Introduction Manufacturers are driven to make luminaires to the need of the

client. The client can be a number of stakeholders. These stakeholders can be the consultant, enduser, designer,

electricity authority, maintenance staff, you and me. Luminaire design today particular outdoor type units also has

many other factors influencing the shape and performance. Lighting pollution

sky glow light trespass disability and discomfort glare.

The challenge is to balance out all the needs and wants.

STANDARDS

Luminaire design is a balance

Luminaire design today is very different to what it was some years ago.

Stakeholders today are more conscious of good lighting practice and the effect on the environment.

As a result, Standards are introduced to help safeguard these values.

Aiming a floodlight up into the sky to light a building is now considered unacceptable.

Installing a streetlight with a bare lamp in a glass bowl is equally unacceptable.

Specifications from consultants are more and precise and stringent than ever before.

As a result the general design of outdoor fittings are changing to meet these needs.
