Saying goodbye
Super Scruton fair
Lots of people from all over the village
went to the Scruton fair on the 21st of
April. There were loads of fun activities
like: penalty shoot-out, tombola, raffle
and a game were you have to shoot
down a board with a Nerf gun. Erin (class
4) said, “It was really fun because there
were lots of things to do. My favourite
was the tombola because you could win
things.” Over all it was a really fun day
out for all the family.
Tennis club Year groups two to six were very excited
when it came to Monday nights because
tennis club was on, hosted by Mr Scaife
each week. After every session the
attendees felt more and more confident
about playing tennis. James G said, “We
learnt a lot about playing tennis!”
Mr Scaife was amazing!
Amazing French Pupils have learned so much from this
club, amazing French club! French can be
very interesting. French can help you
learn about new cultures and words. At
the start of each session, the children
were given juice and biscuits and then
they started learning by playing lots of
different games. Sarah said, “I love it
when we play lotto (bingo)!”

What an interesting, fantastic club Su Dixon had
organised for classes 2&3 and 4! On the 3rd of
May 2018 Su Dixon came and ran an awesome
gymnastics club. The children learnt things such
as balances, roles and floor routines. Here’s
what some people who participated in the club
thought:
Mhairi class 3 said,” I loved doing the cartwheels
and handstands.”
Lottie class 3 said,” I liked the warm ups” and
also said she would definitely go again.
Everyone had a great time, THANK YOU SU!
Y3/4 Tennis
competition On the 30th May South Otterington,
Appleton Wiske, Brompton, Great Smeaton
and Ainderby Steeple schools all took
4
part in the tennis competition for years
3 & 4.
Phillip said, “I was very proud of myself
and my team.
The team voted Freya as player of the
match because she tried the hardest.
However, all the team played extremely
well and enjoyed the morning out.
WELL DONE!
Class 3 took a trip with their
imaginations and a Viking came to
help them learn about the culture
of Vikings on the 21st of May. “I
enjoyed it when they showed us
the armour and we tested the
shield,” exclaimed Danny .Class 3
must have learned a lot that day.
They looked at some artefacts and
armour. They even tested a Viking
shield and had grape juice.
“The grape juice was not the best
but it was alright,” quoted Daley.
The class also learned of the super
strong man BEOWULF who
defeated a vicious monster “I
would do it again because I had
fun and wore armour.”
quoted Ayken with a smile on his
face. The majority would
definitely do it again.
Trooping Tennis!
A very excited group of year 6 went to a
trooping tennis competition, on the 22nd
of May. The competition took place at
Hambleton Leisure Centre.
As they got there they realised just how
hard it would be! When the children
arrived, all the other school were already
warming up. A lot of the other children
there played tennis at a club so Ainderby
really had to try hard.

Question& Answer with Willow:
Q: What was your favourite part?
A: When my team-mates scored and
when we were all supporting each other!
Q: Did you learn anything new?
A: I learnt how to aim better which I
wasn’t the best at.
Q: Was it challenging?
A: Yes it was very challenging, especially
when we were against expert tennis
players. Out of a scale of 1 to 10, I would
say it was probably a 7.5 out of 10.
The children did very well in the
competition. They were all very
competitive, supportive, proud and they
had an excellent attitude towards their
day.
Magic MUSIC
LESSONS
According to the students music is
a subject that they intend to spend
a portion of their life on.
Throughout the term, every week
there have been musicians coming
in to teach different groups how to
play a variety of instruments:
keyboard, piano, strings and brass.
Learn more of this interesting topic
further into the article…
Here are a few quotes from the
people who do these music lessons:
James T stated, “The lessons help
me focus on my playing and they
give me a good amount of pleasure
because it is so satisfying to
perform.”
Katie exclaimed, “I think music
lessons are lovely as they give you
a new skill in life!”

