Congratulations are in order for the wonderful achievements of our Year 8 Debating Team at the recent State finals of the Premiers Debating Challenge for Years 7 and 8. The team, consisting of Angela Weckert, Ethan Delaney, Cheyenne Sciascia and Abigail Kittler, was the only team to win all four of their debates in the preliminary rounds which is truly outstanding. These wins were against the following schools - Gosford High School, Sydney Girls High School, Armidale High School and James Ruse Agricultural High School.
In the semi-final, Orange High went up against a formidable team from Smiths Hill High School which is located on the southern outskirts of Sydney. Orange were affirmative to the topic "Should religious schools be banned" and unfortunately, Smiths Hill won and were very strong in terms of their rebuttal and their arguments which strongly stipulated that parents should have the right to send their children to a religious affiliated school if they wish.
Orange High is very proud of the achievements of this team and their success caps off a very successful year of debating. We've had the Senior team also reach the State semi-finals for Years 11 and 12, the Year 9 team reach the semi-final of the region, Molly Burton selected as a Central West representative for the Year 9 and 10 team, and now, the amazing efforts of our Year 8 team at a State level.
Last Friday our school was strongly represented by our
Student Leadership Team at the White Ribbon Day event at
the Orange Regional Museum. Our students were
phenomenal in assisting and sponsoring the events
throughout the day and helped ensure the overall success of
the day sharing a strong message and making a powerful
stand in relation to domestic violence.
Congratulations to our incredibly talented Creative and
Performing Arts students for the amazing Creative and
Performing Arts Showcase last Wednesday. It was terrific to
see the high standard of talent, collaboration and achievement
throughout the night in visual and the performing arts.
Congratulations also to our Aboriginal Education Team for a terrific
community morning tea celebrating achievement and outlining
future directions for 2018. In particular it was terrific to see not
only parents, but many community members also taking an active
interest in our student’s achievements. It is wonderful to see strong
data emerging from 2017 further supporting our instincts that the
achievement of our Aboriginal students is increasing further with
a more than 3% improvement in attendance in 2017 over 2016
and a doubling in the number of Aboriginal students finishing
school compared to two years ago. Those statistics prove together
we can, and are, making positive changes, furthermore by
maintaining a strong collaborative direction and high expectations,
we will see even further enhancements to achievement and
retention.

Well done to our Year 9-10 Premier's Sporting leaders who were involved in our workshops on Friday. Athletics
NSW, Netball NSW and Rugby League were all involved with this years program. Our students learnt new skills, and
developed existing skills, in their chosen sport. We hope that these students will be able to use these skills to guide
and lead junior students in the future.
Ms Livingstone
Mrs Winslade and Ms Dray had the honour of
attending Lauren Kerwick’s NSW CHS Sporting
Blue ceremony.
Only fifty four students out of 150,000 state wide
have received this award during 2017.
It was a great afternoon, celebrating the very best
sporting achievements in New South Wales
school sport, with Ian Thorpe as the guest
speaker.
Congratulations Lauren and we look forward to
hearing about your future achievements in
Triathlon.
Cosette Craig travelled to Dubbo to receive her well-deserved award at the Victor Cheng Science Award
Ceremony last week. What an excellent ambassador for Orange High School. Congratulations.
Brothers 4 Recovery visited our Year 10 and Year 11 boys on Tuesday afternoon. They shared their inspiring journeys of battling and overcoming substance abuse with the students. The Brothers 4 Recovery are a group of Indigenous men travelling to schools throughout Australia hoping to spread awareness of the effects of drugs and alcohol. They definitely made an impact here at Orange High with the boys.
Last week the Future Moves team hosted the first Strong Moves Camp at Charles Sturt University Bathurst Campus. Three Orange High students, Angel Keed, Holly Simms & Melea Mascord joined the mentoring program along with other students from Riverina, Central West and the Mid North Coast. The girls made many new friends and enjoyed staying on campus, getting a taste of the university lifestyle. After participating in a series of activities designed to strengthen confidence and explore a wide variety of educational options, the girls all agree that the program opened their eyes to the many opportunities and courses available at university.
Congratulations to the U/15 OHS Netball girls who took out the Western Region title this morning. They played against Dubbo South and Mudgee high in the finals and thank their competitors for great sportsmanship. They now progress to the knockout finals in Sydney next year. Well done Milly, Caitlin, Oni, Poppy, Megan, Hailey, Izzy and Georgia!
