Alu-CoatedPiston Rings
In order to reduce the running-in time when testing compo-nents on our 4T50MX research engine, we have developed an aluminium-bronze coating for the sliding surface of piston rings. Aluminium-bronze is a well-known material in bearing applications. Furthermore, it has shown excellent results as a piston ring coating and, consequently, it has been introduced on new engines in order to reduce the running-in time and the cylinder oil consumption.
As part of our ongoing programme for modernising spare parts, Alu-Coat rings are now also offered as an alternative standard for MAN B&W MC type engines already in service.
The introduction of aluminium-bronze coated rings means that the normal increase in the cylinder oil feed rate after changing
piston rings can be omitted. When changing cylinder liners, the oil consumption during running-in may also be reduced considerably.
The technical explanation for the effect of the Alu-Coat is that no scuf ng occurs when using the material combination Alu-minium Bronze/Grey Cast Iron as the wear component in a diesel engine cylinder. Furthermore, the Alu-Coat contributes to the running-in of the cylinder liner so that when the Alu-Coat has worn off after some 1000 running hours, both the liner and the piston rings will have been perfectly run-in.
