Dr. Scot t Kindred -Barnes
Born and raised in the An-
napolis Valley, Scott was an
amateur boxing champion
before his interest in both
the history of sports and
psychology moved him to
study at university. He completed a B.A. in
history from Acadia University and received
his M.Div. degree from Acadia Divinity Col-
lege. Scott’s two research degrees at the
University of Toronto focused on Refor-
mation history and theology. He continues
to research and publish on the history of
religious persecution and toleration in the
West and in Reformation studies. He has a
particular interest in the ideas and legacies
of Roger Williams and Richard Hooker. In
August 2011 Scott published his first book
on Richard Hooker and the English Refor-
mation entitled Richard Hooker’s Use of His-
tory in His Defense of Public Worship: His
Anglican Critique of Calvin, Barrow, and the
Puritans (Lewiston *Queenston* Lampeter:
The Edwin Mellen Press, 2011).
Scott is a Governing Board Member on the
Canadian Council of Churches. His theology
of ministry and worship has been informed
by both his diversity of experiences and his
keen interest in the Bible and the history of
ideas. Scott and his wife, Kerry, have one
daughter, Elizabeth.

Conference Topic
“Realizing Heaven on Earth”: Four
Words in the Service of God Revisited
While important to the history and
practice of Christianity, the Theological
words “ecumenical, catholic, evangeli-
cal,” and “liberal” are often misunder-
stood. Thus, the Rev. Dr. Scott Kin-
dred-Barnes will invite Christians to
explore these concepts historically,
theologically and pastorally. What does
each concept mean? Are these con-
cepts contradictory to one another?
How are they relevant to the Christian
life and Church Renewal? Is it time to
reassess these concepts in light of the
Church’s mission in the twenty-first
century?
