Top 10 Travel Smart Phone Applications
Raoul Gomes
Background
Having spent some significant
time away exploring parts of the
world, I found the convenience of
a smart phone loaded with
applications to be paramount.
I have created a list from those
certain applications that I don't
know how I would travel in a
strange country without in the
future.
Top 10 List
1. Maps
2. Translate
3. Communication over Data
4. Travel Review
5. Accommodation
6. Currency Calculator
7. Flight Search
8. Built-in Applications
9. Online/Offline Storage
10.Road Transport
Top 10 List – Maps
Google Maps offers an offline
feature where you can
download sections of a map
and continue to explore a
city's streets whilst being
disconnected from any data
connection.
Top 10 List – Translate
Google Translate is
especially helpful when
ordering food. Often being
proficient in a language isn't
enough for understanding
local cuisine.
Point the camera with the app
enabled and translate in real
time.
Top 10 List - Communication
Skype phone calls have
improved significantly since
the last time I used them. As
long as you have a data
connection then this
application is great for
staying in touch with
friends, family, or
conducting meetings.
Top 10 List – Travel Review
Trip advisor offers reviews of
travel-related content including
checking the ratings of hotels,
restaurants, and attractions. It
is quite accurate and user
comments often have tidbits
about the surrounding areas, or
best times to visit places, etc.
Top 10 List - Accommodation
Hotels.com and booking.com for
assisting you in getting the best
prices on hotels, besides walking
into them and offering cash for
the room.
There is a new app that is
disrupting the industry called
airbnb. It allows you to rent
unique accommodations from
local hosts in anywhere you go in
the world.
Top 10 List – XE Currency Calculator
XE Currency calculator I found
was a great application used
to understand the different
currencies you may be dealing
with.
This application can store
multiple currencies, is easy to
use, and updates
automatically when there is a
data connection.
Top 10 List – Flight Search
ITA OnTheFly is a great free
flight search engine to shop
for the cheapest days and
flight airfares for any itinerary
in the world.
Skiplagged is an airfare search
engine that will make you
realize that it's sometimes
cheaper to buy more flights
than you need. It shows you
hidden city ticketing trips.
Top 10 List – Pre Installed Apps
Built in applications
which come
standard on any
smart phone such
as calculator,
calendar, alarm
clock, international
clock, and camera
will help you
significantly.
Top 10 List – Online/Offline Storage
There are many applications out there, however I’ve used and
recommend Dropbox and Google Drive. They are great for
reviewing either your itinerary, or PDF copies of tickets you
maybe have registered. Ensure that you’ve downloaded files
offline in the event that you don’t have internet connection.
Additionally, you can upload your photos from your trip as you
go.
Top 10 List – Road Transport
There are many service providers out there, however I’ve used
and recommend Uber. They are a mobile-app-based
transportation network where you can get a taxi, private car or
rideshare from your mobile phone. They connect you with a
driver in minutes in many cities around the world.
