews
are out, they are alerted by radio through the dispatch system and
then will promptly respond to your emergency. If you don’t utilize
911, instead opting to go to the fire station, precious time may be
spent trying to make contact with responders and your care may be
delayed.
Another item that is important to remember is that Pinewood Fire
does not have a ‘walk-in’ clinic. Many folks come to the station to
be “checked out”, or to ask for medical services that we do not
provide. Our crews are unable to treat and release. In most cases
when we provide medical services, we strongly recommend the
patient be transported via ambulance to the hospital.
Please remember, if you are having a medical emergency or need
the fire department’s help, please just dial 911. Our dispatch sys-
tem is the best way for us to deliver the assistance you need in the
fastest and most efficient manner.
REMINDER FROM PFD:
Look for this Fire Danger Sign in front of the Shell Station
THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!
It only takes one spark on dry grass, leaves, branches or pine needles to start a wild-
fire. Even live trees and brush are dry enough to easily ignite. Wildfires impact
recreation areas and may destroy homes and cabins, and threaten lives.
Chainsaws, dragging trailer safety chains, carelesssly tossed cigarettes, fireworks,
abandoned campfires, and discharge of firearms are all known causes of wildfire.
Warn others of potential dangers and behaviors that may start wildfires.
REPORT ALL WILDFIRES TO 911

HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR SMOKEDETECTORS LATELY??
Munds Park Community WatchBy Len Friedlund
Previous articles have talked about when pedestrians are walking along
our roadways in the park, they should be “walking against traffic.”
Approaching vehicles might not be heard and the walkers can be surprised
with possible injuries accuring to them including dogs and children. Last
year, I was going up Crestline between Pinewood Blvd and Midway when I
came upon six or seven adults with four or five small children walking on
my side of the road. The adults did not hear me approaching them and the
children were running around weaving back and forth in my lane. I stopped
at the first couple of adults and suggested that they walk on the opposite side
of the road but there was no change in their position nor an attempt to corral
the kids to the shoulder. A vehicle certainly has the right-of-way since there
was no cross walk or intersection situation but drivers should adopt a cau-
tious attitude and protective position by slowing down whenever overtaking
walkers even though they are on your side of the road.
Our roadways are pretty narrow in most places so it is even more impor-
tant to walk facing traffic so that walkers can see approaching vehicles. And
the shoulders cannot be widened because of the original design of the lots.
There are a several “race ways” here in the park; Pinewood Blvd, Hillside,
Oak, and Cedar Wood provide nice straight stretches for motorists to make
up for lost time by speeding! The speed limit in the entire park is 25 MPH;
if you live 1.5 miles from I-17, which is the average distance, you can save
just under a minute by driving 35 MPH. Consider the consequences of
unsafe driving with possible injury to pedestrians just to save a minute not to
mention the possibility of a speeding ticket which would really make you
late to work!
Then there are the ATV’s, side by sides, razors, and whatever you call
those noisy things. We see not only speeding but numerous violations
involving those vehicles. Children under 16 who cannot be driving because
you must have a license, multiple riders on a one rider vehicle, and children
under 18 without helmets. Then throw in the non-licensed vehicles and
those without all of the things to make them legal. Some vehicles require
seat belts and the number one unsafe practice in my book—a very young
child riding on the gas tank in front of his adult driver! These vehicles
always produce many serious injuries during the summer and a few years
ago, on the day of the parade, a young lady had to be air-evacuated after she
tumbled from her ATV on Pinewood Blvd and Raintree.
All drivers should be aware of the pedestrians and you ATV’ers are all
cautioned to obey the rules so we don’t have any regrets for our
actions….think SAFETY.
The next MPCW meeting will be on November 20, 2019, 6:30pm, at the
PFD station, weather dependent. Invited guests include personnel from the
CCSO, Coconino National Forest, National Weather Service, Emergency
Management, and Public Works along with Supervisor Matt Ryan. There is
information for the program utilizing the PPOA website www.pinewoodp-
poa.org and clicking on the MPCW tab. The PPOA supports the MPCW
program with funds to cover most of the costs associated with the program.

