EmotionallyIntelligent

Design

Pamela Pavliscak@paminthelab

Long ago, we started

with one emotion

Then we were given

one more

and more

Really it goes back further

Our emotional connection with technology is complicated

We emotionally attach to our devices

Whether we talkto a voice

to the barely visible

So we’ve developed a (mountain) range of ways to

design for emotions

forrester walters von gorp & adams

Often it looks like this

or this

sometimes it turns out like this, or worse

We move people from sad to happy

again and again

PHYSICALfood, shelter, water, clothing, sleep

SAFETY AND SECURITYhealth, employment, social stability

LOVE AND BELONGINGintimacy, family, friendship, connection

SELF-ESTEEMconfidence, achievement, respect

SELF-ACTUALIZATIONpurpose, potential,

acceptance, morality

but it feels

too flat

The role of technology in our lives is bigger

Design needs to go bigger

BASICSfunctional, easy to use, reliable

TRUSTprivacy, transparency, control, governance, access

CONNECTIONintimacy, family, friendship, community, participation

IDENTITYconfidence, achievement, respect

MEANINGpurpose, potential,

emotional intelligence

ADAPT

Continue to evolve as the emotional

Translate emotion in context to design

• What memories are already present?

• How can we foster recall?

• How can people be creative collaborators?

INVITE PARTICIPATION

INVOLVE SENSES

• Is there a place for gratitude in the experience?

• How can we cultivate it?

• What are the most intense moments, positive or negative?

• How can we participate in these moments, if it’s appropriate?

• Where can we build in moments to pause or reflect?

• What other ways could we encourage savoring?

• How can we enrich the experience with all the senses?

• What senses could be evoked?

Together we can create a future of

emotionally intelligent design
