Old Testament Story Pictures

• Red Sea - salvation baptism in water• Desert - dying to self, dying to slavery,

learning obedience• Promised Land - Overcoming life,

strongholds destroyed, Abundant life• Jordan - second baptism, empowerment

under Yshua (Moses, Law cannot take you in).

14

CompareIsrael & Corinthians

• Both recently born• Both in desert• Both receiving fresh Scripture• Both looking back to slavery• Both waiting for the return of their leader• Both complaining, grumbling, testing

God, idolatry and sexual immorality

15

…and that Rock wasChrist. (10:4)

• In Exodus 17 Moses is told to strike the Rock once: the Law broke the Rock and water flowed.

• In Numbers 20 Moses is told to speak to the Rock and water comes out, but Moses struck it twice

16

It is possible to displease God in your life and yet be saved.

1. God was not pleased with Moses because he violated the pattern.

2. God made him die in the desert.3. God prevented Moses from going into the

Promised Land.4. Luke 9:30 has Moses and Elijah talking with

Jesus on what appears to be Mt Hermon “in glory” Luke 9:31.

5. Moses was saved eternally.

17

Now these things were our examples…

• What follows are four stories that are examples

• Please do not forget the story of Moses while you read these

19

Neither be ye idolaters, as [were] some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to

play. (10:7)You grind it up, you mix it with the water

of the Word, and you drink the water with the ground up idol in it. (Ex 32)

Reminds us of the test for an unfaithful wife in Numbers 5.

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of

serpents. (10:9)• Numbers 21:4-9• Paul doesn’t put the stories in order• Serpents bite between idolatry at the

beginning (Ex 32) and sexual immorality at the end (Nu 25-31)

And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. (Nu 21:5)

Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of

serpents. (10:9)

34

The serpent as a type of Jesus?

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

35

The Serpent as a type of Jesus!

• Look back and get tired. • Look forward and get afraid. • Look around at family issues and grumble. • Look down and get bitten and the poison of sin is in

you• Jesus became sin for us like a bronze serpent while

still alive on the cross• Look up to him and see your sin on him and believe

and live