National Potato Month is always September, butNational Potato Day is in October. Oh, and February isNational Potato Lovers Month! Don’t ask me toexplain it. Just know that somebody got it right to cel-ebrate the wonderful potato more than once.
While I generally enjoy baked sweet potatoes morethan a white one, there are just some foods, like asucculent steak, that calls for white potatoes with allthe goodies.
Potato Bar for One or a CrowdI have lots of ways to prepare potatoes. One way I
serve them is for a potato bar dinner for the two of us.Each person gets one potato and puts on toppings ofchoice.
This idea would make for a lovely neighborhoodgathering. You bake/roast/slow cook a bunch of pota-toes and let the neighbors bring the toppings like:crumbled bacon, steamed broccoli, Greek yogurt(more healthful than sour cream), shredded cheddarcheese, melted cheese, queso dip, crushed red pep-per, black beans, barbecue sauce, chili with or withoutbeans, taco meat, butter, and oh, so many otheroptions!
To make potatoes for a crowd, check out thisrecipe for slow cooker roasting. It says no foil needed, but I crumple some on the bottom and rest the pota-toes on that. Much quicker than foil wrapping eachpotato. Scrub the potatoes clean and cook on low for6-8 hours until the potatoes are tender. She recom-mends red or gold potatoes, but use whatever youhave.
http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/how-to-bake-potatoes-in-a-crock-pot-without-foil
Hubs loves my rustic potato soup that has potatoskin in it. It is chunky, not totally smooth and has lotsof flavor. This recipe is very forgiving in ingredientamounts so use what you have. Like more onion, addit. Fewer potatoes makes a thinner soup. Only one canof evaporated milk? Fine for thicker soup. Experiment!
Smashed Potato Soup (serves 6-8)½ large yellow onion, diced2 tablespoons butter5 baked potatoes2 cans evaporated milk1 ½ cans water¼ cup plain Greek yogurt Salt and pepper to taste½ cup shredded cheese (optional)
Saute the onions in the butter on very low heat.
Cut each already-baked potato in half. Scoop outthe insides of three potatoes (leaving a half inch ofpotato on the sides) and set aside the six skins. Putthe potato into the pot with the onions and butter.
Using your hands and a large knife smash theremaining two potatoes until flattened. Cut up thesmashed halves with the knife, skins and all. Makebite sized bits and add to the pot.
Add the evaporated milk and water. Stir thoroughlyand smash any potato bits that seem too large to eatwith a spoon. Add salt and pepper and cook over amedium-low heat until the soup reaches a simmer.
Add the yogurt right before serving and stir thor-oughly to blend. If you want potato-cheese soup addit now. Serve while bubbly hot.
Potato Skins (makes six)Remember those potato skins I had you put aside
from the potato soup? Make an appetizer of them by
loading each skin with cheese and onions and putting
them under the broiler for a few minutes. Serve with
Greek yogurt and/or salsa for a quick and easy tasty
treat.
Sharon’s Easy-Peasy Potatoes Au Gratin
(serves 6)
4 medium to large potatoes
1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese
+ more if needed
¾ cup milk
Salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put non-stick cooking
spray in a 9x12” baking dish. Put ¼ cup milk in the bot-
tom of the pan and sprinkle on ¼ cup cheese.
After washing the potatoes, slice each potato,
skin on, into slices about ¼” thick.
Cover the bottom of the baking dish with a layer of
potatoes. Sprinkle on salt and pepper. Sprinkle on
some cheese and a splash of milk. Continue layering
until all the potatoes, cheese and milk are gone. If the
cheese is thinly layered, add more so the whole top
will be cheesey.
Bake for 45 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and
browned and the potatoes are tender.
NOTE: Sometimes I cut an onion into slices and add
them to the layers of potatoes.
When we’re having a fancy-schmancy dinner, this
Quick Cook will take the time to do something a bit
more time-consuming, but not too much so! I want it
to look like I spent days cooking, but not really to do
that! My standard potato dish for that impression is
Hasselback Potatoes. The time is spent slicing the
potatoes almost through to the bottom, but not quite,
then carefully spreading the slices apart for the
cheese and butter. It’s a pretty effect after baking.
Hasselback Potatoes (per person)
1 potato per person
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 tablespoon grated parmesan cheese + more
for sprinkling on top
(Yep, for this recipe I use the Kraft green container)
Coat the size baking dish you’ll need for all the
potatoes with non-stick cooking spray.
On a cutting board with a very sharp knife, cut
each potato into ¼” slices down almost to the bottom.
You want the potato to be intact but with slices you
can fan out.
Cover the potato with the butter, making sure each
slice is coated. Sprinkle the tablespoon grated within
and on top of each slice.
Place all potatoes in the baking dish. Sprinkle on
more grated parmesan cheese and bake for one hour.

“Take a picture of me in front of the Hoover Dam,” I urge the Desert Adventures van
driver, my hand shaking just a smidge. Was the tremor from the fear that he might drop my
new camera into the water? Or from the thrill of standing next to the mighty Colorado
River gushing from one of the engineering marvels of
the world? All-in-all, it is quite a spectacular photo op
with the nation’s highest arch suspension bridge, the
Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, looming overhead, and
the nation’s largest concrete dam positioned as the
backdrop.
Kayak Hoover Dam Tour Photo Op
I was in the Hoover Dam high security zone, ready
to “put in” for my kayak Hoover Dam tour, and
because the federal guard wanted us in the water
and headed downstream as soon as possible, I was
anxious about lingering. Consequently, I didn’t dou-
ble-check the image captured by the driver before we
left the spot. Later, when downloading the photo, I
find that he took a picture of me literally “in front” of the Hoover Dam – I was blocking any
view of the giant structure. The photo’s all UNSTOPPABLE Stacey and no dam. Damn!
“Hard hats were invented specifically for
Hoover Dam workers,” explains our Desert
Adventures guide once we get our kayaks in
the water. “That was back in 1933 when the
dam in front of you was the largest dam ever
built.” My husband, Dan, and I have visited
the Hoover Dam many times, but we’ve
never seen the mightiest of dams from the
seat of a tiny kayak. The massive structure
looms above us as we paddle against the cur-
rent at the toe of the dam. The new, awe-
some perspective pretty much blows me
away. I’m feeling quite vulnerable and
insignificant, and my novice arms ache struggling to paddle against the flow.
Hoover Dam Kayak Tour: As close to the bottom of the dam as is legally possible
Outfitter Desert Adventures had procured permits for the Hoover Dam security area,
escorted us through security checks, locked gates and finally to the launch site at the foot
of the Hoover Dam. Our guide, Gary, lets go a floodgate of information about our Hoover
Dam kayak tour.
“You are as close to the bottom of the dam as is legally possible,” smiles the river-run-
ner, already a veteran in his late twenties. As we paddle down the Colorado River through
Black Canyon, it becomes evident that he knows much about the geology, flora and fauna
of the area, and more importantly, the locations of all the hot springs hidden in secret side
canyons.
I Survived Kayaking the Hoover Dam
This is how you, too, can kayak
the Hoover Dam

