2.2 Photo exhibition

Located in B1 – Art Gallery of NCKU library, our gallery offered a special area about

Vietnam - country and people. Our gallery was composed of three parts: Exhibition, art displays

and documentary films.

The photo exhibition and art displays focused on the following subjects:

- Activities, cultural festivals

- Vietnamese people’s studying, working, and daily lives

- Vietnamese famous landscapes

Using the special materials in the Vietnamese old art, the photo exhibition brought a new

atmosphere which attracted the attention of the Taiwanese and foreign visitors. Folk painting, oil

painting and silk painting are three main kinds of painting which we presented in this

Vietnamese gallery. Moreover, by using various materials like wood, aluminum, Bat Trang

potteries, this different area displaying the Vietnamese objects created a good impression to the

visitors.

We also presented the series of documentary films about Vietnamese historical sites and

events in the past, the change of Vietnamese traditional woman long dress “Ao Dai” as well as

the information about Vietnamese contemporary political, economic, cultural, and social

situations. Each day, we welcomed about 100 people from different countries to visit our

exhibition. Through this, we hope you all have more information about Vietnam.

8

2.3 Vietnamese Films

In this Vietnam Cultural Week, we offered two Vietnamese films with Chinese and English

subtitles: The White Silk Dress and Three Seasons. These two films have been discovered two

different aspects and situations. “The White Silk Dress” used the war situation to compliment the

traditional long dress of Vietnamese woman, whereas “Three Seasons” was based on the modern

society to describe three different destinies. The content and the talent of actors and actresses in

these two films touched deeply the heart of both Taiwanese and international audiences. We felt

happy about the discussion and the confidence between MC and audiences in the exchange part

and to be moved to tears when seeing them crying as we knew that they were living with the

destinies of characters in the films.

Here are the content of these two films:

2.3.1 The White Silk Dress (2006)

Director: Luu Huynh

Writer: Luu Huynh

Genre: Drama

Vietnamese film “Ao Lua Ha Dong” (The White Silk Dress), directed by Luu Huynh is to

complete documents for a 2008 Oscar in the best foreign language film category.

The film tells the story of the misfortunes of a Vietnamese couple, Dan and her humpbacked

husband, and their attempt to hold on to a precious Ha Dong silk dress that belonged to Dan’s

mother in law. The movie also highlights the beauty of the traditional "Ao Dai" (Vietnamese

long dress) to the audience.

9

The film has won many international awards including prizes at the Busan International Film

Festival in October 2006, and the Fukuoka International Film Festival in Japan in 2007. Actress

Truong Ngoc Anh and actor Quoc Khanh contributed a lot to the success of the film by putting in

excellent performances.

2.3.2 Three Seasons (1999)

Director: Tony Bui

Writers: Timothy Linh Bui (story)

Genre: Drama

The film “Three Seasons”, directed by Tony Bui, is the only American film made entirely in

Vietnam, won several prizes at the international Sundance Film Festival

“Three Seasons” tells three tangentially linked stories. First is the tale of Kien An (Ngoc

Hiep Nguyen), a lovely young woman who works picking lotus blossoms at a sanitarium. She

becomes a scribe for its mysterious proprietor, Teacher Dao (Manh Cuong Tran), a leper who

hides himself away in shame but whose soul is full of beautiful poetry. Then there is Hai (Don

Duong), a gentle "cyclo" (bicycle rickshaw) driver who falls in love with Lan (Zoe Bui), an

alluring, feisty prostitute who he saw coming and going from the big tourist hotels. Last, there is

James Hager (Keitel), an ex-Marine who fought in the war and has returned to find the daughter

he fathered many years before. There is also a charming plot about Woody (Huu Duoc Nguyen),

a little street urchin who sells contraband out of a suitcase. The narrative involving Keitel's

character is the least developed in the film, and seems to be almost an afterthought, but in any

event, truly magnificent visuals and a delicate lyricism make Three Seasons a haunting,

bittersweet film portrait of life in contemporary Vietnam. --Laura Mirsky

2.4 Music Performances

It would be shortcomings if Vietnamese cultural life is described without entertainment life.

In order to deliver the whole picture of our culture to all friends in Taiwan, “Vietnam Cultural

Week” included a colorful performance night with support and help from sponsors, professors as

well as friends from various countries.

The performance’s content comprised of Vietnamese and international dances, singing,

instrumental performance, fashion show, and our Vietnamese Students Association’s chorus.

Participants are not only from Vietnam but also from many other countries such as Taiwan,

Indonesia, United States of America, Canada, Bolivia, Philippines, Mongolia, etc... This year, to

promote cultural exchange, we welcomed all performances from different countries, which

decorated Vietnam Cultural Week more colorfully and helped us a chance for mutual

understanding with others. Thus, the audiences could deeply immerse in Vietnamese spirit and

also enjoyed international community.

At 7pm, most of seats in the first stage were fulfilled (about 600 seats). And more and more

people came in after the opening performance.

Opening the performance night was a short video introducing to audiences the NCKU

students, Vietnamese Students Association (VSA) and its activities, the success of “2007

Vietnam Cultural Day” and the presentation of “2008 Vietnam Cultural Week” as well. After,

there were an opening Vietnamese flag dance and the speeches made by the distinguished guests

and the president of VSA, Mr. Pham Viet Cuong.

