"STUDY CALLS SMOKERS GREATER HEART RISKS"New York Times Service (Free Press)

NEW YORK—Men who smoke cigarets regularly run a40 per cent greater risk of dying of coronary heart diseasethan do nonsmokers.

This is the conclusion of anew medical study that for thefirst time has established a definite link between cigaret smok-ing and measurable body chemical changes believed to be pre-cursors of fatal disease.

• * *

According to the report, the link has been establishedbetween smoking, the presence in the bloodstream of giantparticles of fatty materials, and the development of coronaryheart disease.

This affliction is one of the leading single causes of deathin the nation today.

Coronary heart disease is an affliction in which the majorvessels that supply blood to the heart become thickened andunable to supply enough blood to keep the oYgan going.

The new study is published in the current issue of geri-atrics, a scientific monthly concerned with diseases of aging. It was financed at the University of California by the AtomicEnergy Commission.

It is likely no fear is more terrible and more importantto counteract than is fear of the unknown. For that reasonsoldiers in World War I were required to go through gaschambers wearing masks and to sample non-toxic gases with-out them. For that reason "submariners" in training havebeen required to go out through underwater escape tubeswearing Momsen lungs, aviators and paratroopers in trainingto jump off towers with parachutes, and infantrymen to ad-vance behind artillery barrages and to crawl beneath ceilingsof machine-gun fire, ✓

If this preparatory conditioning has proved its worth—-as apparently it has—is there anything to be said against theprograms of the Air Force and the Marine Corps to conditionfliers against possible Communist "brainwashing" tortures?

There is, and it is a great deal. For the hazards of theother attempts at conditioning are almost entirely impersonal. The hazards of mock "brainwashing" are moral and psycho-logical. And as such they involve even more danger to theinstructor than to the trainee. For to make such training "real-istlc" Is to open the doors and swing back the gates to sadismand to grant gratuitous license to brutality. It could be old-time college hazing compounded.

This is not to argue that these perils of captivity shouldbe glossed over. They could be described and dramatizedwithin limits. And instruction and practice In avoiding thesnares of enemy interrogation could hardly b« emphasizedtoo much. But exercises in torture, however carefully "super-vised,'* are not only dangerous; they are debasing. And we

think the American people will tell the military so.

'WORST' SMOG HITS COASTLOS ANGELES NEAR CRISIS

(Detroit Times)LOS ANGELES, Sept. 14 (INS)—The Los Angeles area,

scarcely recovered from a record-breaking "killer" heat wave, suffered its worst smog attack in history yesterday.

The smog neared a second alert stage, which could disruptindustry and traffic, before it began to recede.

A first alert was cancelled after three hours and nineminutes—the longest of seven alerts since the smog warningsystem became effective last June.

HITS 93 DEGREESThe temperature hit a peak of 93 degrees.Smog authorities foresaw another possible smog alert

today, basing their prediction on a prospective inversion ceil-ing of 1,000 feet.

The dirty gray that marks heavy smog and causes eyesto smart, noses to run and throats to burn, sent the ozonereading to high of .9 parts per million parts of air in theVernon industrial district.

NEAR 2D ALERTThat was only .1 point from the second alert stage.Gov. Knight was reported "standing by" to declare a state

of emergency under the California disaster act if a third alertdensity of 1.5 parts of ozone per million parts of air had been

The Devil's Democrats—-(Continued from Back Page)

Reaction against that doctrine soon put into the Const!-tuion an amendment limiting the presidential tenure for anyindividual to no more than eight years. This newspaper op-posed "indispensability" in the 1940's because we felt some-thing akin to the Nazi worship of a personal "leader" wasinvolved. The exaltation of any person fits ill with the ideasof democracy and the responsibilities of each citizen.

The President senses this, and on several occasions hassought to combat the concept as applied to himself. His latestwarning to shun a one-man outlook was issued to the Republi-can state chairmen following their announcement that they"like Ike better than ever." His great popularity may naturallycause them to regard his candidacy as essential to Republicansuccess in 1956. He, too, may be persuaded that his work ofreuniting his party and reestablishing the two-party systemcould use another four years. He would doubtless like also tocarry on in his drive for peace.

But at this time he is asking his party to unite not on thebasis of his personality but of its philosophy. In his remarksto party leaders he sought to turn their thought in that direc-tion. Most usefully he pointed to Lincoln's reference to gov-ernment by the people, with emphasis on individual responsi-bility. Mr. Eisenhower has had less than three years in office.Millions of Americans hope he will serve another term. Buthe is right in resisting—and helping others resist—the "indis-pensable man" concept.

The Devil's Alcoholic Poison—-(Continued from Back Page)

But a few days ago the acting chairman of the CAB wrotethe president of the Air Transport Association that publieprotests have become "more pronounced," and that if thoboard decides safety is involved corrective steps may bo re-quired.

Which seems to be a bit of an understatement. For whilethe CAB was still sending out its memorandum the Air LinePilots Association and the Stewards and Stewardesses Asso-ciation had voted to call on the airlines to cease serving liquoraloft and on the CAB to forbid it.

Numerous letters of protest have streamed into this news-paper. Among these was a letter from an airlines captain ofalmost 20 years' experience who called the practice "com-promising with safety." This newspaper has protested edi-torially and described the situation in news stories. One con-gressman served notice three weeks ago he would introduceprohibitive legislation if the CAB or the airlines failed to act.

The Air Transport Association president says he is sug-gesting a self-imposed code to other airline executives. Ifwhat It proposes to do or cease doing is any key to what theoffending lines have been permitting, then the situation is noless than shocking.