Why 178? A guide to interstate exit numbering
By David Rookhuyzen / ADOT Communications
Have you ever wondered why 411th Avenue in Tonopah is Exit 95 off
Interstate 10? Or why if you are turning on to Dragoon Road in southeastern
Arizona you take Exit 318?
Or how about using Exit 67 to get to Dateland from Interstate 8, or Exit 322
on Interstate 17 to get to Munds Park?
The answer is deceptively simple: It's all about mileposts.
So, quick background: Mileposts for an interstate start at "0" at either the
western or southern state line, and increase as you head in the opposite
direction, according to the Federal Highway Administration's page on its
website (link is external) about the interstate system. (The exception in
Arizona being I-17 doesn't start at "0" because it took over its alignment and
mileposts from the original State Route 69, but that's another story.)
As you head either east or north, the first exit you come to is numbered by
the milepost immediately west or south of it. So if an exit is at milepost 8.7,
it would be signed as Exit 8. If the next is at milepost 15.2, it will be Exit 15.
And so on and so forth. And in case there are multiple exits at the same
junction, like in the photo here, you use sequential letters to differentiate the
ramps.
Sounds simple, right?
Except that's not
always true country-
wide. Some states,
mostly in the East,
don't use a milepost
numbering system but
rather a consecutive
numbering system for
their exits. So, com-
ing from the west or
south the first exit will always be Exit 1 and the next – no matter how far
away – would be Exit 2.
However, the milepost system (or properly the reference location system) is
the Federal Highway Administration's preferred way of numbering exits. In
the 2009 revision of the Manual of Unified Traffic Control Devices (the fed-
eral guidelines for all things highways such as signs, pavement markers, sig-
nals, etc.), language was added saying, "Interchange exit numbering shall
use the reference location sign exit numbering method. The consecutive exit
numbering method shall not be used."
In Section 2E.31, paragraphs 4 and 5 (link is external), the manual goes onto
say why FHWA prefers this over the consecutive method: "Reference loca-
tion sign exit numbering assists road users in determining their destination
distances and travel mileage, and assists highway agencies because the exit
numbering sequence does not have to be changed if new interchanges are
added to a route"

Original Pinewood Theater Group Provides Unique CulturalOpportunities for the Community
Pinewood Players is a non-profit organization committed to the goal of increas-
ing exposure to the performing arts in the community by presenting plays, sponsor-
ing workshops, Youth Theater, Reader’s Theater and providing multiple opportuni-
ties for the community to learn about and participate in various aspects of live the-
ater.
Pinewood Players membership is open to the public meaning that everyone in the
Munds Park community is invited and welcomed into our membership.
Membership dues are $10 per year for singles and $18 per year for families. You do
not have to act to be a part of this friendly group of folks and participate in the fun
and camaraderie.
Pinewood Players performances are open to everyone in the Munds Park com-
munity and surrounding areas. We welcome everyone to experience the ambiance
of the Pinewood Playhouse and to enjoy the incredible productions of our amateur
theater group (amateur only because our casts and crews are volunteers, not paid
performers). The quality of Pinewood Players productions and the theater experi-
ence equals and in most cases surpasses what can be experienced in amateur the-
ater across northern Arizona and even in many valley venues.
Pinewood Players has a long standing tradition of providing opportunities for the
youth of the community to learn about the performing arts by participating in
drama camps that are open to the entire community. All youngsters between the
ages of 7 and 18 are invited and encouraged to participate. No child has ever been
turned away from a Pinewood Players Drama Camp. Given the Pinewood Playhouse
venue, access to professional equipment, experienced support staff and abundant
staging resources provided by the organization, the Pinewood Players Drama Camp
experience exceeds any and all opportunities for the youth theater experience
available in the community. As an added bonus, participants in two or more
Pinewood Players Drama Camps become eligible for the Pinewood Players
Scholarship Program which awards $2000 scholarships to up to two deserving stu-
dents each year who have ties to the Munds Park community and meet academic
and other program requirements regardless of their choice of higher education
focus.
Pinewood Players provides a venue in the Pinewood Playhouse that is
unmatched in the community and outlying areas. Theater seating and professional
lighting and sound systems provide a complete theater experience making the
Pinewood Playhouse an unequaled facility and a unique asset to the Munds Park
community. If you are new to the community or have just never taken the time to
visit the Playhouse, Pinewood Players will be offering open house theater tours, ice
cream, cake and free entertainment monthly next season to celebrate our 30th
anniversary. Plan to join us! Dates and times will be announced so stay tuned.
We encourage everyone to experience the original Pinewood theater group,
Pinewood Players next season and join us in the celebration of our 30th continuous
season of providing entertainment and cultural opportunities to the community.
Visit our web site at www.pinewoodplayers.com for more information.
COLOR ME !!
Arizona law enforcement, firefighters, and military personnel (active and
retired), family and supporters are invited to recreate the 110 flights of stairs
(2071 steps) climbed by New York City Firefighters during the attacks on the
World Trade Center. We will honor all those who gave their lives on that fateful
day and all those who continue to serve our country, domestically and abroad.
This year we anticipate 500 individuals will take the challenge. Proceeds will
benefit the 100 Club of Arizona (provides support to the families of police & fire
personnel seriously injured or killed in the line of duty, www.100club.org) and
Fighter Country Partnership (provides support to the men, women, families and
mission of Luke Air Force Base, www.fighercountry.org).