The first performance, “Cinderella of Today”, which was performed by NCKU student girls

wearing the Vietnamese traditional long dress, brought a young and ebullient atmosphere for that

performance night. Continuing the program was the young and strong dance “Filipino Dance

11

with Vietnamese and Filipino Music” that was excellently performed by IMBA students from

Mongolia, Philippine, Indonesia, Bolivia, America, and Vietnam really warmed up the

conference room. After that, the charm and tender voice of Nguyen Thanh Tu – Vietnamese STU

student with the love song “Proud of You” attracted the audiences. She also contributed

considerably to the last Vietnam Cultural Day taken place in the year 2007. Not finished

surprising with that little pretty girl voice, the audiences were suck in the sweet melody of piano

performed by Nicole Tsai – Taiwanese student (NCKU). The next performance was the

Vietnamese play “Banh Chung Banh Day” by Christian Love Neighbor Community, Tainan,

which is one of the sponsors for our event. The special point was that some characters are

Vietnamese brides in Taiwan, which indicated the role of bridge of this cultural event linking

Taiwanese and Vietnamese cultures. The next was the Bolivian dance familiar with IMBA

students in NCKU. However, this dance was performed by students from three countries,

including: Bolivian, American and Filipino, having a perfect creation in each movement.

Another performance, Pham Ngoc Khanh and Nguyen Hoang Yen – Vietnamese students

(NCKU) performed a duet a Chinese Song Vietnamese Folk Song which was a male’s swear to a

female he loved.

In the middle of the program, Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoang – vice-present of VSA – announced

and awarded the winners of the “Contest of Exploring Vietnamese Culture and Society for

Taiwanese and Foreigners” which aimed to spread Vietnamese culture to Taiwanese and

international friends. Two winners who are knowledgeable about Vietnamese culture are both

Taiwanese.

Following performance was a Vietnamese Folk Song (Tuong Phung Tuong Ngo), performed

by Nguyen Thanh Nam – Vietnamese student (KUAS). This is one kind of music typical to the

North region in Vietnam, especially when the spring comes. Vietnamese dance “Love Proposal”

with the soft and fervid melody which was manifested by the NCKU female students wearing the

Vietnamese clothing “Tu Than”. After that, Luong Thi Bich Thuy – Vietnamese STU student

contributed the Vietnamese 16 chord zither performance, the musical instrument of which is

difficult to control. The next was a Vietnamese song and dance “The Spring Market Day”

performed by Hoang Nhu Quynh from National Yun-lin University of Science and Technology

and Nguyen Cong Hoang from National Cheng Kung University. It is a Vietnamese ethical song

12

of the Northeastern region in Vietnam, which brought a new atmosphere. The song describes a

simple but sincere love of a mountainous couple. Besides, the guitar performance played by

Ezra – Indonesian student (NCKU) made the audiences very surprised as he did play guitar so

well and could sing the Vietnamese song “Nhac Rung” – a famous and popular song

complimenting the Vietnamese soldiers battling for the peace of the country. After that, the

atmosphere of conference hall was warmed up again by a Vietnamese song “Sunlight, Blue Sea

and You”, performed by Nguyen Thi Thu Ngoc – Vietnamese student (NCKU). The strong and

warm voice of that little girl could satisfy all audiences, even the strict ones. Another

performance which contributed by STU students was a Vietnamese dance “The Lantern” with a

soft and flexible movement. And the last performance was a fashion show of Vietnamese

traditional male and female dresses performed by NCKU students, including Taiwanese,

American, Filipino, Taiwanese and Vietnamese, and so on. Finally, all students, hand in hand,

sang loudly together a Vietnamese song “For the World of Tomorrow”, which manifested the

friendship between Vietnam and international friends.

The performance night finished with the great success was really a meaningful award for us.

We hope that this performance night might make Taiwanese and international people have more

understanding about Vietnamese culture and people as well as strengthen the solidarity and

friendship between Vietnam and international friend countries.

2.5 Food Festival

Coming to our food festival, you come to our home

In this festival, we introduced some Vietnamese food specialties. One of them, called NEM,

would certainly be the most special one. NEM, CHA GIO or SPRING ROLL are different names

of the most popular and traditional dish which Vietnamese people, especially those living abroad

13

might think of not only as a normal food, but also something reminding of their mother land. It is

called NEM in the North of Vietnam, CHA GIO in the South of Vietnam, and SPRING ROLL in

English. Now, just the word NEM only can make lots of people in the world when hearing and

imaging of it, feel tons of mouth water running in their throats.

A hot, brown, newly fried roll which is made of a soft sheet of rice rolling around fresh meat,

herbs, vegetables and some national secret ingredients is producing its magic fragrance. The

charming colors of flowers, the delicious fragrance of NEM and the loving voices bringing warm

wishes to each other go along with each family member in the New Year or other festivals.

More than 500 rations were prepared. W do hope to bring the visitors not only a Vietnamese

traditional food but also a warm, happy and loving family atmosphere.
