• Known as “The Projects” or “The Jets”• Originally built to house poor, working class

immigrants and African Americans• The first wave of transitional living was in 1938, which

included: Jane Addams House, Julia C. Lathrop Homes, Ida B. Wells Homes, and Trumbull Park Homes

• The second and third wave came in the 1940’s 50’s and 60’s, which included: Grace Abbott Homes, Stateway Gardens, Henry Horner Homes, Robert Taylor Homes, Lowden Homes, and Cabrini Green

THE DOWNFALL

The Downfall of Public Housing

• In the late 1960’s the once “respected” public housing projects fell short of their intentional purpose

• The rate of poverty, drug, crime, and violence sky rocketed.

• With wealthy developers working with the city of Chicago, the once inevitable destruction of these powerful projects had come true to many of its’ residents.