ASHES TO ASHES: 10 WAYS TO GOBy Pam Keating
Dave’s ashes came home in a tasteful, Persian blue box with a sealed plastic bag of
powder inside. Considering it’s only a third of him, it’s quite heavy at two and a half
pounds. His two daughters requested the other shares of him.
I’ve dealt with ashes before: my parents and another Phoenix friend. I still have my
parents’ now-empty urn. It was decided they would like to join the Sonoran desert
they so frequently hiked. And another confession: we took a small bottleful and sur-
reptitiously dumped it behind the bench we donated in their honor at the Botanical
gardens. That all was done in honor of their lives.
My sister has her husband in her clothes closet where she thinks of him daily as
she dresses. That is how she honors him.
I googled other options, knowing I would find the right one for Dave. The choices
are many. And interesting to say the least.
There’s a water-soluble urn which sinks and dissolves in whatever body of water
you choose. Dave wasn’t a water baby.
If you have lots of time and money, there is a compression treatment that creates
a diamond-like gem. It’s a carbon thing.
Ashes can be scattered anywhere, maybe not totally legally, but one admonition
when exposing ashes to air: there a wind factor. My sister’s mother-in-law, a native
Phoenician, was taken onto Camelback Mountain and distributed, only to have most
of her blow back onto my sister’s Camelback Mountain house. Another friend, a pilot,
was given a final ride in his favorite single engine aircraft, poured out the cockpit side
window, only to be pushed back in coating the people inside. Uncontained ashes are
tough to regulate.
I’ve read of two other atmospheric options. One is being packed into a pyrotechnic
device, a firework, and shot off, exploding in a burst of color and noise. SpaceX, a
missile industry, offers into space flight for $5,000 a gram. Pricey, but you’re perma-
nently part of our galaxy.
Ashes can be sprinkled atop a to-be-pressed vinyl record of a favorite recording. I
regret not having Dave’s’ wonderful baritone on tape for that. My skeptic friend also
questioned how I’d know it was truly his ashes. Silly me, I’d just pay up and trust.
There’s a line of jewelry charms available on-line, in any symbol you want. A lot are
religious. They are hollow. They come with a minute funnel to insert in a screw hole.
You pour fine ashes in. Then you seal the hole with a minute screw. You still have
quite a lot left over to deal with in this option.
Ashes can be stirred into tattoo ink. You get to choose the artwork.
There’s a company that markets bamboo cups stacked with loam, fertilizer, the
tree seed of your choice and you add your ash layer. Water it, give it time and hope-
fully get a sprout. When it’s viable, plant the biodegradable cup and, voile, a memo-
rial tree.
My favorite one I would certainly consider is having the ashes stirred into molten
glass and blown into glass art. A set of martini glasses would be appropriate for Dave.
Here’s the one Dave would favor: mix him well with the divot repair sand that rides
in a bottle on each golf cart and pour as needed. He could give back to the golf
course that took such a beating from him over the years.
All the above are possible. The one I’m choosing and it’s for both of us: Dave had a
favorite saying posted at both homes.”When I die, bury my balls next to my old bag.”
Here he is:
It’s an empty 1969 Ballantine Whisky decanter. Perfect for fulfilling
his wishes and in sight for me.

Talking With Trees
When I walk our forest, after several years in Munds, I’m greeted by old tree
friends, each a member of a community. I know their common names, and
the secret names they have taught me.
Would you like to learn them?
It all started with an interesting class I took a year before last. One of our as-
signments was to create “subversive magic” in the mundane world. In other
words, to expose people to magical experiences without them actually be
aware of it.
For my assignment, I painted rocks. Some had pictures—fairies, crows, a
dragon, pine trees and puffy clouds. Others had sayings. “As above, so below,”
“Blessed Be,” “Magic surrounds you,” “Wyrd” and “Forest Goddess.” Still
others had short messages in runes, Theban and sigils. I would put a few
rocks in my pocket when I went out to hike, and would leave them hidden in
plain sight for other hikers to discover. They’re all gone now. Did you find
one?
After a few weeks of this, some of the trees began to give me reproachful looks
as I passed them. What about me? They seemed to say. I want an offering too.
Let me leave a message for the human visitors!
I made a point of stopping at those trees. I sat at their base, or leaned against
them, my cheek to the bark. “Do you have a secret name or message you’d
like to share?” I’d whisper. I got a lot of replies. I mean, a LOT.
I haven’t had the chance to paint a special rock for each tree yet. It’s now
clear that my assignment will be continuing into next year. But here are a few
names the trees shared (all of these trees are along the Mud Tank trail, by the
way).
“Circle Elder”
“Witchwood”
“Lantern Holder”
Shadow Man
Pondorosa Strongbark
Finding Your Tree
You may want to begin by selecting a species, and then finding an individual
tree that calls to you. Different tree species work with different human energy
patterns.
Like me, you may find that a specific species has already chosen you! When I
starting spending time in Northern Arizona, I was sure that the quaking As-
pens, with their golden fall leaves and white bark, would be my best friends.
Instead, they’ve been indifferent.
When we built our cabin, I did a tree spirit blessing, asking the forest to ac-
cept their newest human neighbors and keep us all safe. Part of that blessing
included scattering seeds and corn around the perimeter of the property (the
crows loved that part), and keeping a pine branch on the roof for a full moon
cycle.
It must have worked. Ever since we moved in, the Ponderosa Pines have
talked to me incessantly. It’s clear we’ve been adopted.
When you have found a tree, approach it slowly and allow the tree an oppor-
tunity to resist you. You may find you don’t feel comfortable there after all,
and that’s okay. Move on. When you do find the right tree, take some time to
get acquainted. Gently touch the leaves, and let the tree know you’d like to
befriend it. Sometimes walking around the tree slowly clockwise, spiraling in-
ward to the trunk, is a way to gently attract the tree spirit’s attention.

