ABOUT ME

MA Fashion Design graduate looking to pursue a career as a Fashion Designer for womenswear and menswear apparel. My knowledge of the arts and applied science has helped inform my design practice to help create garments that bring together multiple ideas to form contemporary silhouettes. My research skills have contributed to originality in my work from an aesthetic, garment construction, and design perspective, particularly at the postgraduate level (being able to conceptualise design using theory). Such work is demonstrated in this fashion design portfolio documenting ‘Autumn Eclosion’ - an A/W womenswear 17/18 day and eveningwear collection. Application of my fashion research and design skills for future jersey and woven womenswear products are demonstrated in practice briefs for ASDA and Miss Selfridge.

I hope to use my academic background from both applied sciences and the arts in the fashion design industry to introduce new ideas to garment design and pattern development and to help innovate collections. I have strong leadership and communication skills, and I am now looking for a strong design team in a demanding environment to help me develop as a Fashion Designer.

AUTUMN ECLOSION: WOMENSWEAR AUTUMN/WINTER COLLECTION 17/18

Autumn Eclosion explores themes of diaspora of humans and insects, and adaptation through interaction with new surroundings bringing together tradition and the beauty of acculturation. Colours have a dark quality with the use of predominantly teal, with dusky pink, burn mustard, bronze and tinted blues to highlight a key 2017/18 colour story for Autumn Winter Womenswear. Shape and form for this day- and eveningwear collection are inspired by structured draping with tailored finishes.

C O N C E P T P A G E

Key theme to Autumn Eclosion A/W 17/18 looks at elements of nature and culture that bind together to form new ideas. The acculturation of design and embellishment elements taken from traditional African cultural practices and the migrating death-head hawkmoth fuses with contemporary tailored daywear and eveningwear silhouettes.

R E S E A R C H : N A T U R E

Reflecting on architecture and interior construction to deal with creating space and volume to silhouettes by looking at work by Greg Lynn’s FORM who has created complex structures characterised by intricate textures and curves. Draping techniques for creating structured volume are also demonstrated by Junya Watanabe’s designs - the use of ultra-lightweight chintz and concertina pleats by Junya Watanabe is similarly seen in West African clothing including the lappa, Ghanaian smocks, wedding attire and kaftans, ranging from heavily tailored to loose silhouettes. Structured pleating also play a role in the A/W 17/18 womenswear collection with work by Issey Miyake and Frank Gehry being influential to the design outcome.

C O L O U R :

Autumn Eclosion explores themes of fusion between two opposing elements and overnight transformation and rebirth. Darker mid-tones have been used with lighter coral, dusky pink and cream tones.

F A B R I C :

Autumn Eclosion inspires lustrous medium-weight silk taffeta with crisp textures allowing smooth surfaces to create bold structures for women’s eveningwear. Dark brushed jacquard fabrics with pastel detail reflecting a decorative optional fabric for an outerwear line up to this A/W 17/18 look. Application of Crepe de Chine allows for a richer layer to garment interiors.

Application: dresses, tops, jackets, skirts.
