HistoryCaprivi was named after German Chancellor Leo

von Caprivi (in office 1890–1894), who negotiated

the acquisition of the land in an 1890 exchange

with the United Kingdom.

The Caprivi Strip is of politico-strategic military

importance. During the Rhodesian Bush War

(1970–1979), African National Congress

operations against the South African government

(1965–1994) and the Angolan Civil War (1975–

2002), the Strip saw continual military action and

multiple incursions by various armed forces

using the Strip as a corridor to access other

territories.

Caprivi national parks

There are five protected

areas within the Caprivi

Strip.

All of them boast of

extensive wildlife, from big

game to water-loving

species – like hippo,

crocodile, sable,

waterbuck, reedbuck and

buffalo – which are largely

absent from the rest of

Popa fallsPopa Falls are one of the highlights of the

western Caprivi.

They are actually rapids rather than

waterfalls. Here the Okavango River

breaks through a 4 metre high rockreef in

its riverbed, which stretches over more

than a kilometre in width.

The rapids are particularly impressive in

the dry season at lower water levels.

The Popa Falls are surrounded by

enchantingly beautiful nature. Restcamps

are positioned at the western and the

eastern banks of the Okavango.

Bwabwata National Park

Bwabwata National Park (frequently

pronounced 'Babatwa') covers a large

chunk of the Caprivi Strip. This is a

largely undeveloped park which,

whilst home to much wildlife, has few

facilities and little in the way of

marked game-viewing side roads.

It is bounded by the Okavango

River to the west and the Kwando

Riverto the east. Angola lies to the

north and Botswana to the south.

Mudumu National Park

The more northerly of Eastern

Caprivi's two reserves, Mudumu,

covers 850km² of riverine forest south

of Kongola. Bordered by the Kwando

River on the west, the reserve has

good populations of a large variety of

animals.

Mudumu is notable for its buffalo

(otherwise uncommon in Namibia),

roan and sable and often large herds

of elephant.
