WaylandWelcome to
The Wayland Area Chamber of Commerce would like to extend a warm welcome to all who come to our beautiful city. Whether you re-side here, are employed here, are looking to relocate here, or are simply here on a visit-Welcome!
Wayland is located on the east side of beautiful Allegan County, half way between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. Many people are drawn to Wayland due to the rural environment yet easy access to US-131.
Wayland is a community that sets high standards and goals – then works to accomplish them. Most recently, Wayland held its fi rst ever Relay for Life event through the American Cancer Society. The Way-land “Relay” teams had fun and worked hard hosting events and fund-raisers for this cause. All of the hard work paid off when the thirty-plus teams well exceeded any expectations when the fi nal dollar amount of over $53,000 raised was announced.
As a Michigan Main Street Community, Wayland is in the midst of re-vitalizing our great downtown area. This is a volunteer based program where residents, business owners, and anyone interested in bettering the downtown area can be involved.
This directory profi les our community and the surrounding area. In it you will fi nd a strong focus on the businesses within the chamber, as well as community information, Wayland history, parks and recreation information, area events, and important phone numbers.
The chamber encourages you to support your local businesses by shopping locally fi rst. We also invite you to visit our website at www.waylandchamber.org.
Sincerely,
Denise BehmExecutive Director

What our members have to say about the chamber....
“I have been extremely impressed with the Wayland Area Cham-ber of Commerce. The Chamber works very hard to provide a great value to their members; from after hours networking events, a very fun golf outing, and a business expo that constantly raises the bar year after year. Not only does the Chamber help us con-nect with other business owners in our community, it also helps us gain exposure for our business.” ~Dr. Elizabeth RobinsonElizabeth Robinson, DDS
“The Wayland Chamber is a remarkable organization within this community. From the events put on such as the Annual Business Expo, Member Networking Events, and their Chamber Newslet-ter, they are always exceeding my expectations. I look forward to being a part of the Chamber for years to come.”~Josh Hoekstra, General ManagerPeerebooms Garden Center & Greenhouse
“Godwin’s Chamber membership has generated not just busi-ness, but valuable relationships as well. The many educational, promotional, and networking opportunities that the Chamber of-fers allows us to participate in and support our community.”~Rick Lameyer, Co-OwnerGodwin Plumbing, Inc.

Michigan is the traditi onal homeland of the confederati on of Indian tribes known as the Council of the Three Fires, the Niswimishkodewin. This group of Indians originated on the east coast and moved into this area about 500 years ago, when according to oral history, they split into three groups at the Straits of Mackinac. The Ojibwa (or Chippewa) migrated north and west and into Wisconsin and became the Keepers of the Faith, the Odawa (or Ott awa) remained at the Straits and be-came the Keepers of Trade, and the Potawatomi moved down the eastern shore of Lake Michigan into the Lower Peninsula and were designated Keepers of the Fire, Bodéwadmi, the Potawatomi. Collecti vely, the people of the Three Fires are also known as Anishinaabe, The True People, or The People Who Live Correctly.
In the mid-1600s the Potawatomi were forced out of Michigan by the Iroquois who took over the profi table fur trade with the French. When the fur trade died out about one hundred years later, the Potawatomi began returning. The Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band, also known as the Gun Lake Tribe, sett led in this area between the Grand River and the Kalamazoo River. However, land cessions to the Americans began soon aft er their return and in the period between 1807 and 1842, one treaty aft er another drasti cally reduced their territory, promising annuiti es and gift s that never materialized. Forced removal west of the Mississippi occurred between 1834 and 1842, however a few groups, including the Gun Lake Tribe, managed to remain in Michigan.
Traditi onally, the Potawatomi lived in large sett led villages in houses made of bent saplings covered with bark and reed-woven mats. In additi on to hunti ng and fi shing, they were farmers of the land, raising corn, beans, squash and tobacco. They harvested large quanti ti es of wild rice in the fall and maple sugar in the spring along with ber-ries, nuts and other wild plants. In winter they broke up into smaller villages to make bett er use of the hunti ng resources.
Much of Potawatomi spiritual and religious life was organized around clans. Each clan had a sacred bundle which was the focus of oral traditi ons which recorded the origins of that clan. Specifi c songs and dances were also as-sociated with the clan bundles, and each clan had specifi c ritual obligati ons as well, and types of knowledge, such as parti cular medicines and ceremonies. The clan structure and the associated bundles were the gift s the culture hero Wisaka brought to individuals in the past through dreams or visions. Historically, the Midewiwin or Medicine Lodge was the most important communal religious functi on, and initi ates sought health and long life through its teachings.
Today, Potawatomi culture is vibrant and alive. They are working hard to main-tain, protect, and nurture their spiritual and historic values. The wisdom of tribal elders is treasured and their positi on in the community is valued. Pro-tecti ng and maintaining tribal lands and other natural resources is a major con-cern, as is enhancing, and sustaining the health, safety, and quality of life of all tribal members.

Wayland is proud to embrace local Arts. Every August, the City of Wayland hosts the annual Concerts in the Park. This is a fantastic event that brings the local community to the City Park to listen to a variety of music.
Debuting in December of 2009 was the Art Hop. This downtown event was held in conjunction with the annual Christmas tree lighting and festivities. Held annually on the fi rst Friday in December, the Art Hop includes over eighteen downtown businesses which become evening Art Venues. Over thirty artists take part in this successful event displaying and selling their artwork. Many Art Venues provide live music. At some locations, refreshments such as wine, cheese and crackers, cider, hot cocoa and cookies are served. Refreshments are also provided during the tree lighting ceremony and festivities during the evening
of the Art Hop. Due to the large number of families taking part in the horse drawn wagon rides in 2009, those who attended Art Hop 2010 were treated to two teams of horses. This meant shorter lines and more rides for visitors.
In addition, Wayland is proud of the various arts, culture, and enrichment opportunities it of-fers to residents and visitors. Wayland Union Schools has an outstanding Fine and Perform-ing Arts program that continues to receive awards at the state level. Students consistently receive high ratings at festivals and solo and ensembles. Recently, the Honors Choir was one of the top twelve choirs in the state. The choir students perform throughout the state dur-ing competitions. Back home in Wayland, the choir performs throughout the year for various school and community events. Students are offered many fi ne arts courses to choose from as well as opportunities to perform in concerts and competitions.
In addition, the local school offers students many opportunities in band, art, and theater. The band can be heard during local home football games and marching in the local parades. The theater class
performs many plays throughout the year. Many local artists re-ceive an opportunity to feature their artwork on the streets of the downtown area, at Daily Brews Café, or at the mini park.
