WHEN you ask Adam Giles whathis number-one goal is, he isemphatic.

‘‘I believe that one day Aust-ralia can win a World Cup . . . andI’ll fight and work as hard as I canto make that a reality,’’ he said.

The Eastern Suburbs FootballAssociation competition’s man-ager will be heading to Europe foran intense management trainingcourse, which he hopes will givehim the skills as a sports managerto help achieve Australian soc-cer’s ultimate goal.

The International Master ofManagement, Law and Humani-ties of Sport, also known as theFIFA Master, will take Giles toItaly, Switzerland and the UK ashe learns the finer points of sports

management.The full-time course, beginning

in September, will take ninemonths to complete and will givehim the qualifications to be asenior manager in internationalsporting organisations.

Despite the name of the course,the qualification is not limited tosoccer.

The course will add to hisdegree in Sports Management and

Tourism at the University ofCanberra.

Giles, 24, was one of 30 peoplechosen worldwide from 500 appli-cants for the course.

He hoped the knowledge he’dglean, combined with hard work,would take him to the top ofinternational sport.

‘‘In the long term, if I’m think-ing and dreaming big, I’d love torun FIFA one day, sit on the IOC,’’he said.

His big objective, though, wasan Australian soccer World Cup.

‘‘To host one would be fantas-tic,’’ he said.

‘‘To win one before I pass onfrom this life would be the ulti-mate.’’

THE Galloping Greens were hammeredby refereeing decisions at the ruck andmaul in the first grade fixture.

The grand finalists of the last threeyears played a match of typical inten-sity and feeling with Sydney Universitytriumphing 29-12 over Randwick atUniversity Oval No.1 mud bath on theback of penalty goals.

The Randwick faithful are stillpuzzled trying to work out the penaltycount.

It was two tries apiece, however, theboot of Dan Kelly and inconsistentrefereeing decisions saw the Studentshome in a match which saw four yellowand one red card.

The game was of finals intensity –three players found themselves in thesin bin in a tightly contested first half.Each side scored a try but a penalty tryhelped to keep Randwick in touchdespite trailing in possession.

Dan Kelly kicked his second penaltyof the half after the bell to send theStudents to the sheds with a one-pointlead, then two more after the breakopened the margin to a converted try.

Uni flanker David Hickey was sentfrom the field for his second yellow cardfor foul play in the dying stages.

But the match was all but over and thevisitors were unable to capitalise on theone-man advantage. It was a hard dayfor Randwick winning only one marchagainst the students.
