PREFACEIn prevailing circumstances, the business environment surround-ing the aviation and airport industries is changing rapidly. In view of the increased global competition between airports, Angkasa Pura Airports must strengthen and fortify its functions to establish its position as a key domestic and international hub. We are currently managing 13 airports throughout central and eastern Indonesia, one of the main airports is Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport. In aggregate, our total number of customers for 2012 reached 65.5 million passengers, an increase of 13.8% compared to the previ-ous year.

With a view of competing with other major airports in Asia to attract services and recognizing the fact that the passengers favorite airports are ultimately the airlines choice. Angkasa Pura Airports will aim to meet the distinctively polarized and diverse needs of the aviation market.

Terminal building capacity at Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport is undergoing expansion now and we will seek to give a fresh new look to our commercial facilities by attracting new tenants and improving the environment. This will be done by taking into account the characteristics and shop composition of our existing commercial facilities.

The construction of the new Ngurah Rai Bali International terminal building will increase the airports capacity by up to 25 million passengers a year. This Ngurah Rai project is targeted to be operational by October 2013, by expanding its capacity from 80.000m2 to 190.000m2. As this airport facilitaties the cross-border flow of goods and people, we will strive to stay abreast with the growth in aviation demand and to provide high standards of safety and service. We also pursue new business opportunities on the core of our existing business to achieve corporate growth.

Angkasa Pura Airports are committed to ensuring safe and functional airport operations. We will continue to strive and become an attractive airport with the advantages of being trusted and preferred by travelers, airlines, other customers using our airport or with whom we work with.

Angkasa Pura Airports supports Travelling Bali.

Bali – The Place With Highest Temple Density In The World

Without a doubt, there is no other place in the world with a temple density higher than the one in Bali. Even for Balinese it is partially very hard to figure out the history or meaning of a special temple as we have many myths and stories be-hind them, from time to time 3 and more. This has something to do with the fact that different villages have shared bigger temples and every village has developed over a longer period of time an own story.

A legend about Gunung Kawi for example, a tem-ple containing different tombs which are carved into the mountain and reminding more to a South American Maya Temple located in an undiscov-ered lush green jungle area, then a Balinese tradi-tion temple, tells it was carved from a giant within one night. Another interesting story we hear about Lempuyang temple. It is not documented when Lempuyang Temple was exactly built but legends say that when mother earth was only 70 years old, the island of Bali was unstable and earthquakes happened daily.

The god Pacupati, who resides in Mount Sumeru saw this condition and asked his three children to stabilize Bali. He sent Hyang Gni Jaya, Hyang Pu-tra Jaya and Dewi Danu to Bali to reside in three different places; Dewi Danu on Mount Batur, Hy-

ang Putra Jaya on Mount Agung, and Hyang Gni Jaya in Lempuyang Luhur Temple. This legend bears a resemblance to the one we know from Mount Batur. = already corrected!!! Or the story about Batukaru Temple. A Balinese King named Panji Sakit, who wanted to expand his empire, attacked Batukaru. For some reason Panji Sakit also wanted to damage Batukaru Temple.

As soon as he had started to damage the temple, the King and his soldiers were attacked by thou-sands and thousands of bees and their mission failed. Serious documentations about temples can be found in “Lontars”, which are palm leaf manuscripts in Asia. The oldest existing ones date back to 500 BC, the oldest ones in Bali, shown at

@ Uluwatu Temple

@ Tanah Lot Temple

32

Page 33: travelling BALI Vol. VII

Lontar Museum Gedong Kirtya, are… years old. Gedong Kirtya is the only museum in the world which shows a Lontar collection. It is interesting to hear that some names are always mentioned in the Lontars when it comes up to temples. Regard-ing to these old manuscripts Dang Hyang Nirartha is one of them. Dang Hyang Nirartha was a chief counselor of a Javanese King. He felt in Love with one of the patrons wife and had to leave Java in 1537.

After arriving in Bali he was the founder of the three temple system in Bali. Every village still follows this philosophy and the temple for Brahma (the god of creation) is facing the mountain, the Vishnu temple (the maintainer and protector) is based in the mid-dle of the village and for Shiva (the destroyer) the temple is facing the ocean.

