Iamhomeless.It’snotthefirsttimeeither,buthopefullyit’llbethelast.Eachtime(therehavebeentwo)Ihavehadtorelinquishmydog(s)inordertofindshelter.

ThehomelesssheltersintheFargo-Moorheadareadonotacceptdogsoranyotherpets—serviceoroth-erwise.ThefirsttimeIwasluckyenoughtohaveaneighborwhowouldtakemytwobeautifulcom-panionsuntil4LuvofDogRescuecouldassessthemandplacethemwithfosterandthenpermanentparents.Thesecondtime,IwasabletoreturnmybelovedDuketohisoriginalowner.

AsIsaid,Iwaslucky.

Mostpeoplewhofindthemselveshomelessdonothavemanyop-tions.Theycanrelinquishtheirdogsorpetstofriends,familyormorethanlikelyalocalrescueorHumaneSociety.That’siftheydon’tfindthemselvesdesperateenoughtotietheanimaltoafence,treeorleaveitatthepound.AndIcantellyoufromexperience,thatisusuallyanactofdesperation.

Veryrarelyisitdonemaliciously,nomatterhowitappearstotheaverageperson,onewhowillgohometoasafeplace,awarmbedandfamilythatnight.

Manyhomelesschoosetoliveonthestreets,underbridges,orinthewoodsinordertonotbecomeseparatedfrompossiblytheonlytruelove,companionshipandloy-altytheyhaveleft.ThefirsttimeIwashomeless,Iwatchedawomanandherdaugh-terworktoconcealasmallfamilyfriend.Atoydogcarrierwasbur-iedunderthesepeople’sworldlybelongingsinthebackseatofan

ancientvehicle.Theyvisitedthedogseveraltimesaday,and,Ihoped,tookitforwalks,fedandgaveitwater.Theyleftthebackwindowcracked,butitwasAugustandthetemperaturewouldgethighduringtheday.Otherpatronsofthisshelterwouldconstantlyre-mindthesepeopletowaterthedogoftenandsomeeventriedtodoitontheirown.Whydidtheykeepthedoginthebackseatwhereitclearlydidn’tbelong?Becausethedogwasapartofthefamilyandgettingridofitisakintoleavingachildwithstrangers.

IlefttheshelterbeforeIfoundoutwhathappenedtothatdog,butmyferventhopeisthatthefamilydidtherightthing.Whatistherightthing?Well,theHumaneSocietysaysthattheyfindabandoneddogsattheirdooraboutthreetofourtimesayearandreceivephonecallsaboutabandoneddogsaboutonceamonth.

Canyouimaginebeinginthissitu-ation?Whatwouldyoudo?Andwhatcanwedoasacommunitysothatisn’tevenaquestion?

Beingpreparedintheeventofanaccidentcanmeanthedifferencebetweenaminorinjuryandseri-oustrauma,whichiswhyeveryhouseholdshouldnotonlyhaveahumanfirstaidkit,butapetoneaswell.Petfirstaidkitscanbeveryexpensiveatabout$80forawell-equippedkit,whichiswhymanydogownerssim-plysay“whatarethechances?”andforgetaboutit.Insteadofbuyingapre-madecase,Icreatedmyownwithsuppliesthatwerebothgen-eraltodogfirstaidandspecifictomydog’sbreed.Adogfirstaidkitcanalsodoubleasahumankitbecausemanyoftheitemsareusedinboth,withtheexceptionofafewminorchanges.

Someofthemostbasicsuppliestohaveinapetfirstaidkitinclude:

•Adogfirstaidbook.Findonethatcoversawidevarietyoffirstaidinformation,especiallydogCPR.•Latexgloves•Emergencycontactnumbers.Foremergenciessuchaspoisoning,itisadvisedtoconsultaprofessionalbeforeapplyingfirstaid.•Tweezers•Cottonballs•Gauzepadsandroll•Firstaidtape.Forsecuringban-dages,firstaidtapeworksmuchbetterthanstickbandages.•Disinfectant•Salinesolution.Usingthisisaneffectivewaytoremovedebrisfrombothhumanandcanineeyes.

•Antihistamine.Consultavetbe-foreusinganymedicationonyourdogbothforanappropriatedosageandtoavoidaccidentalpoisonings.•HydrogenPeroxide.Thiscanbeusedtoinducevomiting,butshouldonlybeusedafterconsultingavet.Insomesituations,vomitingmaycausemoredamageandisnot

encouraged.•Antibacterialwipes•Rectalthermom-eter.Adog’sbodytemperatureis100to102.5degreesFahrenheit.•Amuzzlefittedforyourdog.Whileyourdogmaybefriendly,somedogs

becomeaggressivewhenscaredorinpain.•Asmallbagofcornstarchorflour.Boththesecanbeusedasaquickstopforbrokennails.•Asmallhandtowel

TheseadultChihuahuas’fostersaystheyhavecomeoutoftheirshellsandaresweetlittleladies.Theyarelovingthiswarmerweatherandliketogooutsidetoworkontheirtans!Thesepupsarepottypadtrained,butareencouragedtodobusinessoutside,whichisaniceoptionwhenwearegoneforalongerperiodoftime.Becauseoftheirsizeandperson-alities,theystillgetnervouswhenmeetingnewpeopleanddogs,butoncetheyrealizeitisOK,handleitprettywell.Whilebothlovesnuggletime,BrittanywillbethefirsttoapproachyouandaskforhugswhileCoCopreferstodoatapdanceroutinetogetyourat-tention.Theyliketospendtheirdayssnugglingonthesofa,butarereadyforawalkordayatthedogparkanytime.Thesedogsarelittlesweetheartsthatwouldloveacalmhomeenvironmentwithsomeonewhowillgivethemtheloveandattentiontheycrave.

We’veallseenitwhilerunningerrandsonahotday—adogleftinacar,sometimeswiththewindowscracked.It’sadangerouspracticethatcankillafour-leggedfriendinthetimeittakestogetthroughashortshoppinglist.Perhapsthepetownerthinksthatit’skindertobringFidoalong,ratherthanleavehimhomealone.Buttherealityis,onamild70-degreeday,theinsideofacarparkedintheshadecanquicklyreachmorethan90degrees.Whentheweatherrisesintothe80or90-degreerange,theinsideofacarcanreachnearly120degreesinfewerthan30minutes.

Sincedogsdonotsweat,theycannotcoolthemselvesinahotvehicle.Caninespanttoreleaseexcessheat.Theycanalsoreleasesomeheatfromtheirpawpads.However,beingtrappedinthehot,stuffyairinsideofacarpreventseitherofthesefunctionsfromef-ficientlyreducingadog’sbodytemperature.Anydogcansufferfromheatstroke,butdogswithflatfacessuchasBulldogs,PugsandPekingeseareparticularlysuscepti-bletooverheatingquickly,accord-ingtoWebMD’sonlineDogHealthCenter.Thesignsthatadogisindistressincludeexcessivepantinganddrooling,troublebreathing,fastheartbeat,vomitingordiarrhea,seizuresandunconsciousness.
