Who is ZCSD?

The Zululand Centre for Sustainable Development is:

A local NGO ( Section 21 company, not for profit) We find problems and generate creative solutions. Specialise in community development, training ,

mentoring, fund raising and business plan development.

Have demonstration facility at the old Empangeni Water Works on the banks of Lake Nsese.

What is an Agri-Village?

A Co-operative with a difference (36 families and 220 beneficiaries)

An Agricultural Community, the members of which each have equal shares in the village and it’s

activities. Each family has:-

a one hectare plot for homestead food sovereignty. a five hectare share in the village commercial agricultural

system. A village that handles it’s own processing and value adding A village that creates it’s own jobs A village with it’s own school, crèche, social services, church

and training centre. A village owned and run by it’s people

Homestead

Each family has a house on a one Ha plot

This has been proved to be sufficient to provide for their food needs with a surplus.

House

Government grant house of 32 m2Solar power and hot waterWater harvesting tank for drinking waterToilet and shower

Livestock

Each family plot will include an area for all their livestock

The manure can be used for fertiliser in the gardens

Excess animal products could be sold to supplement the family income

Permaculture Gardens

Permaculture methods have proven to give the bests results for homestead food sovereignty Training in the best sustainable methods will be provided

Commercial Agriculture Zone

Each family owns a five hectare share in the Commercial Agriculture zone.

The Multi-Purpose Centre comprises of the following facilities:-

Primary Industry

Each village has one primary value adding industry, such as:-

Organic sugar millBiomass power plantEssential oils stillAbattoirComposting plantVegetable pack houseFood processing

Micro Industries / SMME’s

Each village has 10 micro industries, such as:-

Paper makingWelding servicesMaize millCarpentry shopBakeryWeavingCraft centreCar repairsScreen printing

Education

Each village has a crèche, primary and secondary education facilities

Creche

Each village has a crèche and day-care centre for working mothers

Primary School

Each primary school has three classrooms and an ablution facility with a recreation area for motor sensory development

Ablution Facilities

An ablution facility will serve industry, schools and sporting activities

Sanitation Zone

Each village has a facility for washing clothes as well as an area to handle and to recycle general household waste

Enviro-Laundry

This facility connects the washing of clothes to an environmentally sound waste water system

Recycling Centre

This facility caters for the handling of waste in a environmentally friendly way through recycling
