A commitment to sustainable architecture has been

a part of our practice for over three decades. We

develop landscape/site and building designs that

harmonize with the overall goals of our clients

while maximizing the beauty of the project sites.

Missouri Conference of the United Methodist ChurchColumbia, Missouri

PWA developed a functional, energy-efficient and environmentally

sensitive design for this 16,000 square foot offi ce building located in the

sensitive Hinkson Creek watershed.

Conservation Campus Nature CenterCape Girardeau, Missouri

The 20,000 square foot facility, completed in May of 2005,

includes indoor and outdoor interactive exhibits, outdoor

learning stations, gardens and landscaping, discovery

trails, wildlife viewing areas, a conservation resource

room and access to potential mobile conservation units

Remington Nature Center, St. Joseph, Missouri

The “crown jewel” of St. Joseph’s riverfront development includes approximately 5,000

square feet of exhibit space, an auditorium, classrooms, an aquarium, cafe, offi ces, and

outdoor viewing areas.

From the beginning the team sought to develop a landscape/

site and building design that would harmonize with the overall

goals of the project and maximize the natural beauty of the

project site.

Working closely with the City of St. Joseph, the architects

found ways to reduce energy loads, conserve water,

minimize waste, and promote the health and satisfaction

of the users and visitors of the facility.

While providing the site with a pleasant, more natural environment, the landscaping and rain gardens help fi lter contaminants and

pollutants before they enter the storm water system. Primarily native plants were used for landscape, with some non-native plants

for late fall and winter color.

Eco Schoolhouse, Columbia, Missouri

The project’s sustainable focus prompted the school’s principal and teachers to integrate sustainability into the

school curriculum and parents to donate time and materials to expand the garden. Developing a tangible example

of sustainable design for use by school-aged children and the community allowed the team to pursue broad fund-

raising and promotional opportunities.

Thomas Jeff erson Agricultural Institute PlanningColumbia, Missouri

The Thomas Jeff erson Agricultural Institute is a multi-stage project that

combines an administrative building for the Jeff erson Institute staff and a

Visitors Center dedicated to education and exhibition of farming practices.

Department of Conservation Regional Offi ce, Columbia, Missouri

This new 12,789 sq. ft. facility will have sustainable features including a geothermal heating and cooling system. Rain gardens and

examples of urban conservation practices will be incorporated outside of the building.
