POSTER what is it?!

POSTER?

At First It’s A Very Effective

A poster is a piece of printed paper designed to be attached to a wall or vertical surface.

Communication Tools

Typically posters include both textual and graphic elements.

Posters may be used for many purposes. They are a frequent tool of advertisers (particularly of events, musicians and films), and other groups trying to

communicate a message. Posters are also used for reproductions of artwork, particularly famous works, and are generally low-cost compared to original artwork.

POSTER?

History of Poster

The modern poster, as we know it, however, dates back to 1870 when the printing industry perfected colour lithography and made

mass production possible.

French historian Max Gallo

OVER 200 YEARS posters have been displayed in public places all over the world.

History of Poster

Jules Chéret (May 31, 1836 – September 23, 1932)

Gradation Color gradation is determined by math! Color gradation is when you have a shading or passing of one tint

or shade of color to another, in very small degrees.

Principles of Design

Principles of Design

Harmony Harmony is achieved in a body of work by using similar elements throughout the work,

harmony gives an uncomplicated look to a piece of artwork or sculpture.

Principles of Design

Dominance

Dominance gives a painting interest, counteracting confusion and monotony. Dominance can be applied to one or more of the elements to give emphasis.

Principles of Design

Balance

Balance in design is similar to balance in physics A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by

a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be)

Types of Balance 1. Symmetrical Balance

2. Asymmetrical Balance

Principles of Design

Unity Relating the design elements to the the idea being expressed in a painting reinforces the

principal of unity.eg. a painting with an active aggressive subject would work better with a dominant oblique direction, course, rough texture, angular lines etc. whereas a quiet

passive subject would benefit from horizontal lines, soft texture and less tonal contrast. Unity in a painting also refers to the visual linking of various elements of the work.

effective posters

Ways to attract people to read text 1. Main headline This will be the largest piece of text and the first to be read. Keep it short and to the point. You should be able to do this in fewer than

7 words. 2. Stand first This is the second piece of information people will read and is used to explain the main headline. It can be longer than the headline and introduces the reader to the subject. Use a smaller point size than for main headlines, but not bigger than for subheads.

Papers thickness call: GSM like: 80gsm, 100gsm, 120gsm, 150gsm, 300gsm, 350gsm

GSM stands for grams per Square Meter and is how the quality of paper is measured. Normal office paper is either 60 or 80

grams - good quality paper would be 100 to 120 grams.

Lamination

What is lamination? Lamination is the process of placing something between layers of plastic and gluing them with heat and/or

pressure. When you look at perhaps some business cards, or some company brochures or profiles, you would normally find the front and back covers laminated. This creates a sort of tear-proof and waterproof

surface. Laminating film encapsulates the item completely by being bonded to both its sides.

Basic Types of Lamination

1. Gloss Lamination 2. Matte Lamination

Poster Design – Basics Tips

Color has been investigated and used for more than 2000 years.

Throughout history, different civilizations have experimented and learned more about color.

We are still learning today about how color affects us and its importance in our lives.

COLOR Fundamental of

Primary colors

RED Yellow BLUE

Secondary colours

If you mix equal amounts of the primary colours, you get the Secondary colours - Purple, Green and Orange. Red + Yellow = Orange, Red + Blue = Purple, Blue + Yellow = Green