Also the Lontars tell about Mpu Kuturan, a travel-ling priest. Batukaru Temple, the Shrines at Ulu-

watu temple or Bat cave temple are attributed to him. If you are now interest in temples and a Bali Newbi, we highly recommend to see Bratan Temple. It is located on the shores of Bratan lake about 1240 meters above the sea level. The cli-mate there is already completely different and the area invites you for a stroll or some watersports. A perfect place to go for everybody. Monkey Lov-ers should not miss to see Uluwatu temple, a cliff edged temple with plenty of wildlife monkeys. If you are travelling with kids, definitely go there.

A wide range of temples and stories can be found on: www.travellingbali.com

To all those who like to explore Bali’s temples on there own it is highly recommended to download our Application for every device which includes a GPS navigation to all main attractions.

Every fast developing tourist destination in the world has two sides to its blades.

The first area, and surely the most popular one, is known asa mass tourism place such as Kuta or Seminyak. Everyone who has stayed in Bali will have experienced at least one of these areasand seen the Bali Lifestyle in that region.

On the other hand what about the other side of the Keris’s blade? Has everyone that has stayed in Kuta, made a trip to Bali’s northern part to see the National park or have they been to Singaraja, Lovina or Candi Dasa?

Unfortunately it is sad but true that plenty of the tourists coming to the island of the gods only see it as a low cost island with great opportunities for food and spa treatments.

The following article is aimed at all those people whoso farhaven’t heard or have ignored Bali’s other side, the wonderful culture, the outstanding fauna and flora and the opportunity to chill out in a segregated area. It is directed at all those who are looking for a chance to take great walks, hikes or cycling tours in a cool, fresh area that is 1,500me-ters or moreabove sea level in an outstanding mountainous area. It has been written for all those who are looking for an opportunity to see wild dolphins, buffalo races, deer or fantastic marina wildlife in some of the great snorkeling areas that are just waiting to be explored.

Last but by no means least this article is ad-

dressed to all those people who want to cross the Kuta or Seminyak boarder and increase their knowledge by experiencing the second face of Bali (side or the other side of the Keris), the tra-ditional and original face (side)! We hope you are one of these people.

In the regency of Karangasem in the north west of Bali, lies Candi Dasa, it’s a great place to stay overnight and the perfect placetostart explora-tions of the many cultural highlights which are nestled around this area. In addition to this, Candi Dasa has some extremely charming restaurants, such as the “Lotus Sea view Restaurant”, which offers a wonderful ocean view and the perfect place to have Dinner. Close to Candi Dasa, nes-tled in the hills around this area, you can find Ten-ganan village.

The traditions and practices of this village may sound very strange to you but isn’t it worth see-ing a village where only the inhabitants are allowed to marry each other andvisitors of the village are prohibited from staying overnight?

The Taman Ujung Water palace, Winner of tri-padvisor’s “Travellers’ Choice Award 2013”, Tirta Gangga the former Royal Palace of Krangasem, rated on tripadvisor 4.5/5 and Lempuyang Temple one of Bali’s 9 key directional temples that faces a variety of lakes, mountains and oceans are also located close to Candi Dasa and should not be missed during your trip. Even if youhave already booked your hotel in Bali, it is worth taking a driver and staying overnight in Candi Dasa, a wonderful place located on the northeast coast of Bali.

Another place which is highly recommended for an overnight stay is Lovina. The name of this neat city is derived from the word ‘lovely’ in Indonesian, which already speaks for itself. Lovina is very pop-ular for dolphin watching which usually starts at 6 o’clock in the morning. For this reason alone an overnight stay in Lovina is already highly recom-mended. The Northern area is also very popular for its unique hot springs. The Banjar Hot Spring for example is operated professionally, provides lockers and changing rooms and is great fun to spend some time in the lovely warm water, which is roughly 38 degrees. This environment is very family friendly and a great day out if you are travel-ling with kids. In addition to this, all the hot springs have, due to the sulfurous water, a healing charac-

ter. Furthermore, plenty of wonderful waterfalls, such as the Gitgit waterfall, with their fresh water poolsgive you the opportunity to take a dip and cool down whilst on your day trip. The following Tour with an overnight stay away from the hus-tle and bustle in the south, combines as does the previous recommendation, great things to see in Bali with a family friendly environment, the follow-ing tour is highly recommended.

