Why Men Should Teach In Early Childhood Education

Men Are Positive Role Models for Children

• Men show boys what they can become

• Girls need to see a nurturing male in order to see what kind of men they’d like to have in their lives

Why Is There a Shortage of Men?

• Low status and pay

• Perception of teaching is “women’s work”

• The fear of accusation of child abuse

• Stereotyping

Ways to Get More Men Involved• Encourage male

volunteers and work study students to consider teaching as a career

• Ask men staff to recruit other men

• Attend high schools and colleges job fairs

• Involve parents in the recruitment process

• Advertise the need for male teachers

For the sake of the children, be open-minded,

men also play an important role in the lives of children
