Combining Like Terms

Notes – Combining Like Terms We combine like terms in order to simplify

expressions.

Vocabulary:1. Terms = sets of numbers and/or variables

separated by addition and subtraction

2. Like = the same kind of term

3. To simplify = group together all terms that are the same and add or subtract them

Basket of Fruit!

What are the different types of fruits in here and how many of each kind are there?

3 Apples4 Oranges1 Pineapple2 Kiwi

3a + 4or + 1p + 2k

Combine only the fruit that is the exact same.

Station: Combining Like TermsStep 1: Change subtraction to addition

Step 2: Circle all the variables that are the same (including their coefficient and sign)

Step 3: Add or subtract the numbers. Repeat

Ex: Combine Like Terms-9x² + 4x – 7x + 11x² -9x² + 4x + (- 7x) + 11x²

2x² + 4x + - 7x

2x² - 3x

Station: Combining Like TermsStep 1: Change subtraction to addition

Step 2: Circle all the variables that are the same (including their coefficient and sign)

Step 3: Add or subtract the numbers. Repeat

Ex: Combine Like Terms5m + 9n– 8 + 6m –3n –1 5m + 9n+(- 8) + 6m +(-3n) +(-1)

11 m + 9n +(- 8) +(- 3n) + (-1)

11m + 6n +(- 8) + (-1)

11m + 6n - 9

Practice – Combine Like Terms1) 5a – 3b + 8b - a 2) 10x² + 5x – 4x² + 3x 4a + 5b

3) 4x + 3y – 2xy + 8y – 6xy 4) -7z - 2y – 4z - 9y

4x + 11y – 8xy

5) 10x + 7y – 1 + 3y – 12x + 13 -2x + 10y + 12

6) 3a + 4b – 9a + 10 – 5c + 7 – 4b + 10a 4a –5c + 17

6x² + 8x

-11z -11y
