Raising the Roof!Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen to St Albans Musical Theatre Company’s production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.
We are so pleased to be staging this musical, especially with the conflict in the whole world at present time as it shows that it’s not just in modern times that minorities are the centre of hatred and persecution. These things have been going on since time immemorial.
We touched on the subject in a lighter hearted way in our last show ‘Hairspray’ but the message is stronger in this show. That being said there are a lot of very humorous one liners in the show and I hope we have captured that unique Jewish humour!!!
We are pleased to welcome back into the fold Steve Wilks playing Tevye. The last time Steve performed with us was in our production of Chess, many years ago. There are other familiar faces and many new ones on the stage for this production, each one giving outstanding performances.
We have enjoyed the rehearsal period very much and I hope you will now sit back and enjoy visiting Anatevka, dear little village, little town of mine!!!
Jane L Foufas
Chairman
Philip Joslin – Music DirectorFollowing training at Trinity College of Music and Bristol University, Philip has conducted a wide variety of musical styles covering everything between classical works and modern musicals. Recent MD credits include The Mikado, Yeomen of the Guard, HONK!, Iolanthe, (ALGSS); Annie, Guys & Dolls, The Sound of Music, (SMTC);
Oh What a Lovely War, Guys & Dolls, (RLOS); Sweeney Todd (PIT Productions). He is also a guest conductor with the Grims Dyke Opera Company. Directorial credits include Sullivan and Gilbert and The Zoo. Philip is sometimes to be seen treading the boards, and, in a rare example of this, he played the part of Horton the elephant in ALGSS’ production of Seussical last June. Philip is next to be seen as MD of Carousel for ALGSS next February.
Linda Dyne – DirectorLinda started her Professional theatrical career when she was 18 and continued for 20 years until she decided to try her hand at Directing, rather than Acting. She has now been Directing and Choreographing for longer than she will admit to! This is Linda’s fourth ‘Fiddler’ and she has enjoyed Directing this show just as much as the first. ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ is a true story which
always makes it an very emotive piece.
Linda’s next Production in 2 weeks time is ‘Steel Magnolias’ at The Barn Theatre, Welwyn Garden City. That will be followed by the new Musical, ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ at Harpenden and then a favourite G & S, ‘Gondoliers’ at Watford Palace in 2017 for ALGSS. She has thoroughly enjoyed working with Philip again and always feels blessed when she has such a wonderful cast and crew to work with!
For everyone’s enjoymentWe want you to enjoy the performance to the full so, as a courtesy to both audience and cast, please switch off all mobile phones and electronic devices. Video or audio recording of this performance is strictly prohibited. Please note: This Performance includes the use of smoke and a gunshot – Thank you for your co-operation. Including mobile phones
Steve Wilks – TevyeSteve is delighted to be playing the part of Tevye again for SAMTC, 15 years after the last time he performed with the company in “Chess”. Tevye is one of his favourite parts, combining great comedy, fantastic songs, strong characters and pathos interwoven into a believable storyline. Steve has been performing for 23 years now in the Hertfordshire area and has played such parts as Higgins in “My Fair Lady”, the
King in “The King and I”, Billy in “Carousel”, Emile in “South Pacific”, Freddie in “Chess”, Pilate in “JC Superstar”, Cervantes/Don Quixote in “Man of La Mancha”, Daddy Warbucks in “Annie”, Adam in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”, and Captain Smith in “Titanic”. Steve would like to thank his long-suffering family for supporting him and his show demands!
Cate Brooks – TzeitelSince primary school, when Cate discovered her passion for musical theatre, she has been an active member of a number of local societies and taken part in many shows in the St Albans area. She will take her A levels this Summer and then hopes to further her performance skills at drama school or university. She’s glad to be revisiting Fiddler on the Roof, having had a role in her school production four years ago, where she
played her first named role, as Sasha the Russian!Subsequent credits include Polly in ‘Crazy for You’, Reecey in ‘Our House’, Belle in ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and Cha Cha in ‘Grease’ as well as being a part of SAMTC’s previous show ‘Hairspray’, her first show with the group.
