Tangible Food

Wayne Thiebaud• Created colorful paintings of commonplace things (often

production line objects found in diners and cafeterias):– Pies– Candy– Cakes– Ice cream– Hot dogs– MANY MORE!!!

• Worked at a café in Long Beach California called “Mile High and Red Hot” (Mile High = ice cream, Red Hot = hot dog)

Wayne Thiebaud• Used Heavy Pigment• Exaggerated Colors• Cast Shadows• High Contrast• Apprenticed at the Walt Disney Studio in high school drawing “in-

betweeners” of Goofy, Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket• Worked in the First Motion Picture Unit for the US Army Air Forces

during WWII making propaganda and training films:– Composed entirely of professionals from the film industry– Well known actors often acted in the films, like Clark Gable (Gone With The

Wind), William Holden (the original Casino Royale), and Ronald Reagan)– These were equally informative AND entertaining!

Wayne Thiebaud

• Did not like to be identified as a Pop Artist • He didn’t like Andy Warhol’s flat and

mechanical prints• He identified himself as “just an old-fashioned

painter”
