In the beginning the castle of the Petit Trianon was built (1768) for the marquise de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV. But she died before the end of the works and was replaced by Madame Du Barry, who succeeded as favourite until the death of the king Louis XV in 1774. The castle was built in a Neo-Greek style by the architect Angel-Jacques Gabriel; it is a masterpiece which breaks with the rococo style. However today the Petit Trianon is closely associated with the person of queen Marie-Antoinette. She received the property from her husband king Louis XVI.She made it her intimate refuge far from the protocol and the pageantry of the court of Versailles. She had the Petit Trianon refurnished, redecorated and she refitted the gardens

Only her friends were invited. The excluded and jealous French nobility took umbrage at the Petit Trianon and called it “Small Vienna”. Marie-Antoinette did not realize that her retirement and the committed expenses were going to crystallize all criticisms against her palace. While isolating herself from the French nobility the Queen would find herself without her natural supports when the revolution burst out

Madame Lebrun, though only twenty-four, the same age as Marie-Antoinette, was already an established portraitist. She was the daughter of a renowned artist, Louis Vigée, and had been painting aristocratic portraits since her teenage years. She had enjoyed the patronage of the Duchesse d’Orléans, a member of the royal family, who introduced her to the Queen. The latter had long expressed her frustration at being unable to find any painter who could capture her likeness. She was immediately delighted by the first portrait Louise-Elisabeth painted of her

The Guards' Room is located across the hall from the Billiard Room and is connected to a

passage from where the guards could keep an eye on who came and went to Petit Trianon.

The Guards’ RoomWhen the guards occupied the room (which was whenever Marie Antoinette visited) the room would be filled with beds and mattresses along with chairs and tables.

The Petit Trianon and its park are indissociably linked to the memory of Queen Marie-Antoinette. She is the only queen to have imposed her personal taste on Versailles. Sweeping away the old court and its traditions, she insisted on living as she wished.

In her Trianon domain, which Louis XVI gave her in 1774, she found the heaven of privacy that enabled her to escape from the rigors of court etiquette. Nobody could come there without her invitation