Mother Temple, also named Besakih Temple or Pura Besakih Bali, is located in the village of Be-sakih (Rendang Sub-district, Karangasem) right at the foot of Mount Agung, in the eastern part of Bali.

As its name already states, it is the mother of all temples and not just one of Bali’s most impor-tant temples; it is the most important one in Bali! Besakih Temple is located about 1,000 meters above sea level and finally it is the highest sub-stantial public temple complex.

Besakih Temple dates back to about the 10th century (the same age as Tirta Empul Temple) and is actually a complex consisting of about 30 singular temples, with hundreds of shrines, dedi-cated to the helpers of the gods.

When you have finally reached Pura Penataran Agung Besakih, the highest temple of the Mother Temple complex, you will be rewarded with un-imaginable views and a fabulous, spiritual feeling.

Obviously, the most marvellous things in Bali also have a reverse side to the coin. As the Mother Temple is a very popular tourist place, you will be asked for money at every single corner. A guide offers his knowledge here, a seller his products there and obviously you have to pay for the en-

trance as well. Additionally you will probably get forced to buy a Sarong for 50 USD which is 3-4 times of the real value.

Before you enter the temple complex, Besakih Temple can easily become annoying, especially if you can’t handle pushy people. As Besakih tem-ple plays such a big role in Balinese tradition and it is a tremendous and imposing complex it is there-fore hard to say:

“If you can’t handle these situations, stay away from Pura Besakih and see other major temples on Bali such as Pura Luhur Uluwatu (Uluwatu Temple) or Tirta Empul Temple (Pura Tirta Empul) just to name a few” but unfortunately this is a fact. Although for those who don’t mind at all and make this tour to Bali’s holiest temple will explore a terrific complex with stunning views from the top level!

Balangan Beach is located in the Bukit, in the south west of Bali. This place is a real hidden gem and “The Golden Sand Area” is well worth a visit. Situated under a massive cliff, Balangan Beach is not easy to find but precisely for this reason this wonderful beauty offers nearly full privacy. Apart from some surfers who enjoy the fantastic waves in this area you will only meet some other tourists who found this place by coincidence.

A public parking place on top of the cliff is pro-vided and the access to Balangan Beach is very easy, you just have to handle the stairs down the cliff to the beach. Because of the massive waves, Balangan Beach is not highly recommended for swimming but offers another opportunity which is rare to find somewhere else in Bali, a romantic cliff edge wedding with stunning sunset views!

In case you plan to get married, Balangan Cliff will make the most important day in your life simply unforgettable. Wedding agents in Bali offer cer-emonies in every price class. Starting from around 2,000 USD and the sky is the limit. In case you haven’t booked your hotel yet, basic accommo-dation around Balangan Beach is provided for as little as 20 USD.

The rooms are obviously not equipped with an air conditioner but those who are happy with only a

fan can make staying around Balangan Beach a real bargain. Day Trips to Balangan Beach can be perfectly combined with a visit of Uluwatu Tem-ple (cliff edge temple) which is very popular for its wild monkeys. In case you are travelling with kids it has to be mentioned that the cliff around Ulu-watu Temple is partially unsecured. On the way back it is highly recommended to make a stop in Jimbaran Bay for a seafood dinner.

The local warungs (restaurants), nestled in be-tween the area of Four Seasons and Interconti Hotel, offer real value for money. A 1.5 Kilo Red Snapper, coming with rice, soup, vegetables and different sauces only adds up to about 10 USD and it is enough for two.

In addition to this, Jimbaran Bay is a very romantic place and offers a great sunset. Be there at the latest around 6.00 pm.

SIGHTSEEING

Banjar Hot Spring

Gitgit Waterfall

Panglipuran Village

Gunung Kawi TempleGunung Kawi Temple (Pura Gunung Kawi) is a very unique Balinese temple complex, carved into the mountain and located on Pakerisan River, close to Tampak Siring village in the regency of Gianyar. Pura Gunung Kawi bears a resemblance to the South American Maya Temples as it is surrounded by a lush green tropical rain forest and situated on a mountain river.

Gitgit Waterfall is located in a plateau, about 300 me-ters above sea level. It is the height of about 40 me-ters, surrounded by tropical trees and a lush green environment. The way to Gitgit Waterfall is paved with lots of stalls and on either side of the path you can find some lush plantations (coffee and cloves). The sellers are not aggressive at all and you can finally enjoy a 15 minute walk without getting hassled by anyone.