Travel continued from page 16
Wonky Wittig Weather“The weather predictions for our two-day trip have changed slightly. We’re
supposed to get high winds at 8:00 tomorrow morning, so we’ll do most of
our paddling today to avoid the headwinds. Then tomorrow we can spend
more time hiking and exploring an abandoned homestead. Sound OK to
you?” he asks.
“Sounds like a plan, but I have to warn you now,” says Dan. “Our friends say,
‘The weather always goes wonky when you go with the Wittig’s.’ We’ve
ended up in epic hail storms on top of the San Francisco Peaks, hiked down
ice paths on the desert’s edge of the Grand Canyon and driven through
floodwaters in Death Valley.”
Kayak Hoover Dam Black Canyon The first stop on our Kayak Hoover Dam Black Canyon journey is only a few
hundred yards downstream from the launch site. We hike up to a small
opening in the rock wall. I bend over to poke my head inside and instinc-
tively turn on my headlamp to follow Gary single-file through the steamy,
narrow cavern. “We call this Sauna Cave,” explains Gary. “It’s not really a
cave, but actually an exploratory tunnel made during the construction of the
Hoover Dam.” When workers encountered 122F water, they had to abandon
the site – I, too, am ready to leave the cave behind, as my claustrophobia
reaches a crescendo.
Kayak from Hoover Dam to Willow BeachThe Colorado River below the Hoover Dam is relatively flat water – you
won’t run into the big whitewater rapids that the river is known for as it
snakes through the Grand Canyon. However, on the kayak from Hoover Dam
to Willow Beach the enormous amount of water, which flows through the
narrow Black Canyon creates stronger currents, eddies and boils than I’ve
experienced while kayaking other massive rivers like the Mississippi,
Arkansas or Allegheny.
At Goldstrike Canyon, we stop to explore the amazing slot arroyo. As we
walk up a trail, a stream of water fed by hot springs flows down it. The warm
water between my toes and Teva sandals is surprising and a bit magical.
With hot water drizzling from the canyon walls around us, this place is liter-
ally like no other on earth. A rope ladder assists my climb up a raging water-
fall, something that a week earlier I wouldn’t have imagined doing. However,
the mystical beauty of the canyon scape (and encouragement from Gary)
gives me the energy and courage that I did not realize that I possessed.
After paddling about eight of the twelve miles of this overnight Hoover Dam
kayak tour, we camp on a sandy hill overlooking a wide beach. Gary sets his
tent on a nearby hill after starting the campfire on which we cook our din-
ner. The outfitter supplied food, camp chairs, and all the gear needed for the
expedition. All we brought was our clothing. We enjoy the relaxing pop of
the embers as we finish dinner and then head to bed.
The 60-mph winds weren’t supposed to hit until 8:00 a.m., but we are awak-
ened in the pitch dark by the incessant flapping of the tent’s rainfly. I try to
ignore it and go back to sleep. I dream a crazy nightmare that I can’t talk be-
cause my mouth is full of sand. Soon I’m roused again as the windward side
of the tent pushes against my face, and I find that I am, indeed, grinding
sand between my teeth. I turn on my headlamp to find our sleeping bags
and clothing – inside our tent – covered in a surprisingly deep layer of sand. I
feel like a Bedouin.
“Honey, get up, we need to tie down our campsite,” I say, afraid that the
massive winds would carry away our camping chairs and anything else we’d
left outside.
We unzip the tent and go out to fold up the chairs that had already toppled
in the wind. A plastic bag goes whizzing by, and I dive in the soft sand to
snag it.
By this time, Gary arrives from the nearby hilltop where he’d set his tent.
The guys go to look for a wind shadow in which to reestablish our campsite.
I re-stake the rain fly and crawl back into my sleeping bag. Soon I hear
through the sound of the wind, “Put all your clothes in the dry bag. We’re
going to unstake the tent and carry it to a new spot.”
“Do you want me to fill it with the sleeping bags and mats, too?” I ask.
“No, leave those. We’ll carry them inside the tent,” yells Dan over the fero-
cious wind.
Half asleep, I begin cramming hats, gloves and rain jackets into the dry bag
that Dan had tossed inside the tent. Outside the guys were drawing the
stakes. Soon they carry the shelter, with me following behind trying to carry
the rainfly that is spread with a tent pole. The embedded pole makes the
huge nylon rainfly into a sail, and it catches the wind like a jib. I trip over the
flapping being and drop the dry bag.
Eventually, we set our tents on the leeward side of the sandy hill in a wind-
screen and somehow sleep through the rest of the blustery night.
Kayaking the Hoover Dam
The good news about our kayaking the Hoover Dam adventure is that the
windstorm went through earlier than predicted and in the morning, we’re
not paddling in the anticipated strong headwind. That leaves us plenty of
time to explore the ruins of an old homestead built for early water gauge
workers at mile 53.5, boulder in additional slot canyons and watch for
wildlife.
Desert Adventures picks us up at Willow Beach and drives us back to our ve-
hicle north of Hoover Dam. After our habboob-like escapade, we’re quite
happy that we’ve reserved a room at the Hoover Dam Lodge in Boulder City
for a shower and sleep before we drive back home.
One thing’s for sure when you go with the Wittig’s – the weather will go
wonky.

