OUR HISTORYOUR HISTORY

• 1915 - CG created as an “armed service” but - it had no peacetime reserve.

• 1939 - CG Reserve Act created CG Reserve:

• safety to life at sea & navigable waters• promotion of efficiency• knowledge of laws & rules of sea• facilitating ops of the Coast Guard

• Early in 1942 five German U-Boats arrived off the east coast of the US

• US Navy ordered civilian craft to operate along the 50 fathom curve

• Motorboats & sailing yachts appeared on patrol stations with depth charges stowed awkwardly on deck

• None of the 2000 CGR craft ever sank a U-Boat but, they rescued several hundred survivors of torpedoed merchant ships

• Volunteer Port Security Force helped protect the hundreds of warehouses, piers, and other facilities - direct precursor to Homeland Security

• Airplanes joined the Auxiliary during WWII - the value of aircraft in SAR missions

• 1947 - Four cornerstones established• vessel examination• public education• operations - SAR, safety, regattas• fellowship - pride, satisfaction, fun

• 1955 - Each year the Auxiliary selects 125 high school juniors to spend first week in August at CG Academy learning about career options for CG officers

• One function since early days to provide CG with reports on errors in official nautical charts