Penglipuran Village in the traditional Balinese country-side is located in the Bangli regency, about an hour and 30 minute trip from Kuta. See the original Balinese way of living, visit traditional houses and talk to the locals. To keep this outstanding cultural attraction going, the family agreement is that the oldest family member has to move back to Penglipuran after both parents have passed away. A must see for Culture Lovers!

Banjar Hot Spring Bali is a very peaceful place where plenty of locals come for relaxation as well. The toilets are clean, well maintained and lockers are available. One of the pools can be described as a kid’s pool and if you are travelling with the whole family, you can splash around with your children here. A local Restaurant pro-vides basic food and cold drinks and some smaller sou-venir shops are waiting for you to bargain with them.

SIGHTSEEING

Mount Batur’s original height was about 4,000 meters in prehistoric times. After an enormous eruption noth-ing was left apart from a large caldera which in 2012 became part of the Global Geopark Network by UN-ESCO. The actual height of Mount Batur is 1,717 me-ters. Mount Batur offers a great opportunity to all cy-cling and trekking fanatics. The Sunrise Trekking Tour is highly recommended to all those who are physically fit.

Sukawati Art Market is the biggest local market in Bali to purchase traditional handicrafts and traditional handmade products, spanning over many blocks on the main road of Sukawati. It can get very interesting when you arrive at the “food department” as this area is extremely local. You should NOT go there if you have a weak constitution! The Trip from Kuta to Sukawati Art Market on average takes one hour.

About a 45 minute trip away from Kuta, in the regency of Tabanan, you are able to find a very interesting but widely ignored attraction; The Subak Museum. Subak stands for a very ingenious water irrigation manage-ment system which was developed in Bali hundreds of years ago but is still in use. A visit to this museum teaches you about Bali’s agricultural tradition with the use of numerous farming related exhibits.

Formerly known as Dreamland, New Kuta Beach looks like it is slowly but steadily transforming into one of Bali’s most luxurious development projects. New Kuta Golf, Klapa Beach Club and Greenpark Waterpark are just some of the projects which have finished over the last couple of years in this area. Enjoy some sunset cocktails at Klapa or play 18 rounds at New Kuta Golf, Bali’s popular cliff edged Golf Course.

Monkey ForestThe Monkey forest is located in Bali’s cultural capital ‘Ubud’ and roughly an hour’s trip from the major cities in the south. The Monkey forest became one of Bali’s most popular sightseeing destinations and plenty of guides put it on their selection of tours. This is because you can see plenty of wild monkeys and it’s the perfect place to go with kids. Be aware of thieving monkeys and make sure you don’t wear any sunglasses, caps or necklaces and take care of your wallet.

The Bird Markets are very local markets. The biodiver-sity of the shown birds in such a small area is simply amazing and reminds more to a Zoo then a market. Hundreds of birds are waiting for a new owner. Howev-er not only Birds can be found at Bali’s major Bird Mar-kets in Denpasar. Puppies, cats, bats, monkeys and other exotic creatures can be bought too. Warning: Most of the cages are inappropriate for the species.

Seminyak Beach is very well known. It perfectly com-bines relaxation, dining and nightlife. As with plenty of other places located on Bali’s west coast, it is a great spot to see Bali’s wonderful sunsets. Plenty of restau-rants and beach bars in every price category stretch along the area known as ‘double six’. The most popular beach club there is called Cocoon, it’s very well known for its sophisticated parties such as the Splash Party.

It is a myth that religions can’t live in peace and harmo-ny next to each other. See a Protestant and a Catholic Church next to a Buddhist or Hindu temple as well as a Muslim mosque nearby. Some of these prayer houses are open for public for a little donation and if you are in Nusa Dua or Jimbaran you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to see, maybe the only place in the world where religions are ‘that close’ to each other.

Bangli District is the only district in Bali that does not have a beach. (Bali Map)

Bali is a great place to shop. There are many Western standard shopping malls as well as low budget shopping places where the final price is up to the negotiating talent of the buyer.