One of the bird species I wrote about in my very first article published in The
Pinewood News—July 16, 2009 edition —was the Lesser Goldfinch. I think
Munds Park people love Lesser Goldfinches because they readily come to our
feeders, they are easy to see because of the male’s bright yellow coloring, and
they don’t cause us any problems. They don’t wake us up in the morning with
loud cawing as do the American Crows or by knocking on our homes as they try
to drill holes for nut storage the way Acorn Woodpeckers do. The little Lesser
Goldfinches simply quietly chirp away while they gather in groups at your niger
seed feeder or sip out of your birdbath. As I write this article I have six of them
at the seed feeder and five in a hanging
petunia basket.
I was surprised to see them in the hanging
petunia basket. This was the first year I’ve
had the planter and for some reason now
they are checking out the petunias. Petu-
nias do produce seeds, but they are not
easy for me to find, so we’ll see if the
goldfinches are better at that than I am. If
you have cone flowers (Echinacea) in your
garden, however, you can attract not only
Lesser Goldfinches but also a variety of butterflies. Cone flowers are one of
goldfinches’ favorite flowers.
Lesser Goldfinches in Northern Arizona will migrate south for the winter and
you may see them in the Valley if you hang a niger seed feeder or have a garden
to attract them.
And of note: A fellow birder said she spotted at least one Yellow-headed Black-
bird at the far eastern side of Odell Lake when kayaking. They certainly have not
been as prevalent as they were last year, and I do not know why. I wonder if our
very late snow in May affected the nesting of our Steller’s Jays, which build very
early in the spring, and also affected the Yellow-headed Blackbirds. I for one will
be interested to see what 2020 brings for our bird life in Northern Arizona.

The Gal Pals Go Their Own Way
By Annie Weissman
Single Senior
My first summer in Munds Park was in 2008. As a single person, I found it
quite “coupled.” The couples were friendly with me but I was never invited for
dinner or to accompany them for an outing. Eventually I found the “Gal Pals.”
I knew Donna because she lived across the street from me in Scottsdale. We
hung out, but she was only there on weekends. We still have fun on Fridays, but
she’s part of a couple now.
Laura rented a home on Fairlane and I met her while walking my dogs. She
was game to go to movies, music and hang out. I’m still friendly with her, but
she hasn‘t rented in Munds Park for a few years.
Marian lived on Wintergreen. She knew Laura and went out with us. Marian
and I became friends. That worked for a few years, but then she sold her house
and started to travel the world.
Joan, another neighbor from Scottsdale, bought a place in Munds Park seven
years ago. She was always up for an adventure, a meal out, or hanging out. She
just sold her place so she won’t be around here.
Myrna hung out with us, too. She was always up for a good time. But she just
sold her place and moved back to Scottsdale.
I guess it’s time to round up some more Gal Pals.
P.S. I’ll be selling my books, my memoir, fiction book and the ones for teachers
and librarians, in the lobby of the Country Club during Bingo on
Friday, August 31.