2018 Y2 SATS
Y6 weren’t the only ones facing
a challenge... Y2 also did SATS
this term. SATS are tests all Y2s
in the UK do and it’s for the
Government to see how well
the School teaches.
Though hard work, it was okay
for most people. The children
did the tests calmly and all
persevered. They got through
them and did very well.
SUPER science S.A T.S
At school five year 6 children were
getting very nervous as they were
about to do three very important
science tests on the 4th of June.
Mrs Sharp (head teacher)
commented on the children’s
behaviour and said,” They coped
amazingly, they were calm and
determined; the external examiner
was also very impressed.” There
were three short tests all containing
different topics. And the five
children (who were picked at
random) all had to complete them.
Straight after registration the five
pupils went into the hall, sat down
and the external examiner
explained what was going to
happen - nobody wanted to do it
but it had to be done.
Ainderby steeple was one of very
few schools in England to be picked
to do the test as this small minority
will tell the government how much
pupils know about science; but
unlike termly tests the school will
not get the results back. After a
hectic morning of testing, Mrs Sharp
7
rewarded them with a set of gel
pens each the next day.
QUAD KIDZ A variety of KS1 and KS2 pupils
went to the Quad Kids competition
on the 7th of June and tried really
hard. The competition consisted of
4 different events: 100 metre
sprint, standing long jump, howler
throw and a long distance run.
Angus said, “My favourite event
was long distance running
because I LOVE running!” Years 1
and 2 came 2nd overall, years 3 and
4 came 1st and years 5 and 6 came
3rd. The children did extremely
well (especially Oscar Thomas T
and Roxy) and everyone enjoyed
the event.
Rocking Rugby
Pupils from Classes 3 and 4 took
part in a rugby competition at
Mowden Park Rugby Stadium in
Darlington. Accompanied by Mr H,
the pupils were Lucas, Angus, Joe
W, William, Alfie, Sarah, Isabella
W, Ruby R, James H and Daley. The
two top scorers were Sarah and
Lucas with four tries each, but
everyone had a great team spirit
and tried their best. The prize for
the top scorers was a small
chocolate sweet – yum! Over all the
Ainderby team came 2ND in our
group. It was amazing and fun for
us all, we returned to school feeling
exceptionally proud of ourselves.
FAB PHOTOS
As well as the rugby
competition taking place on this
date, all of the school had their
picture taken. They had the
8
class photos and Y6’s and
Reception had their Buddy
photos as well. The flash was
very bright and hurt some
people’s eyes. Many people
enjoyed it. Lucas said, “The
buddy photo was the best!”
Parents and staff of Ainderby
Steeple School gathered together at
Solberge Hall on the 8th June for the
2018, Oscars-themed FASS Summer
Ball. Mrs Sharp quoted, “I had an
amazing time! I won a Masham
brewery tour voucher and I bid and
won a cake from Tea Cosy Cakes;
my favourite part was the music.”
Everyone enjoyed the night a lot.
Mrs Best said, “My favourite part
was the photo booth. I also enjoyed
the YES/NO game. I really enjoyed it
and I would give it an 8 out of 10.”
Every adult who went came back
tired but satisfied. It was full of
games dancing and drink .
Altogether £2025 was raised plus
match funding (which was £1000) to
support the school in providing for
the children.
Why am I writing about Adam
Scaif’s after school sport club? Well,
I’m going to tell you! It all started on
the 11th of June, Adam Scaife led an
after-school multi-sports club and
eight people joined in. Their names
were: James G, Spencer, Miles,
Daniel, James T, Sarah, Aeryn and
Freya.
Spencer said, “I liked the sports and
the activities, my favourite sports
were running and the throwing.”
This should definitely happen again
next year!

Sporty sports day! This year, Ainderby Steeple participated
in their sports day on the 14th of June
2018. This year’s event was one of the
windiest ever! Many of the parents came
to proudly cheer on their children.
Jenson (Y3) quoted, “Even though I didn’t
come first in any of my races, I am now
very inspired to try my hardest and come
first next year!”
Isabella (Y5) noted, “I won most of my
races so I feel very proud and I want to
do it again.”
There were many different types of races
like:
Sack Race
Skipping Race
Egg n’ spoon Race
Parent Race
Scarlett (Reception) said, “I came second
in a few of my races and I had a really fun
time. Even my mummy came to watch!”
SUMDOG STARS!
Once again pupils at our school took
part enthusiastically in the North
Yorkshire Sumdog contest between
15th and 21st June. Many pupils
took the opportunity to complete
questions and games with their
friends during lunchtimes and
Golden Time – some were even set
Sumdog as their homework for the
week! The children enjoyed playing
competitively and certificates were
awarded to those who did
particularly well in the overall
leaderboards: Henry T, 50th and Erin
C 70th.
Well done to all who took part!

Amazing drone picture!
The whole school was in a photo but not a
normal type of picture, a picture taken by a
flying drone! The drone was controlled by
Mrs Simon’s husband, Mr Simons. As the
drone got to the sky ready to take the
photos, the whole school made their way to
stand outside the new classroom (well the
latest classroom) in year order - reception
at the front and year 6 at the back. We
posed for many photos such as silly faces
and cheesy smiles.
This took place on the 22nd of June 2018
many people enjoyed this because they
missed a bit of lesson time, they also
enjoyed watching the drone as it hovered
above us. Clever Mr Simons!
Monstrous Mile “I feel proud because I managed to beat
other racers, said 1st
place winner in Y6
for the 12 and a half lap run (which was
pretty much a mile). This race took place
on the 20th
of June and race involved
everyone except class 1 (it would be too
long for the smaller children). The best
part was cheering the runners on. Even if
most people were shaking at the start,
they were all determined to complete the
race and win points for their tree teams.

