Peru’s Northwest• Three main cities are located in

Peru’s northwest

• Trujillo, Chiclayo, and Huaraz

• There are many things to see in each city

1. Trujillo is a city rich in culture and home to the Chan Chan Citadel, as well as Huanchaco Beach

2. Chiclayo offers a glimpse of the past when touring its famous archeological sites, like the Lord of Sipán.

3. Huaraz is a city popular for being a winter sport destination because the Cordillera Blanca is located here, as well as the Huascaran National Park.

Important Facts:

Trujillo is the leading economic and tourism center in northern Peru

There is still colonial Spanish architecture throughout the city

Trujillo is known as the City of Eternal Spring because of its warm sunny weather year round.

Chan Chan CitadelUNESCO declared Chan Chan World Cultural Heritage in 1986

Known for wall structure decorated with geometric figures, zoomorphic styles and mythological beings

This ancient city was built using clay, mud, pebbles, straw and cane

Chan Chan is located in Moche Valley – next to the Pacific Ocean

Huanchaco Beach

Famous for being a surfers dream spot

Known for consistent smooth waves

Approved World Surfing Reserve by the organization Save the Waves Coalition

Caballito de totora:

Little reed horse (in English)

The caballito de totora is one of the earliest known artifacts used for surfing

The reeds grow on the north end of the beach and are fashioned into Caballitos by the locals

Chiclayo

Fourth largest city in Peru, famous for colonial architecture, natural medicines and by its fascinating archeological sites

Sipan, Túcume, Batán Grande and Huaca Rajada are the names of some of the archeological sites

The Lord of Sipan is one of the most important archeological discoveries in this area

Lord of Sipan The tomb of the Lord of

Sipan was discovered in 1987

It is located in the Huaca Rajada archeological site

It is believed that the Lord of Sipan was a royal ruler about 1600 years ago

Huaraz Located in north central Peru

Most important city in the Peruvian Andes

The Cordillera Blanca (White Mountain Range) is located in Huaraz

Popular spot for winter sports such as snowboarding as well as hiking and climbing

Cordillera Blanca – White Mountain Range The Cordillera Blanca is

vast range of snow-peaked mountains located in the Huascarán National Park and considered by climbers to be the Himalayas of Latin America

It is the highest tropical mountain range in the planet

Huascarán National ParkReasons to visit:

The park features; over eighty glaciers, one hundred-twenty glacial lakes, and thermal springs used for therapeutic properties

Different species of animals to see including the famous vicuña and the rare North Andean Huemul

Huascarán National Park was declared Mankind Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985