Pages in the Pines Cont’d
Touch its bark and spend some time
standing against it. With your first few
breaths, send your attention down into your
feet to mingle with the tree’s roots. Then, on
the next slow breath, send your attention
into the trunk and upwards into the
branches.
Close your eyes and listen. What do you
hear? Breeze rustling through the canopy?
Birds, and if so, what kind? Insects or other
critters? This is your tree’s living environ-
ment. Enjoy the light and shadow, the move-
ments.
Breathe out slowly again, sending your
consciousness upward and downward. Don’t
look for meaning or words, just absorb the
scene around, above and beneath you. Ac-
knowledge the divinity present here, and
send your care and respect to the tree spirit
before you.
Sometimes you come across a tree whose
branches or trunks rub up against themselves
or other trees, and when the wind is strong,
they creak and bang. These are messenger
trees, communicating audibly so that others
can hear. Get to know one of these trees if
you can. They often have a lot to say, and
may be appointed “speakers of the forests.”
Sit at the base of the trunk and let the creak-
ing reverberate through your body. Put your
ear to the trunk and hear the creaking
through the tree.
It’s also interesting to examine your tree
for its face—nearly every tree has one. Usually
somewhere on the bark, there are full or par-
tial facial features. Some say that the location
of the tree’s face gives a sense of the tree’s ac-
cessibility and friendliness. Well off the
ground means the tree prefers not to be ap-
proached. I don’t know if that’s true, I’d try
talking to it anyway.
If you have some idea how long this tree
has been alive, you may try opening your
mind to its lifespan and see if it tells you its
story.
Invite the tree to be your ally and compan-
ion, and ask it to communicate to you any
needs it may have, and any way it would like
to be communicated with. Does your tree
have a secret name it would like to share?
Ask it to guide you in your understanding
of the forest. Pay attention to any images you
receive in your mind’s eye. You may not get
any answers right now, but it’s important to
show your willingness to give it attention,
support and care, just like you would give
and receive with any friend.
Now you have a new friend! If you don’t
know what species the tree is, make a point
to find out when leave. You may want to take
a picture of your tree, or draw it in your
sketch pad, including a detail of a leaf for ref-
erence. Learn as much as you can about the
role this tree plays in your local ecosystem.
How was this tree used by humans in the
past? Does it still have human uses? What are
the features of its wood? How widespread is
this species? Is it under threat of any kind? Is
it native, naturalized, or considered invasive?
Does the tree have any medicinal properties?
Knowing the answers to these questions can
help you understand how past humans have
worked with this tree (or taken from it).
Another important question to ask is:
what is the mythology and magic of this tree?
You may need to look to different cultural
sources and references to get a full picture.
Some trees, like apple, cypress, yew, oak, ash,
hemlock, rowan, and many others, are pres-
ent in both the old and the new world, so
you can study the mythology of both.
There are some trees that guard them-
selves closely, or don’t have faces that are as-
sessable. And there are a few species that
have energy that is not compatible with hu-
mans—yew and elm are two such species, ac-
cording Danu Forest, author of the book
Celtic Tree Magic.
Also keep in mind the time of year you at-
tempt your communications. Many trees are
most active and engaged when their sap is
running in the late winter/early spring, or
when they are in full foliage in the summer
months. As winter approaches, all the trees,
even the pines, slow down a bit. You won’t
be able to commune with deciduous trees in
winter, they will be resting, their energies fo-
cused on the terrestrial currents of the land.
But you should be able to work with the
conifers and the oak all winter.
Develop this relationship consistently
through weeks, months and years, visiting
your tree at different times of day and night,
and different seasons, until you are familiar
with its life rhythms.
KNOW THE LAW: MOVE OVER!All we’re asking is that drivers move over one lane to create a safe margin of
space when passing by any vehicle on the side of the road with lights flashing –that includes regular passenger vehicles, tow trucks, highway maintenance vehi-cles, ambulances and law enforcement vehicles. If moving over isn’t possible orsafe, we ask that you slow down and drive by with caution.
We want you to do this not only because it’s the law, but because it could helpsave a life…
Across the nation, a number people killed each year after being struck by a ve-hicle while on the side of a roadway. These types of crashes kill one tow truckdriver every six days; 23 highway workers and one law enforcement officer everymonth and five firefighters every year.
Tow truck drivers, highway workers, paramedics and law enforcement officersare most at risk, but any driver who pulls over for whatever reason – flat tire, nogas, engine trouble, etc. – faces this danger.
Drivers who are pulled over could be cited for the moving violation thatcomes with a $150+ fine depending on your jurisdiction.

MY HOME MEMORIESBy Jan Toth
I am racking my brain to come up with
something to write about that I haven’t
written before! It gets harder and harder at
times. I am still working on emptying out
my house. I think I see a light at the end of
the tunnel but every time I open another
box, I feel that light fade. I swear I am not
a hoarder, I just like “things” a lot! But in
this case, everything is a memory. On top
of that, my family and friends built this
house. I t has essentially been one owner.
Every kid that has come into this house
heads right up the stairs and looks down
through the railing from my son, Joe, to his
kids and all of my Great nieces and
nephews. It’s a right-of-passage up here.
We came up every weekend in the
summer when we began building the
cabin. Mom and Dad kept their trailer.
When we got the house closed in, the four
bedrooms and loft left lots of room for
workers to camp. I actually slept in the up-
stairs closet. The cot I was on collapsed
one night. I called my brother to come
help, and his friend, Sano Leto, jumped to
the rescue but not before donning his
baseball cap. Several kids were sleeping
on the floor in the loft including my son. He
decided he wanted to sleep in the closet
with me. The rest of the night was sleep-
less because I was afraid the cot might
collapse and I would hurt him. It didn’t and
I didn’t!
When I first came here to Munds Park
full-time in 1983, Bill and Gina has also
moved here with their daughter. We all
shared the cabin until I moved into my own
place in October. In fact, Gina is the one
who found me the job at the fire Depart-
ment. She came to get me at the pool
telling me she’d found me a job. It was
perfect and it was right here. I went with
her to the post office and found the post-
ing, and she was right, I was totally quali-
fied and had all the skills required. In my
bathing suit, I stuck my head in the office
and asked for an application for the job.
Then Fire Chief, Ken Lewis told me to
come in. I told him I wasn’t dressed appro-
priately, but he said that was okay. We
talked for a little while and I went home. I
immediately typed out my résumé, washed
my face and put on make-up and clothes
and went back within an hour. Chief Lewis
commented that was fast and I told him I
wanted to make sure that he knew I was
serious. He set an interview for a Saturday
so I didn’t have to take off work from the
job I had. I interviewed and Tuesday night,
I got a call that I was hired. My start date
was Tuesday, August 29, 1983.
They told me I didn’t need to register
Joe early for school, just bring him on that
Monday. Gina and I had our day planned
after dropping Joe off at school. He had
thrown up in the car on the way in. Gina
and I both wore contact lenses and we
both had the same lens case. When I
went to put my contacts in I thought had a
miracle regeneration in my eyes. The
lenses were to strong! Gina told me the
case was hers and had dumped the liquid
out containing my contacts! The girls in the
optometrist’s office got quite a laugh out of
it. They had heard lots of stories about
how users lost one contact but this was
the first double contact drain dump. I got
my new contacts, we had lunch and
headed home. As we got home, I got a call
from the school, Joey had thrown up in the
lunch room and I had to go get him. We
slept in one of the downstairs bedrooms
and things went pretty well. But when we
got ready to move to our own house, Joe
refused to go, then he said he wanted to
take his rock. I promised him bunk beds,
but no luck until I realized his dad had
been to the Cabin and knew where it was,
but he did not know where our new house
was. I suggested that we take pictures and
send them to Daddy so he would know
what our house looked like. That did the
trick, and we moved into our house on Iron
Springs Rd. without the rock. It still stands
guard in the front yard of this house.
The original house had a deck and
front door under the big picture window on
the second story. The side deck was open
and went all the way to the back of the
house. My sister was rough-housing with
my Dad in the snow on the deck. Since the
deck was only partially done, my sister’s
leg went down through the open deck and
had to have her first knee replacement!
When Dad built the big storage shed he
had to cut the deck off to keep within
county guidelines. The pillars are still
there.
Mom and Dad had talked about making
the living room bigger and after Dad died,
Mom did just that. She added six feet onto
the living room and put the door on the
East side of the house. The front deck
went away too. The blue spruce tree in
the front of the house is the second one
my Mom and Dad planted. It took off and
kept growing. It must be thirty years old or
more by now. It is a beautiful tree as are
all the other trees around my house, but it
is special because I watched it grow, just
like I watched my son and nieces and
nephews grow and enjoy this house.
I found some pictures of the original
construction of the Cabin and I am going
to scan and save them. I have pictures of
my son and his kids on the rock out front.
When I told him twenty years ago that I
was buying this house, he said “good, now
I won’t have to come get my rock!” It is
hard selling this house and going back
over all these memories is taking a toll.
But I have new adventures and new
places to go. Someone will look at this
place and see the potential it has and love
it as much as I do.

