Financially, this past year was very difficult for many businesses, non-profits, families, and individuals. Many companies struggled and some even closed. Just about everyone knows at least one person who was laid off or was forced to take an unpaid furlough. State budget shortfalls persist. It was – and continues to be – an uncertain time.
As resources dwindle, more people seek help. Some never needed services before. From year one to yeartwo of operations, 2-1-1 – United Way’s toll-free information and referral service – saw a 69 percent increasein calls about basic needs such as food and heat and calls seeking legal assistance with evictions and fore- closures. Non-profit organizations – including United Way – have not been exempt from the economic down- turn. Charitable giving is down, and all non-profits are feeling the pinch as demand for services increases.
Our journey during the past year has been difficult to navigate, but United Way’s stewards (a.k.a. the board of directors) have charted a course that effectively utilizes limited resources today and provides guidance for our success going forward. Their actions include:Re-aligning funds – to bolster the most effective programs serving our communities, we re-evaluated the use of the General Fund (undesignated dollars) based on the 2009 Community Assessment. As a result, a modest shift increased the portion of support for the Child Care and Respite Care Impact Area. The Board also made other adjustments in funding levels. Based on these changes, the reduction in available funds for this year’s Community Investment process was held at (3.7%) from last year.
Helping agencies recruit volunteers – we’re training agencies on how to post their volunteer information on www.VolunteerNH.org, and promoting volunteer opportunities through our e-newsletter and social media.
Promoting 2-1-1 – working with other United Ways, the state department of Health and Human Services, and veterans’ orga-nizations, we engaged WMUR-TV in creating a public service announcement. We also collaborated with other United Ways, WYCN-TV13, and the New England Patriots to have linebacker Jerod Mayo tape a PSA about 2-1-1.
Enhancing collaboration with regional groups – our work with the Greater Nashua Workforce Housing Coalition is elevat-ing the affordable housing discussion. Working with the Greater Nashua Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistant program, we were able to bring more than $2.47 million in tax refunds back to Greater Nashua working families. In addition, the Greater Nashua Community Prevention Coalition has created local groups and conducted workshops to curb under-age drinking.
As we strive to improve our community during this difficult time, partnerships are more important than ever. Advancing the common good is in everyone’s interest. We all benefit when families are financially stable, when youth receive an education that prepares them for a good job, and when people have good health. No one organization can take on any of these issues alone. Working with businesses, government, nonprofit agencies, community stakeholders, and others, United Way recruits people and organizations that bring the passion, expertise, and resources needed to get things done.
Everyone can and should pull together to advance the common good. We’ve all seen the LIVE UNITED T-shirt. It is a great call to action. So I ask you to not only wear the shirt, but to LIVE it. Whether you give, advocate, or volunteer, you can be part of a broad-based effort to improve conditions in our community. Lead by example. Tell your friends and get them involved. Share your LIVE UNITED stories on social networks and encourage others to do the same. You have the power to effect change. When we work together, that power is multiplied many times. Let’s make it work for all of us.
