Introduction

Topic

HunGER in AmERicA is a major issue. There

are hundreds of thousands of households

who do not know where their next meal

will come from. Although related, food

insecurity and poverty are not the same.

unEmPloymEnT rather than poverty is

a stronger predictor of food insecurity.

Food insecurity does not just happen

to people below the poverty level.

Description

THE ScAD muSEum is hosting an

exhibition of your favorite artist, designer,

historical/modern figure, social issue,

object or topic. it is your job to design

the identity and Graphic standards for

the exhibit as well as the Environmental

and Exhibition Graphics.

Concept

FooD inSEcuRiTy can happen to anyone;

hunger has no boundaries. Everyone

has a story to tell and an interesting

one at that. Rather than focusing on the

statistics, which are readily available

to everyone, i am focusing on the real

stories of real people who have been

affected. The title of the exhibition is

Personal Stories Hunger in America.

Introduction [overview]

Discovery [research]

in food insecure households, which

included 32.6 million adults and 16.2

million children. This equates to 14.5%

of all households.

• in 2010, 5.4% of households

experienced very low food security.

• in 2010, households with children

were more likely to experience food

insecurity at 20.2% compared to 11.7%

of households.

• in 2010, households that had higher

rates of food insecurity included

households with children (20.2%),

households with children headed by

single women (35.1%) or single men

(25.4%), Black non-Hispanic households

(25.1%) and Hispanic households

(26.2%).

• in 2009, 8.0% of seniors living alone

were food insecure.

• Food insecurity exists in every county

in America, ranging from a low of 5% in

Steele county, nD to a high of 38% in

Wilcox county, Al.

• in 2010, 4.8% of all u.S. households (5.6

million) accessed emergency food from

a food pantry one or more times.

• Feeding America provides emergency

food assistance to an estimated 37

million low-income people annually,

a 46% increase from 25 million since

Hunger in America 2010.

be served by Feeding America, over 3

million of which are ages 5 and under.

million children lived in food insecure

households in 2010.

• more than 20% of the child population

in 37 states and D.c. lived in food

insecure households in 2010. The

District of columbia (30.7%), oregon

and Arizona (both 29.0%) had the

highest rates of children in insecure

households.

• 62% of client households with

children under the age of 18 reported

participating in the national School

lunch Program, but only 14% reported

having a child participate in a summer

feeding program that provides free

food when school is out.

• 54% of client households with children

under the age of 3 participated in

the Special Supplemental nutrition

Program for Women, infants, and
