Piazza Navona hosts, by tradition, the biggest “Christmas “ market in Rome, where it is possible to find all kind of materials and
decorations for cribs and Christmas , the Crib and present.
This is my first Christmas outside my family which, over the years, has lost
peace and love. The Angel is my Guardian Angel,
whom I felt close at hand, as long as my Faith lasted.
The Crib smelling with moss and cork, which we used to pick in woods at the beginning of
December. My father used to make cribs as large as a half a room, each year a different one. The sky made of a blue paper spread with little stars, not painted but really shining! The small houses climbing up on mountains of straw-paper, with trembling little lights inside.
With flour standing for snow.
.
inizio dicembre. Mio padre faceva presepi grandi mezza
stanza, ogni anno diversi.
Little glass ponds with light blue paper underneath;
and the small fountains with real water where the little chalk sheep
went to water! And the Grott full of light, with Mary and Joseph kneeling before a small
heap of empty straw …
candele
On Christmas Eve the long, long tables at grandparents’… Uncles,
aunts and cousins … All young, all happy and full of love for each
other! And, at midnight, the youngest in the family would lay
down the Baby on the straw, while everybody else
Christmas, a magic Night for me, since always and forever! A Night when Heaven joins the Earth! The Star lights up in all its
splendour. The Angels give the Happy News and the shepherds hasten …Even animals
are gifted with speech!
No, non è romanticume!
E’ bellissimo rifugiarsi
nello spicchio di cuore bambino, ogni tanto! Guai per
chi quello spicchio lo ha chiuso!
My Angel, please, don’t smile at all these romantics of mine!
Little glass ponds with light blue paper underneath; and the small fountains with real water where the little chalk
sheep went to water! And the Grott full of light, with Mary and Joseph kneeling before a small heap of empty straw …
No, Angelo.
No, my Angel. I don’t want the sisters of the boarding-house to look at me
as one of the three- four unlucky girls who stay there because they
have no other place to go, not even at Christmas!
Meraviglie!. La
gente entra ed esce piena di pacchetti!
! In the afternoon of the 24th I take my chance and go out roaming in the
hyperconsumeristic city of a few decades ago…
How many hangings, how much light! Shop-windows as entries to Wonderland!
People going in and out, laden with packages! Some on their own, others in
small groups …
Quelq’un seul, plusieurs en groupe. Ils bavardent,
ils rient…Moi je marche, je marche, je marche.. Lentement les
rues se vident. Les magasins ferment. Aprées tant de bruit, le silence!
Chi solo, molti a gruppetti.. Chiacchierano, ridono…
Pian piano le strade si spopolano. I negozi chiudono- Dopo tanto vociare,
silenzio assoluto!
Some on their own, others in small groups … They are chatting,
laughing Pian slowly the roads are become
depopulated. The stores close After much vociare, Hush absolute!
-
Thousands of lighted windows … Restaurants filled with people who don’t want or cannot
celebrate at home
-
Quasi niente macchine.
Gradually, streets become empty. Shops close. After so much bawling,
an absolute quiet!
Piazza Navona.. Il bar
accanto alla chiesa è aperto. Ci sono persone.. Entro.. Nemmeno
so perché.Un ragazzo mi guarda ed esclama: -
“Che viso d’angelo!”-
I walk, walk, walk …
Pasquino, Square where the buzzing of Navona Square comes…
The bar near the church is open There are people inside I go in: I don’t
even know why A boy looks at me and and cries out:
“What an angel face!”
visage d’ange”!
I look at him and do not reply. But he is nice, gentle, sensitive … He uses the right words, in order not to look like a “pappagallo”. “Would you like to go around Rome?” For sure he is alone too! It is late evening. And I get
in the car of a perfect stranger!
Cosa ci siam detti, cosa ci siam raccontati fin quasi all’alba? Non ricordo. . Ricordo solo che stavo benissimo..
Le luci, i monumenti illuminati.. La gente che va a Messa.. E poi che
esce dalla Messa..
What did we tell each other until dawn? I don’t remember, I only remember I
was feeling very well …The lights, the lighted monuments … People going to Mass … and leaving
Mass
.. Il vociare e lo scintillio delle bancarella
di Piazza Navona.. Il Gianicolo, il Pincio, Piazza del Popolo…
Parliamo, parliamo.. Ridiamo, ridiamo..
Angelo, non ti vedo né ti sento
Sei sempre tu, travestito, in questa Notte strana?
The bawling and sparkilng o Piazza Navona stalls … The Gianicolo, Pincio
Piazza del Popolo … We talk, talk … laugh, laugh My Angel, I don’t see you nor feel you …
Is it still you, disguised, in this funny night?
Gli dico no.
It’s almost dawn, when he takes me back to the
boarding-house … Asks me to see me again … I don’t want
to waste the Magic of this Night with reality!
passeggia.. Tanti bambini eccitatissmi!
Christmas Day! A sandwhich on a bench
at Piazza Navona. People smiling, strolling … Many
children, extremely excited!
Jour de Noel! Un sandwich sur un banc de Piazza
Navona. Les gent sourient et se promenent.. Beaucoup
Piangi, adesso?
No no, Angelo mio.. Non piango, sai?
Non Piango!Bag-pipes! My baby heart leaps … II throw out my sandwhich into a basket.
What are you doing, are you crying, now?
No, no, my Angel … I am not crying, you know? Not crying!
Les cornemuses! Mon coeur d’enfant sursaute.. Je jette le sandwich dans la corbeille
« Que fais-tu? Tu pleur maintenant? « « Non, mon Ange,..je ne pleur pas,
non je ne pleur pas! »
La zampogne..
Angelo.. Il regalo più bello per me,
in questo momento? Una spalla
sulla quale poggiare un attimo la testa.. Un attimo soltanto! Ho appena compiuto diciotto anni!
My Angel ... The most beautiful gift for me, at this moment?
A shoulder on which to rest my head for a while … Just for a
while!I’am 18 years old!
Les cornemuses…
Ange..
seulement…
