Step 1. The software of Filosoft

The software of Filosoft can be found on the following website:http://www.filosoft.ee/Frequently, the Estonian words that you find in texts cannot be found in the dictionary. You need a “lemmatizer”.A lemmatizer finds you the form of the dictionary entry. You have other useful freeware on this site as well.

Once you have the dictionary form of the word, you can look it up in an electronic dictionary, e.g. under Eesti-inglise (Estonian-English) at

Additional help: the parser

A parser is an electronic tool that helps you to decode sentence structure. You need it with longer sentences, where you do not have a traditional Subject-Verb-Object word order and where many words modify each other. The parser is also a lemmatizer. It shows the dictionary entries of the words in the sentence, and it shows the relationships between the words within the sentence.

Instructions for using the parser

1.Download the parser (author of this parser: Kaili Müürisep) from the following website: www.ut.ee/~kaili/nptool/Oktoober.zip

2. Having unpacked the parser, you need to start the program by clicking on the icon that is indicated with blue highlight on the follolwing slide.

3. Copy the text you need to analyze in the upper window and see the solution in the lower one. Don’t panic, it looks more complicated than it is!
