Picture: JOHN APPLEYARD ~PP448519 Giles wants to be master in sport ANDREW PRIESTLEY ‘I believe that one day Australia can win a World Cup . . . and I’ll fight and work as hard as I can to make that a reality – ADAM GILES WHEN you ask Adam Giles what his number-one goal is, he is emphatic. ‘‘I believe that one day Aust- ralia can win a World Cup . . . and I’ll fight and work as hard as I can to make that a reality,’’ he said. The Eastern Suburbs Football Association competition’s man- ager will be heading to Europe for an intense management training course, which he hopes will give him the skills as a sports manager to help achieve Australian soc- cer’s ultimate goal. The International Master of Management, Law and Humani- ties of Sport, also known as the FIFA Master, will take Giles to Italy, Switzerland and the UK as he learns the finer points of sports management. The full-time course, beginning in September, will take nine months to complete and will give him the qualifications to be a senior manager in international sporting organisations. Despite the name of the course, the qualification is not limited to soccer. The course will add to his degree in Sports Management and Tourism at the University of Canberra. Giles, 24, was one of 30 people chosen worldwide from 500 appli- cants for the course. He hoped the knowledge he’d glean, combined with hard work, would take him to the top of international sport. ‘‘In the long term, if I’m think- ing and dreaming big, I’d love to run FIFA one day, sit on the IOC,’’ he said. His big objective, though, was an Australian soccer World Cup. ‘‘To host one would be fantas- tic,’’ he said. ‘‘To win one before I pass on from this life would be the ulti- mate.’’ Galloping Greens left hamstrung by ref calls TONY LEWIS THE Galloping Greens were hammered by refereeing decisions at the ruck and maul in the first grade fixture. The grand finalists of the last three years played a match of typical inten- sity and feeling with Sydney University triumphing 29-12 over Randwick at University Oval No.1 mud bath on the back of penalty goals. The Randwick faithful are still puzzled trying to work out the penalty count. It was two tries apiece, however, the boot of Dan Kelly and inconsistent refereeing decisions saw the Students home in a match which saw four yellow and one red card. The game was of finals intensity – three players found themselves in the sin bin in a tightly contested first half. Each side scored a try but a penalty try helped to keep Randwick in touch despite trailing in possession. Dan Kelly kicked his second penalty of the half after the bell to send the Students to the sheds with a one-point lead, then two more after the break opened the margin to a converted try. Uni flanker David Hickey was sent from the field for his second yellow card for foul play in the dying stages. But the match was all but over and the visitors were unable to capitalise on the one-man advantage. It was a hard day for Randwick winning only one march against the students. southerncourier.com.au SPORT Nominate a winner MAJOR SPONSOR J U N I O R S P O R T S S T A R C U M B E R L A N D C O U R I E R THE 2011 Cumberland Cour- ier Junior Sports Star (JSS) Competition is heating up but there’s still plenty of time left to enter.
