On this holiday, we remember the defeat of a plot to exterminate the Jews. These plots have, unfortunately, continued throughout the years, and yet we have been saved against these efforts Purim is considered a minor holiday and is not subject to the restrictions of Shabbat, but it is preceded by a minor fast, commemorating Esther’s 3 day fast before approaching the king. Some will also avoid doing work, in commemoration of the holiday. There are many customs and mitzvoth for celebrating Purim. The primary mitzvah is to hear the m’gillah, known as M’gillot Esther. (There are by the way, 5 m’gillot - Esther, Ruth, Song of Songs, Lamentations, and Ecclesiastes). M’gillat Esther is to be read publically and, of course, we “blot out” the villain’s name each time it is said with groggers, feet stomping, yelling, etc. We are commanded to eat, drink and be merry. The Talmud says we are to drink so much that we cannot distinguish between “cursing Haman” and “praising Mordechai”. Of course, for those who cannot or should not drink, they are exempt from this obligation. (Cantor Continued on page 9) Prez’s Menschen-ings Cantor’s Notes Cantor Patti Turner

This month, Jews around theworld celebrate Purim, the festival com-memorating our victory over the wickedHaman. In much of the world, we eat thepopular treat Hamentashen (Haman’s ears)to symbolize our victory. Beside Haman’sears there is other food which symbolizesthe victory of the Jews. Here is a list oftreats from around the world, or should Isay from Hodu to Cush:

Russia - Kulich: In Jewish communities inRussia, it was customary to bake long, sweet challah loaves that resemble ropes, tocommemorate the rope that Haman wantedto hang the Jewish leader Mordechai on(and on which Haman was hanged instead)!

Bulgaria - Caveos Di Aman: For manyJewish communities, pasta has long beenconsidered a traditional Purim dish. Hereis a traditional Bulgarian Purim meal; itname means “Haman’s Hair”.

1 lb vermicelli or spaghettiSalt6 tablespoons olive oilJuice of 2 lemonsBlack pepper30 black olives3 hard boiled eggs

Cook the pasta in boiling salted water untildone al dente. Drain, and dress with theolive oil and lemon juice beaten with saltand pepper. Mix in the olives and garnishwith hard-boiled eggs cut in wedges. Serveat room temperature.

Eastern Europe - Kreplach: There aremany secrets in the Purim story. For in-stance, Esther, the Jewish queen, disguisesher identity. She even has a secret name inaddition to Esther: Hadassah. Most nota-bly, G-d himself is hidden in the PurimMegilla: even though it was G-d who savedthe Jews, His name is hidden in the text. This theme of disguise is carried over intoother areas of Purim: we dress up in cos-tumes, and it is customary to eat “hidden”foods, such as kreplch and ravioli (wherethe filling is covered up with dough) onPurim.

Persia - Nanbrangi: In many communi-ties, seeds such as poppy seeds or sesameseeds are added to Purim delicacies, tosymbolize “Haman’s fleas”. This delicatedessert, decorated with poppy seeds, is atraditional Persian Purim treat.

France - Palmiers: This French Jewishdessert is also meant to evoke the misshap-en ears of Haman. Here is a super easy recipe:

Box of puff pastry2/3 cup powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 425 F. Sprinkle a worksurface with some of the sugar and roll outthe pastry to about ¼ inch thick, in a stripabout 4-8 inches wide. Fold the short endsof the pastry in so that the two edges meetin the middle, in a double-roll shape. Cutthe pastry into slices ½ inch thick. Openthe slices out slightly to form ear shapes.Sprinkle the baking sheet with sugar andput the palmiers flat on the sheet. Bake thepalmiers for 15-20 minutes, turning themover once during cooking.

Greece/Turkey - Haman’s Fingers: InJewish community from Greece and Tur-key, Purim is celebrated by eating wickedHaman’s Fingers. It is phyllo dough filledwith nuts and sugar rolled into fingers, sprinkled with powdered sugar or dipped insugar water.

List and recipes found in Aish.com

Israel- India: Talking about “hidden”food, the Jewish Indians also have a hiddenfood treat for Purim. It is called Puren Puri(do you see the Purim in the words?). Youwill find this dish only at Purim holiday, not at any other days of the year. The dishis made of smooth dough filled withcooked sweet chickpeas mash, flattenedlike a naan or pita and cooked in a dry skil-let.I have to say objectively that the tastiestones are made by my Mom. TerumahExodus 25:1 - 27:19

Moses is commanded by God toconstruct a portable Sanctuary inaccordance with detailed instructions aboutits size, its materials, and the variousancillary ritual objects with which it is tobe furnished. For these purposes thepeople were asked to make a free-willoffering (Terumah) of metals, fabrics, skins, wood, precious stones, oil andspices.