Debby Connor – GoldeThis is Debby’s fifth show with St Albans Musical Theatre Company (SAMTC) and she is now a part of the furniture. Strong- charactered women seem to be her forte, so playing Tevye’s long suffering wife Golde in Fiddler on The Roof seemed to be her natural progression. Her previous incarnations have been Widow Corney, Oliver (SAMTC), Carlotta Campion, Follies (SAMTC), Miss Lynch, Grease (SAMTC). Katisha, Hot Mikado Finchley and Friern Barnet Operatic Society (FFBOS), Domina, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (FFBOS) , Miss Hannigan, Annie (FFBOS), Sarah, Company, Completely Productions, and Mama Noah Children of Eden with (FFBOS).
Emily Down – HodelEmily has loved the stage from a young age, starting dance classes at the tender age of 2. As the years flew by the love grew to include singing and acting as well. Emily has competed nationally in all three areas and has performed in numerous musicals as part of both local societies and at the University of York. Some of her favourite to date include, Mary Magdalene, Jesus Christ Superstar), Crystal, Little Shop of Horrors, Isle, Spring Awakening, Lucinda, Into
the Woods, Somewhere Ballet Soloist, West Side Story and Ti Moune, Once on This Island. Emily is thrilled to be playing the role of Hodel in her SAMTC debut.
Emily Dell – ChavaEmily has studied a variety of dance from the age of three including Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern and Contemporary. Currently studying for her A levels, she is delighted to be performing her third show with the society as Chava following 2012’s “Sound of Music” in which she played Briggita and 2010’s “The King and I” when she made her first appearance with the society as one of the Siamese children. As well as performing Emily enjoys both digital and traditional photography and loves to travel abroad.
Lee Harris – Motel Lee has performed from a young age and also puts his hand to directing plays and musicals in the area. This will be his second show with the company, he opened act 2 of ‘Kiss Me Kate’ in 2012 singing “It’s too darn hot”. Fiddler will be the 17th show that he has been involved in, either on or backstage, since he moved to the area from his home in
Dorset in 2012. He played Tevye in his school production in 2006 so is delighted to be involved with the show again, ten years on.
Alex Slater – PerchikPerchik is Alex’s second role and first principal role after joining the company for Grease in 2014. Previously roles on stage include the ensemble for Grease and as the endearing yet clumsy Moose in Crazy for You with St Albans Youth Musical Theatre. During his time at Simon Balle School Alex did appear as part of the chorus for the schools production of Les Miserables when he was in Year 10, but was better known for playing Baritone Saxophone within the schools ensembles. Alex is currently in
Phase 2 of his Army training at the Royal Military School of Music and is looking to pursue a career as a military musician when he passes out of training at Kneller Hall.
Zodiac – FyedkaZodiac has had a love for the performing arts from a young age and made his SAOS/SAMTC debut in Grease as a “Greaser”. Since then he has performed in both Oliver as “Noah Claypole” and Hairspray as a “Council Member”. Zodiac has a long history of performing in Musical Theatre with St Albans Youth Musical Theatre and has also made it into films such as Gulliver’s Travels (2010) starring Jack Black and The Boys Are Back (2009) Starring Clive Owen. Now, having joined Top Talent Acting Agency and Spotlight, Zodiac hopes to break into the Film and Television industry.
Jane Foufas – YenteJane is delighted to be back onstage with SAMTC playing the part of Yente. She says that Yente is one of her favourite characters and has some very subtle comic lines. Jane first played the part over 20 years ago but now feels she’s more Yente’s age!!Other roles she has played include Solange in Follies, which included some ‘chair dancing’, Katisha in The Mikado, Hattie
in Kiss me Kate and Buttercup in HMS Pinafore.A few years ago, she was lucky to audition for and be cast in the hit musical film version of ‘Mamma Mia’, starring alongside Meryl Streep, Julie Walters and Pierce Brosnan.Since then Jane has appeared in various TV commercials and has been cast in 3 more films
Clive Webb – Lazar WolfI am really looking forward to playing Lazar Wolf again in this wonderful show. Many, many, many years ago I even played Perchik, so I must have some attachment to the story and the music. After years of performing a wide variety of principal roles and chorus or being front of house for our company and performing with other local
societies I can really say this has been an enjoyable show to rehearse with a lovely new set of faces and talent and some old familiar friends. I hope you enjoy it. And by the way, I am still looking for a replacement for my dearly departed wife Frumah Sarah.
