A Guide to Safe Use of the

Wheelchair Lift Located in the Lowndes Hall Auditorium,

Room 7175A, at Wiregrass Georgia

Technical College.

The wheelchair lift is located in the Lowndes Hall auditorium, room 7175A. It is used to elevate persons in wheelchairs to stage level providing them access to the stage.

The auditorium is located off of the lobby on the 1st floor, west end of Lowndes Hall.

The wheelchair lift is located to the right of the stage. It is a Garaventa GSL ARTIRA inclined platform lift.

The wheelchair lift is an all electric unit which allows wheelchair users unassisted use and access to the stage level. Keys to operate this lift are issued by the Security Dept. at ext. 3175 or Facilities dept. at ext. 5118 or ext. 3075

The main power switch for the wheelchair lift is located on the wall to the left of the lift. It is normally left in the “ON” position.

Step One:

Make sure that the main power switch is in the “ON” position.

Step Two:

Make sure that the equipment breaker is in the “ON” position. It is located at the top of the track rail. The lift will not operate with equipment breaker in the “OFF” position. It is normally left in the “ON” position.

Step Three:

Locate the lift controls located on the wall to the right of the lift. Be sure to read the

operating instructions and the lift capacity information located above these controls.

Step Four:

Insert the key and turn it to the “ON” position. The up down arrow buttons will illuminate green. If these do not illuminate, then check to insure that the main power switch, the equipment breaker, and the Emergency Stop switch are all in the “ON” position. The Emergency Stop switch is located near the controls on the lift and is used by the user to kill power in emergency situations. Should any of these three switches be in the “OFF” position, the lift will not operate.

In an emergency, the user should push in on the Emergency Stop button(red button) located just above the green lift buttons. The lift will not operate until the Emergency Stop button is reset. To reset the Emergency Stop button, pull out until it clicks.

During the lift chair operation, the strobe located on the wall above the lift will flash and alarms will chime. This is to warn occupants in close proximity of possible danger during lift use. The lift is equipped with many safety switches around and under the lift platform that will automatically stop the lift when pressure exceeds a few pounds.

Step Five:

Push the down arrow button to lower the lift platform.

The lift platform should lower fully and be flush with the floor.

Step Six:

Remove the key from the wall controls and roll the wheelchair onto the lift platform. The wheelchair wheels should be locked at this time to prevent the chair from rolling during operation.

Step Seven:

Insert the lift key in to the on-board control panel and turn to the “ON” position. At this time, the safety bars will lower around the user to prevent them from falling from the lift.

On-board up arrow button to raise the lift.

Step Eight:

Use the on-board up arrow button to raise the platform to the stage level.

Step Nine:

Once the lift is fully at stage level, the exit ramp will drop in place and the safety arms will raise out of the operators way to allow exit. The user should turn the key to “OFF” position, remove it from the on-board panel, unlock their wheels and exit the lift.

Step Ten:

When the user is ready to leave the stage, they should enter the lift, lock their wheels, insert the key and turn the key to ”ON”.

Step Eleven:

Push the down arrow button to lower the lift. At this time, the safety bars will automatically lower around the user.

Step Twelve:

When the lift is fully down, the safety arms will raise and the user should unlock their wheels, remove the key, and exit the lift.

Step Thirteen:

Insert the key on the wall controls located on the right side to the lift and turn the key to the “ON” position.

Step Fourteen:

Push the green arrow up button to raise the lift to the stored position.

Raise the lift fully to the stored position so it is ready for future use.

Step Fifteen:

When the lift is fully raised, turn the key to “OFF” and remove it from the control panel.

Step Eighteen:

Return the lift keys to the department they were borrowed.
