THE NATIONAL ANTHEM arr. Barry TalleyConducted by Sheri Neill, TMEA Vice-President and College Division Chair

Magnificat Z. Randall Stroope (b. 1953)Canticle of Mary (Luke 1:46–55)Traditionally, the Magnificat is used to summon worshippers to late afternoon or early evening church services. This setting, commissioned by the Haltom HS Varsity Women’s Choir for their performance at the 2001 American Choral DirectorsAssociation Convention, features piano four-hands and text in both traditional Latin as well as English.

Hvalite Imya Gospodne Pavel Chesnokov (1877–1944)(Praise the Name of the Lord) Op. 9, No. 23

Blagosloví, dushé moyá, Ghóspoda Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859–1935), arr. Sichivitsa(Bless the Lord, O My Soul) from Liturgy, Op. 37These two Russian composers have many connections, including substantial careers as teachers, conductors, andcomposers. Each of them made significant contributions to the body of works available for treble voices. Praise the Name ofthe Lord, otherwise known as the polyeleos (from the Greek words meaning “many mercies”) is a hymn sung atresurrectional and festal matins. During the singing, the clergy process to the middle of the church and all the lights in thetemple are lit in anticipation of the reading of the Gospel.Praise the name of the Lord; praise the Lord, O you His servants. Alleluia.Blessed be the Lord from Zion, He who dwells In Jerusalem. Alleluia.O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever. Alleluia.O give thanks unto the God of Heaven, for His mercy endures forever. Alleluia.

Chesnokov was a student of Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov during his tenure as a professor and then director of the MoscowConservatory. This arrangement is based on one published by Chesnokov.Bless the Lord, O my soul. Blessed art Thou, O Lord.Bless the Lord, O my soul,And all that is within me, bless His holy name.Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,Who redeems your life from destruction,Who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies.Bless the Lord, O my soul,And all that is within me, bless His holy name.Blessed art Thou, O Lord.— from the Divine Liturgy (Ps. 103: 1–6)

Nada te turbe Joan Szymko (b. 1957)Saint Teresa of Ávila

Adolph Salinas, celloSpanish nun Saint Teresa (1515–1582), one of the great mystics of the Roman Catholic Church, was the author of spiritualclassics and the originator of the Carmelite Reform. Composer Joan Szymko is the founder and director of Viriditas, awomen’s choral ensemble. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Szymko is fond of writing for the stage as well as for choral groups.Let nothing disturb you, nothing frighten you,All things are passing. God never changes.Patience obtains all things.Whoever has God lacks nothing.God is enough.

Libertango Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992), arr. Oscar EscaladaLamar Burkhalter, percussion

A legendary proponent of the tango, Piazzolla is credited with elevating the tango to an art form despite opposition fromtraditionalists in his native Argentina, and also with incorporating elements of both classical music and jazz into his tangos. In this work, Piazzolla utilizes two words for which he had great affection: liberty and tango. Arranger Oscar Escalada(b. 1956), a noted Argentinian composer and conductor, is the founder of the Coral del Nuevo Mundo (The New World’s Chorale).

Program NotesStill I Rise! Rosephanye Powell (b. 1962)

Lamar Burkhalter, percussionThe infectious joy of the gospel style accompaniment is a reminder of the composer’s African-American roots. Powell, who earned a doctorate in vocal performance, is an assistant professor of music at Auburn University with a thriving careeras a composer, arranger, and soprano soloist. Powell’s text, inspired by Psalm 42, provides an encouraging, determined tone.In accordance with the gospel style, both the soloist and accompanist are invited to improvise. This piece was commissionedby Vox Femina Los Angeles in 2004.

I Will Greatly Rejoice Knut Nystedt (b. 1915)Isaiah 61: 10–11Honored by the king of Norway as a Knight of the Order of St. Olav for his contributions to Norwegian music, thischurch organist, university professor, and conductor of the internationally renowned Norwegian Soloists’ Choir from 1950to 1990 has earned prestigious awards and well-deserved worldwide recognition. Nystedt’s early exposure to church hymnsgreatly influenced the predominantly sacred nature of his works for vocalists and choral groups, which are characterized byhis use of a wide spectrum of tonal color and dramatic dynamic contrast.

Dies Irae Z. Randall Stroope (b. 1953)(Day of Wrath)“Dies Irae” is a Latin poem attributed to a thirteenth-century Franciscan monk on the subject of the Last Judgment. The driving, hammered piano introduction gives way to the chorus, which enters with towering sonorities of the “DiesIrae” text. The chorus often jumps octave intervals and has dramatic dynamic contrasts to portray the cataclysmic fury ofthe Last Judgment. In the middle of the piece, there is a brief but expressive prayer for mercy and deliverance. The pianounleashes the storm of events again, and the agitation and strength of the chorus close in a final cry of warning and fear.Day of wrath, day that will dissolve the world into burning coals as Davidprophesied with the Sibyl. How great trembling there will be when the Judgecomes to strictly sentence all! Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest.

Nïñe sílï ñebésnïya Alexander Sheremetev (1859–1931), ed. Vladimir Morosan(Now the Powers of Heaven)Count Alexander Dmitrievich Sheremetev, though not a musician in vocation, was a patron of the arts and frequentlyorganized orchestral and choral concert extravaganzas in St. Petersburg, Russia. He authored many musical works, one ofhis finest being a freely composed setting of the Cherubic Hymn being performed today. Now the Powers of Heaven do service invisibly with us; lo, the King ofGlory enters. Lo, the mystical sacrifice is fulfilled. Let us draw near in faithand love and become communicants of life eternal. Alleluia!Danny Boy Frederick Edward Weatherly (1848–1929), arr. Z. Randall Stroope

Katie Gunn, OboeZ. Randall Stroope speaks of his setting of these familiar lyrics:The text has always been very poignant to me . . . I am most drawn to the interpretations that describe a fathersaying farewell to his son who is being called into military service. The farewell is said with honor and with a dignityand profundity that is rare in our present world. The “summer” (long happy days) of their relationship is about toend. The son is leaving to an unknown future and the father, himself, is making his own final covenant with hisboy, that the son will someday return to his father’s place of rest and breathe a blessing—an “Ave” over him, lookingforward to a permanent reunion someday. It is with that sense of passion, longing, sadness, and quiet consolationthat I penned these notes. May the simple nobility of the text etch deep in the hearts and minds of all who hear it.

Rainbow ’Round My Shoulder Adapted & arr. by Robert DeCormier (b. 1922)Chain Gang SongSinging of better times, a better world, and a better fate, the workers demonstrate faith in a power that lives beyondthe reality of their daily lives, believing salvation will surely be found in the next life if not in the present one. RobertDeCormier’s ballet by the same name remains in the active repertoire of the famed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater,a company founded 49 years ago to showcase African American dancers and choreographers.