The outer court of the Sanctuarywas a rectangular structure without a roofthat was surrounded by curtains. Itcontained an altar for burnt offerings and awashstand for the priests. All Israelitescould enter this area.

The Tabernacle was divided intotwo sections, separated by a veil. Onlypriests were permitted to enter this area. Itcontained an altar for incense, the seven-branched Menorah and a table for theshowbread.

The inner chamber of theTabernacle, the Holy of Holies, containedthe Ark of the Covenant; the high priestwas accorded access, but only on YomKippur.

Our sidra provides specificinstructions about the design of each ofthese structures and their furnishings.

TetzavehExodus 27:20 - 30:10

This portion is a continuation ofthe detailed listing of the appurtenancesrequired for the functioning of the desertSanctuary, and of the priestly garmentswhich Aaron, the High Priest, and his sonshad to wear when officiating in theSanctuary.

NER TAMID – The expression“Eternal Light” is actually a misnomer;“Regular Light,” while not as lofty anexpression, is a more accurate rendering. The Ner Tamid was kindled each day inthe evening and burned throughout thenight until the morning.

EPHOD – A tunic, waist-lengthgarment worn by the High Priest. It wasclasped together at the shoulders by twoonyx stones on which were engraved thenames of all twelve tribes, symbolicallyidentifying Aaron as the representative ofall the people.

HOSHEN MISHPAT – TheBreastplate of Judgement was a pouchapproximately nine inches square that wassuspended by two gold chains from the

shoulders of the Ephod. It containedtwelve precious stones (four rows ofthree); each engraved with the name of oneof the tribes. These stones comprised theUrim and Tummim which were consultedas an oracle of sorts in decision making.

ROBE OF THE EPHOD – Asleeveless tunic of blue, worn under theEphod. It was fringed with alternatinggolden and pomegranate shaped bells. Thechiming of the bells indicated to the peoplethat the High Priest was performing hisduties.

MITRE – A turban of linen with agold plate affixed to the front, engravedwith words “Kodesh Ladonai” (Holy tothe Lord).

OTHER GARMENTS – TheHigh Priest also wore a woven tunic, girdleand breeches – all made of linen. Ordinarypriests wore these same linen garments, but their headgear was an ordinary turbaninstead of the Mitre.

ALTAR OF INCENSE – Eachmorning and evening incense was burnedon the altar, made of acacia wood andoverlaid with gold. The Altar of Incensewas placed in the tabernacle just in front ofthe veil that covered the Holy of Holies.

Ki TissaExodus 30:11 - 34:35

Final Instructions for the DesertSanctuary- Additional funds for theconstruction of the Sanctuary were to becollected in connection with a census ofthe male Israelite population above the ageof twenty: a silver half-shekel was to becontributed by all. Instructions for thefashioning of a washbasin for the priests’use, and for the compounding of oil andincense (to be used in association with thesacrifices) completed the detailed list ofthe Sanctuary’s structure and contents.Betzalel and Oholiav are to supervise theentire construction project.

The Golden Calf- While Mosesremains on Mount Sinai the people belowclamor for a tangible representation ofGod, and Aaron accedes to their demand, fashioning a Golden Calf. God informsMoses of the sinful proceedings takingplace at the foot of the mountain andthreatens to wipe out the entire nation.Moses pleads successfully that the peoplebe spared, and then descends to restoreorder. However, as Moses approaches thecamp, he is so enraged by the sight andsounds of the revelry that he smashes thetablets of the law that he has brought fromGod. Moses melts the Golden Calf, grindsits remains into a powder which he pours

into a stream, and forces all the people todrink from it. Three thousand ringleadersare slain. The people express theirremorse.

The Second Set of Tablets- Godbids Moses to ascend Mount Sinai onceagain, where he is given a second set of the“Ten Commandments.” Moses received apersonal revelation from God in whichGod imparts to Moses the attributes ofmercy, kindness and truth by which Heguides the Israelites. Moses returns to thecamp after forty days, his face shining witha divine glow. From now on Moses willwear a veil to conceal his features, removing it only when he enters theSanctuary and comes into God’s presence.

VayakhelExodus 35:1 - 38:20

After Moses’ descent from MountSinai with the second set of tablets, heinformed the people of God’s instructionsfor the construction of the Sanctuary.Moses also emphasized the importance ofrefraining from any kind of work onShabbat. The Israelites responded toMoses’ appeal for voluntary contributionsof material and assistance mostgenerously; their donations exceeded whatwas required.

PekudeiExodus 38:21 - 40:38

The total cost incurred in theconstruction of the Sanctuary was countedat Moses’ command under the direction ofItamar, Aaron’s youngest son. The weightof the gold amounted to 29 talents and 730shekels; of the silver to 100 talents and1,775 shekels, and of the brass to 70talents and 2,400 shekels. The work, having been completed with the making ofthe priestly garments, was inspected andapproved by Moses, who blessed thepeople for their magnificent achievement.

