Local receiver ties record in McMaster’s Vanier Cup victory

He was the lone Oakville resident on thefield during Friday’s Vanier Cup, but RobertBabic certainly made his presence felt.

The 21-year-old receiver tied a Vanier Cuprecord with 12 receptions, helping theMcMaster Marauders to a dramatic 41-38double-overtime win over the Laval Rouge etOr in the Canadian Interuniversity Sportfootball championship game.

Babic, who averaged slightly more thanfive catches per game during the regularseason and playoffs, finished the Vanier Cupwwith 135 receiving yards. McMaster over-came blowing a 23-0 halftime lead and miss-ing a potential game-winning field goal atthe end of regulation to win its first VanierCup title in school history.

Six gold for Russell at Canada Cup

Dolphins Swim Club member Sinead Russell won six gold medals and set several meet records at last weekend’s Canada Cup swim meet in Etobicoke.

Russell swept the open women’s freestyle and backstroke events, winning the 50-metre, 100m and 200m distances in both disciplines. Her 50m and 100m freestyle and 100m and 200m backstroke times were meet records.

Oakville Aquatic Club’s Zack Chetrat added wins in the open men’s 100m and 200m but-terfly. Annie Harrison earned bronze in the open women’s 400m individual medley.

Raiders reach q-finals at OFSAA hoops

The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders weren’t

feeling any shame about their two losses at last week’s provincial girls’ basketball cham-pionships.

Aquinas reached the championship quar-ter-finals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) double-A tour-nament in Brockville, finishing with a 2-2 record. Both of the 15th-seeded Raiders’ losses came to teams that went on to earn medals.

“I’m very pleased,” said Aquinas coach Mike Giammichele. “Our goal was to reach the quarter-finals or win the consolation championship.”

After opening the tournament with a 48-27 loss to St. Francis, the Raiders doubled up Denis O’Connor 64-32. Aquinas then downed St. Ignatius 44-40 before being eliminated with a 49-34 loss to Barrie Central.

Kayla Celestini led the Raiders in scoringagainst St. Francis and Barrie Central, whileNycole Lopes was Aquinas’ top scorer in thewins over Denis O’Connor and St. Ignatius.

King's makes provincial consolation semis

The King’s Christian Collegiate CavaliersA were consolation semifinalists at the OFSAA

girls’ basketball single-A tournament in St.Catharines.

King’s went 1-3 at the competition. The14th-ranked Cavaliers fell 29-23 toPenetanguishene and 49-20 to La Jeunesse,then downed Walkerton 33-24 before drop-ping a 41-25 decision to M. Bruyere.

Adetoriola Odentunde was King’s topscorer against Bruyere, Penetanguishene andWalkerton. Marya Van Beilen and SarahSkelding both had six points versus LaJeunesse.
