The Washington Monument was built to honor the first President of the United States of America George Washington. The Washington Monument dominates the Capital City skyline as a symbolic tribute to George Washington's military leadership during the American Revolution.

World's tallest stone structure

• The Monument is the world's tallest stone structure as well as the world's tallest obelisk. This 555 foot tall obelisk is the tallest building in the District of Columbia and by law no other building in D.C. is allowed to be taller.

• The marble, granite and bluestone gneiss are used for the memorial. There are 193 memorial stones presented by individuals, societies, cities, states and nations of the world inserted into the interior walls of the obelis

• Inside the Washington Monument are an elevator and an 897-step stairway. There is an observation deck at 500 feet. At the top of the monument there is a nine-inch tall aluminum pyramid. Lightning rods at the top protect the monument from lightning strikes. The giant obelisk contains 36,491 blocks and weighs 90,854 tons.

• An elevator takes visitors to the top to see a spectacular view of Washington, DC including unique perspectives of the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, and the Capitol Building.

• Pierre Charles L'Enfant the architect who designed Washington, D.C. planned in 1783 to have a prominent statue honoring George Washington near the White House and Capitol.

• There is a Sylvan Theater an outdoor amphitheater located near the base of the Washington Monument, is a popular venue for a wide range of events including free concerts and lives theatrical performances, commemorative ceremonies, rallies and protests.