Many Shopping Malls in Bali offer a wide range of products. Shoes, clothes, jewelry, souvenirs or deli-cious food. The prices are fixed but some shops offer discount vouchers for your next purchase. If the customer spends a large amount, there is a little room for some negotiation. All products in Bali’s Shop-ping Malls have western standards. Friendly service, smiling and helpful people making shopping in Bali a good experience. Negotiating is a normal practice in local markets, with street sellers and in smaller independent shops. The selection of products is plentiful. Of course, no guarantee is offered but bargain-ing and street shopping can be fun too.

Sankara Ubud Resort The word ‘sankara’ refers to a conch seashell that produces a haunting sound when blown. According to the epic Hindu poem, Mahabarata, the horn-like noise of the sankara often signaled the beginning and end of battles between oppos-ing Indian clans. In Bali it is used as a ceremonial instrument during rituals of purification to neutralize negative energy and create a peaceful ambience.

Sankara Ubud Resort is located in the traditional art village of Mas, Ubud. It is 90-minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport and just 15-minutes from the centre of cultural Ubud.

Encompassing a collection of 20 stylishly-appointed Ba-linese rooms and villas, Sankara Ubud Resort is a peaceful retreat surrounded by rice fields and coconut trees. It is a place to totally relax and discover the simple pleasures of a traditional village.

parts in Indonesia develop out of Bali’s leading tour-ism role. Although, what is a booming economy worth without development of the infrastructure? Not a lot!

Bali has understood that de-velopment of its infrastruc-ture is important for further investments, economical growth and to increase tourism on the Island of the gods. With the new Under-pass in Kuta and The Bridge from Sanur to Nusa Dua, which is also connected to

the airport, the Balinese Government was able to reduce traffic massively which now pays off for everybody coming to The Island Of The Gods.

Bali’s leading role in Indonesian tourism, based also on its strategically perfect geographic posi-tion, has not only a positive impact on Bali itself. A very important side effect of Bali’s quick devel-opment is the access to other regions in Indone-sia as more and more new flight routes are being launched, outgoing from Ngurah Rai international Airport Bali.

This means that Ngurah Rai International Airport brings an additional positive impact on the devel-opment of the economy in other parts of Indone-sia and finally it helps to increase the economy in all areas across the country.

To strengthen this progress and obviously to of-fer vacationers from all over the world a conveni-ent arrival, PT Angkasa Pura I was doing its bit and invested a huge amount of money to develop Ngurah Rai International Airport’s infrastructure.

Bali, also very well known as “Paradise Island” or “The Island of the Gods” is Indonesia’s flagship tourist destination.

Balinese people are very spiritual and have strong religious beliefs. This is probably the main point why everybody from all over the world feels at-tracted to Bali and plenty of visitors come back again and again. Plenty of international important political events take place in Bali with the target to make the world a better place and media from all over the world write about this peaceful Island.

Balinese is one out of about 300 ethnical groups populating Indonesia which consists of about 17,000 islands. All the groups have the same rights and everybody lives together in peace and harmony which guarantees to keep the amazing diversification in culture. Also, every ethnical group has its own language which makes Indonesia the most multilingual country in the world. To ensure working communication across the country, a high Indonesian language was developed called “Bahasa Indonesia”.

The Indonesian Government has taken huge steps over the last couple of years and has driven democracy forward. This step was finally one of the major pillars for the Indonesian economical growth which was found repeatedly over the last couple of years in the world’s TOP 5.

Bali with its strong economy, based on tourism, has a role model function for the rest of Indonesia. Big movements and changes in Indonesia have their starting position in Bali and plenty of other

Page 99: travelling BALI Vol. VII

The International Airport of Ngurah Rai, located in the Badung regency, can be described as Angka-sa Pura’s brand-new express gateway to Indone-sia and vice versa, the worlds access to Bali and Indonesia. Especially for the regency of Badung, which has the biggest GDP out of Bali’s 8 regen-cies where around 85% comes from tourism, will profit massively from Angkasa Pura’s I airport pro-ject as the capacity has increased dramatically.

With enormously increasing numbers in new ar-rivals, it was simply necessary to restructure the complete airport and the surrounding area. Also it was important for Angkasa Pura to go with the times and use the newest technology available for the passenger’s convenience.