The Jewish Fire Brigade

One night outside a small town, afire started inside the local chemical plant. In the blink of an eye, it exploded intomassive flames. The alarm went out to allfire departments for miles around.

When the volunteer fire fightersappeared on the scene, the chemicalcompany president rushed to the fire chiefand said, "All our secret formulas are inthe vault in the center of the plant. Theymust be saved. I'll give $50,000 to the firedepartment that brings them out intact."But the roaring flames held thefirefighters off. Soon more firedepartments had to be called in as thesituation became desperate. As thefiremen arrived, the president shouted outthat the offer was now $100,000 to the firedepartment who could save the company'ssecret files.

From the distance, a lone sirenwas heard as another fire truck came intosight. It was the nearby Chasidic Jewishrural township volunteer fire companycomposed mainly of Jewish, ultra-orthodox men over the age of 65. Toeveryone's amazement, that little broken-down fire engine roared right past all thesleek newer engines that were parkedoutside the plant. Without even slowingdown, it drove straight into the middle ofthe inferno. Outside, the other firemen

watched as the Chasidic old timersjumped off right in the middle of the fireand fought it back on all sides. It was aperformance and effort never seen before.Within a short time, the Chasidic oldtimers had extinguished the fire and savedthe secret formulas.

The grateful chemical companypresident announced that for such asuperhuman feat he was upping thereward to $200,000, and walked over tothank each of the brave fire fighterspersonally. The local TV news reporterrushed in to capture the event on film, asking their chief, "What are you going todo with all that money?"

"Vell," said Moishe Goldberg, the 70-year-old Fire Chief, "Da foist tingve gonna do is fix da brakes on datflipping truck!"

The Squirrel Problem

There were four churches and asynagogue in a small town: a Presbyterianchurch, a Baptist church, a Methodistchurch, a Catholic church, and asynagogue. Each church and thesynagogue had a problem with squirrels.

The Presbyterian church called a meetingto decide what to do about their squirrels. After much prayer and consideration, theyconcluded the squirrels were predestined

to be there and they shouldn't interferewith God's divine will.

At the Baptist church the squirrels hadtaken an interest in the baptistery Thedeacons met and decided to put a waterslide on the baptistery and let the squirrelsdrown themselves. The squirrels liked theslide and, unfortunately, knewinstinctively how to swim so twice asmany squirrels showed up the followingweek.

The Methodist church decided that theywere not in a position to harm any ofGod's creatures. So, they humanelytrapped their squirrels and set them freenear the Baptist Church. Two weeks laterthe squirrels were back when the Baptiststook down the water slide.

But the Catholic Church came up with avery creative strategy. They baptized allthe squirrels and consecrated them asmembers of the church. Now they onlysee them on Christmas and Easter.

Not much was heard from the Jewishsynagogue; they took the first squirrel andcircumcised him. They haven't seen asquirrel since.

Jewish Humor

Another commandment forPurim is the giving of gifts of food ordrink (sh’lach manot), and to makegifts to charity.

There is also a custom to holdcarnival – like celebrations. We performplays and parodies, called shpiels. Wealso wear costumes, which here inAmerica, has been associated withMardi Gras.

One of the things we shouldnotice about M’gillat Esther is, unlike allother books in the Tanakh, Gd.’s name isnot mentioned. From this we can learnthat sometimes Gd. works in mysteriousways – coincidence, if you will (but asGibbs says – “There is no such thing ascoincidence!”). One of my professorstold us, “Coincidence is Gd.’s way ofremaining anonymous”.

The idea of omitting Gd.’s nameis also associated with “hester

panim” (“the concealed face of Gd.”).However, some say that Mordechaidoes make an indirect reference to Gd.by saying to Esther: …if you keep silentin this crisis, relief and deliverance willcome to the Jews from another quarter, while you and your father’s house willperish. And who knows, perhaps youhave attained to royal position for justsuch a crisis, (Esther 4:13-14).

Another explanation for theomission of Gd’s name is “since thebook was written in scroll form andsent to Jews throughout Persia, thename was omitted in case the scroll wasdesecrated in anyway.”

We invite you to attend our Purimcelebration on Friday night, March 10th,where we will hear the M’gillah read, see a great Shpiel, and celebrate withmuch merry making!

departure from Egypt), the Tabernacle waserected under Moses’ personal supervision, and the contents were arranged in theprescribed order. A cloud covered theTabernacle, which was filled with God’sglory. Whenever the cloud lifted it gave thesignal to the Israelites to continue theirjourney.

Thus the Book of Exodusconcludes.