THINK BEFORE YOU
CROSS! On the 28 of June, two police officers and
a JRSO officer came to lead our collective
worship and talk about train safety and
how to cross a road. Kevin, the JRSO
officer, started by talking about how to
cross a road safely. He talked about
different sorts of crossings (a pelican and
a zebra crossing) and explained the
rules for safe crossing: stop, look, listen,
think. Then came the Community Police
Officers explaining about rail safety and
saying how much you could be fined for
going on the tracks. We watched a short
animation about why not to go on the
tracks which included a rapping bird and
a fox! Then the two officers told us about
a summer challenge to do with your
friends, it is called Lifestyle Challenge and
involves raising funds for charities and
community projects.
Kian (Y6) noted," I enjoyed the Police
Officers coming and telling us about how
to be safe on train tracks.”
Lovely Lunch
On the 29th of June class 1 and 2 went to
Flamingo Land. At lunch time, because
there were so few children left in school,
the dinner staff set up the hall with two
long tables in the hall so Class 3 and 4
could have lunch all together. The
children were allowed to sit wherever
they wanted to.
Ruby (class 4) said, “It was really fun! I
loved sitting with all my friends and
chatting.”
Class 4 didn’t have to do dinner duty
because there were not as many people
to serve. After the lunch we went outside
and we had music on, we had an extra-
12
long break time. James G (class 4) said,
“It was a good change, I wish we could
have kept it like that every lunch time.”
Loving
Leavers
Service
On the 3rd of July was the leaver’s
service for the Y6 of 2018. Our Leavers
Service was based around the themes
of yesterday, today and forever and
took place at Ripon Cathedral. At the
service we sang four different songs.
Each school also made candles to
bring into the service and put onto the
table at the front of the altar. We
asked one of the makers of the candle
from out school what it represented,
Ruby said, “It represents that Jesus is
the light of the world and that Jesus
will show us the way through the day.”
At the end of the service we all got to
hold a candle and pass on the light and
make the room glow. It was beautiful.
Class 4 induction

Incredible Ignite Kids
Roadshow
Jen and the Ignite Roadshow came to our
school from New Life Baptist church, on
Friday the 13th of July 2018. The crew
that came were Jen, Trevor, Bob {Robyn},
13
Angie, Ione and Diane. We had lots of fun
and played lots of games. We watched a
Veggietales video based on the story of
The Ten Commandments from the Bible.
It was a cartoon and the characters were
vegetables! The games that we played
cup stacking, over and over and stop were
the clock. We also learned a memory
verse: I can do everything through Christ
who gives me strength.
Class 4 summer fair!
The school was filling with
excitement as the year 6
children started setting up for
the class 4 Summer Fair 2018.
Many varieties of stalls were at
the fair like candyfloss and
bookmarks.
Annabel said, “I really enjoyed
selling our products. I worked
with Molly and we sold
Lemonade, chocolate apples,
chocolate dipped strawberries
and marshmallows, stress balls
and bookmarks.”
Willow quoted, “My favourite
part was running the drawing
competition. I worked with
Sarah and Katie and they were a
great help!”
Erin said, “It was really fun! I
worked with Wiktoria and we
sold milkshakes and had a
mystery box challenge.”
Lots of parents and friends
came to buy our products, play
games and support the school
raising funds for our chosen
charity Big Red.
Leavers and Awards
Service
The whole of the school gathered
together on Friday the 20th July for
the leavers and awards service.
Erin (class 4) said, “The service was
very emotional and I got a bit upset.
I will miss my little one and all my
friends that are not going to my
high school.”
Scarlett (class 1) said, “I got very
upset after the service because my
buddy Molly is leaving. I am really
excited to be in year 1 though!”

SAYING GOODBYE TO MR H & MRS
GREEN
This year we have to say goodbye to
two of our staff members, Mr
Hodgson (teacher in class 3) and
Mrs Green (Kids Club staff).
Here are a couple of things Angus
will miss about them: “Mrs Green’s
purple hair and Mr Hodgson’s
jokes!”
We were lucky enough to have Mr H
for 16 years, he has been a vital
member of the school team and
without him P.E would not be the
same. When Mrs Green came, it
really helped as it enabled Kids Club
to allow more children to join our
before and after school club. We
will all miss them very much.
Thank you to all of our parents and
grandparents who have helped in
school in any way during the term.
Thank you also to FASS for all their
work organising events for our
school.
Happy 50th Birthday
Thank you to everyone who came to
celebrate our school birthday. It is 50
years since the school was built to
replace the original school which was
in Ainderby Steeple.
We have welcomed back past pupils,
parents and staff, opened the time
capsule buried 25 years ago and added
things to it, for it to be opened in 2043-
25 years time.
Thank you to FASS providing
refreshments, Joyce Anderson (James
G’s grandma) for making the fruit cake,
Amy Walker for making cupcakes and
decorating the cake, Carol Best and
Sarah Simons for putting together our
beautiful hand print cross and for all
the donations of lovely flowers around
school which look beautiful. Finally
thank you to everyone who has helped
organise and plan the event and
everyone attending.
We are very proud of our school!
15
Thank you to Class
4 for all their hard
work putting
together this
newsletter.
WE WOULD LIKE TO
WISH EVERYONE a
very happy summer
holiday. School