B+S+C is the formula which I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport was developed on. B stands for Beauty. The distinctive design, which is a com-bination of Balinese architecture and a minimal-ist modern design, will simply impress you and makes Bali’s airport completely different to all the others in the world. S stands for safety. By using high end materials in construction and by hiring additional security staff, you can feel safe during your complete stay in and around the airport. Fi-nally we have the C, standing for convenience. An easy to understand airport structure, modern technology such as the newest elevators, escala-tors, travelators or baggage claims and obviously the increased amount of Visa terminals and pass-port controls making your arrival and departure simply comfortable.

As infrastructure is one of the most important things in a fast growing economy, with new flight routes and the enormously increased capacity, Angkasa Pura I has not only built an airport for tourists convenience, but it will also increase the economy in Badung, Bali and the whole Indone-sia.

Welcome to I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Air-port – Your personal Brand-New Express Gate-way To Paradise! - We are ready to welcome YOU and the rest of the world!

To anticipate the surge of passengers, aircraft movements and cargo at Ngurah Rai International Airport, since 1975 till 1978 airport development projects have been done by building on aviation support facilities, such as building a new interna-tional terminal. The old terminal building was con-verted into a domestic terminal, while the domes-tic terminal building was used as a cargo building, catering business, and a multi-purpose building.

In 1990, the Project Development of Ngurah Rai International Airport was re-done along with the increasing growth of the planes that used it. The developments of these facilities were divided into three stages and were called the Project Facility Airport and Aviation Safety (FBUKP).

FBUKP Project Phase I (1990-1992) includes an extension that comes with the aviobridge termi-nal, runway extension, relocation of taxiway, apron expansion, renovation and expansion of the termi-nal building, expansion of the parking lot, cargo building development, building operations, the development of air navigation facilities and supply of aircraft fuel.

FBUKP Project Phase II (1998-2000) included air-

port development undertaken by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, among others, by utilizing an area of 12 hectares of mangroves for use as aviation safety facilities.

While FBUKP Project Phase III (2011-2013) in-cluded the development of the terminal building, parking deck, and apron. The current domestic terminal area will be expanded to reach a total of 12,000 meters in width that will then be used as the international terminal. The existing interna-tional terminal will be converted into the domestic terminal. Under these conditions, Ngurah Rai Air-port will be able to accommodate up to 25 million passengers.

Ngurah Rai International Airport is not just a trans-port node or one of the economic driving forces alone, beyond business, this airport will become a new landmark for the Island.

In the context of sociology, airport infrastructure is believed to have a broader meaning, which became part of the culture and customs of Bali. Once off the plane, the passengers will be able to instantly enjoy and explore some of the cultural richness of Bali at the airport. So that the aspects of the culture, customs and religion don’t become one-dimensional they have all been highly con-sidered in the planning of the development of this airport. Together with the local government and related agencies, Angkasa Pura Airports formed a design committee before starting the construction of the airport.

The committee was also strengthened by acad-emicians from the University of Udayana, the practitioners element of Architectural Association Region Bali, team builder and traditional Balinese buildings, as well as traditional leaders in the vil-lages around the Ngurah Rai International Airport. With the committee, local wisdom could be ac-

commodated and enrich the airport development plan. The Architecture of the airports and support-ing facilities not only parallel with the existing dy-namics of technological progress, but also to pro-mote the artistic and aesthetic nuance charged customs and culture of Bali.

The exterior and interior of the airport buildings are thick with the feel of Bali, which combined with the dimensions of a cosmopolitan modernity and futuristic style.

In fact, many traditional rituals accompanied and participated in this project. The main building, which is a new passenger terminal, has a roof like an ocean wave. The Multilevel parking structure is pyramid-shaped, resembling a tiered rice field. on the interior side, very strong Balinese ornaments color this magnificent building.

While the dimensions of modernity and techno-logical progress, will look at the major equipment and the complementary airport. For example, gate handling system, which uses HBS (Hold Baggage Screening) worth Rp 150 billion.

Passenger baggage will be moved electronically and mechanically from day check-in to the air-craft approaching. This technology creates mini-mal physical contact by the officers, but much more accurate, fast, effective, and efficient. Also equipped wich x-ray sensored layers and it will be the first time this equipment has been applied to an Indonesian airport.

The combination of modern elements and Intellectual Culture of Bali
