Visiting Borobudur
The definition of Borobudur is a combination of two words: BARA and
BUDUR. Bara is derived from the Sanskrit word VIHARA, meaning a complex of
temples, monastery or dormitory. BUDUR is derived from the Balinese BIDUHUR,
meaning ‘high’.
The Borobudur complex is located in Central Java, Indonesia, 42km outside of
Yogyakarta.
Borobudur is in close proximity to Candi Prambanan, one of the world’s largest Hindu
temples, which indicates that the two religions corresponded in harmony with each other.
HISTORY:
Borobudur was built in the 9th century under the Mahayana Empire
It was abandoned for many centuries, until its re-discovery in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, also known as the founder of modern Singapore
The abandonment was probably due to Java’s conversion to Islam in the 14th century
Borobudur’s largest restoration project was between 1975 and 1982,
funded by UNESCO
As of 1991 Borobudur is officially listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site
As of 2012 it is listed as the world’s single largest Buddhist
site
Borobudur is Indonesia’s single most visited tourist spot
DESIGN:
The monument base is approx. 120m x 120m and its height is about 35 m
