ASHCAN SCHOOL

Following an Impressive training in Paris, Robert Henri returned to Philadelphia completing another year of study at the PAFA. He taught at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, and established the Charcoal Club, later known as the “Philadelphia Four.” Others considered in the Ashcan school were: Alfred Maurer, George Wesley Bellows, Edward Hopper, and Guy Pène Du Bois

Among the Charcoal Club, (aka Philadelphia Four), Robert Henri, Arthur B. Davies, Maurice Prendergast, Ernest Lawson, William Glackens, Everett Shinn, John French Sloan, and George Luks also became known as “The Eight”.

The Ashcan school was formed from the unified depiction of everyday life of poor, urban neighborhoods. “Art cannot be separated from life. It is the expression of the greatest need of which life is capable, and we value art not because of the skilled product, but because of its revelation of a life’s experience.” – Henri
