Microbes in the Built Environment:Why Care?

• The BE is a large part of our niche• Buildings, planes, cars, etc.

• The BE can be considered a model system for studying microbial ecology and diversity• defined components• controllable inputs and outputs• many replicates possible

• Microbes in the BE likely influence• Human health• Human microbiome• BE ecology

Tuesday, June 26, 12

History

• Interest in microbes in the built environment is nothing new

• Most focus historically has been:• on pathogens • done using culturing

• New approaches possible• culture independent (e.g., DNA

sequencing)• rapid decreases in cost / difficulty• also applies to culture-based studies

Tuesday, June 26, 12

But ...

Tuesday, June 26, 12

But ...

• Culture independent approaches have taken off in many areas of microbial studies• Ocean microbiology• Human microbiome

• Genomics taken off too• Microbes of phylogenetic, economic,

health, ecological interest• But ...

• Not been so fast an uptake in BE studies

Tuesday, June 26, 12

Sloan Program

• Alfred P. Sloan Foundation funded a few “pilot” studies in microbiology of the built environment

• Launched larger program a few years ago with calls for proposals in multiple areas including • Database/informatics• Center• Network
