Why is this emblem on the flag?

Long ago the Aztecs’ god told his people to search for a caracara hawk sitting on a cactus devouring a snake. They found it at Lake Texcoco.

There they built a great city called…

…Tenochtitlan. Later the Spanish

conquistadors called it Mexico City.
