Once upon a time, there were two animalsliving in Kali Mas. They were Sura(a shark) and Baya (a crocodile). They werefriends. They lived in peace and harmony.Everyday they ate a lot of fish and shrimps. Theyate very greedly. So the population of the fishand shrimps decreased quickly.

Baya and Sura were often hungry. They oftenfought over the food. They forgot theirfriendship. both Baya and Sura were equallystrong. None of them won the fight. Realizingthis, they became reconciled. They wanted tolive in peace and harmony as before.

Baya and Sura agreed to divide the river into two. Then, they made a border using mud and sand. Baya lived upstream and Sura lived downstream. They did not fight over the food anymore.

The dry season came. There was no wateranymore in the downstream. But there was stillenough water in the upstream. So, Sura enteredupstream to look for food. However, Baya andgot angry to saw Sura look for food in his area.Sura explained that he could not lived indownstream because there was no water inthere. Baya didn’t care. He instructed Sura toleft his area.

Then Baya and Sura fought again. None ofthem won the fight. They were equally strong. Alot of people came to the bank of the river. Theysaw the fight. Finally, Baya and Sura died.Suddenly an old man talked to people “thisevent we see today is rare. So, to remember thisevent, I gave name this place after twoanimals, that is Surabaya.

Those people agreed. So up to now peoplecalled the place “Surabaya”.