***Emergency Change Notification***Pinewood Fire District has the capacity to use the siren to
communicate a true emergency to our community.
The Omni-directional Siren will now be utilized ONLY in the
event of a TRUE EMERGENCY. The Thorgard Lightning
detection system will remain in place at the fire station. The
Thorgard system includes a set of air horns located on the
roof of the fire station and will still sound when there is light-
ning in the area. The Country Club will then set off their
electronic siren (located near the pro shop) to notify golfers
on the course.
Again, the Omni-directional Siren located at the playground
will now be exclusively used to notify community members
of a true emergency. The activation of this siren will coincide
with a message from the Coconino County Emergency
Notification System.
We encourage everyone to sign up for the County alerts at

MUNDS PARK COMMUNITY CHURCH UPDATE by Mike Simswww.mundsparkcc.org
MUNDS PARK IS SHIFTING
INTO FALL MODE
Seems like just yesterday I was driving
down Pinewood Boulevard in early May
remarking to Trish that I wanted to enjoy
the summer because Labor Day would be
here before I knew it!! Wow, it has come
and gone. By the way, I had a great sum-
mer meeting new friends and embracing
my current acquaintances.
Now many of our friends are making
plans to depart Munds Park prior to the
cold weather settling upon our beautiful
community. I have encouraged many of
you to tough it out at least through our
spectacular October. Thanks for being
around this summer and making our com-
munity a vibrant environment. May each
of you have a safe and healthy fall and
winter season.
My grandfather once told me that as I got
older time would pass much more quickly.
As a young boy, I never thought about
time. Now I have trouble remembering
what day of the week it is because all my
days seem packed and fast.
Days have become more valuable to me.
All the money in the world cannot buy us
more time, so we should make the most of
the time we have left. Love your neighbor
as you love yourself. A guy I know shared
that little tidbit with me. His name is
Jesus.
Embrace your family and friends each
day, don't let your daily worries get you
down to the point you can't count your
blessings. We spend way too much time
worrying about tomorrow. In the scheme
of life, our time on earth is short compared
to the joyful eternity we will spend with
Christ provided we have accepted Him as
our Lord and Savior.
In James we read: “Why, you do not even
know what will happen tomorrow. What is
your life? You are a mist that appears for a
little while and then vanishes.”
(James 4:14, NIV)
God bless each one of you who are leav-
ing and those of us who are staying and
fortunate enough to live in Munds Park
year-round.

On the first Sunday of each month the

have accepted Jesus Christ as their per-

Communion, which means you do not
have to be a member of the church to par-
ticipate.
The second Sunday of each month is
potluck Sunday. Everyone is invited
whether you bring food or not. This is a
wonderful time to meet people in a casual
environment, make new friends and enjoy
tasty food. The potluck follows the 10:30
am Sunday service.
WHO ARE WE?
We are an independent, non-denomina-
tional church, which means that regardless
of your denominational background you
are welcome to attend and worship with us
on Sunday mornings at 10:30 am. Adult
Bible Fellowship (Sunday School) begins
at 8:45 am on Sunday mornings.
YOU ARE CORDIALLY
