HISTORY OF THEROMANI PEOPLE

The Romani people are original from India. They left India and started migrating in the 11th century (one thousand years ago).

They arrived in Europe for the first time around the year 1200 through the Byzantine Empire (Nowadays Turkey).

SPAIN:

The first Romani people arrived in Spain in 1415.They suffered several Persecutions and violationsof their rights.

Nowadays, they are a very important part of the Spanishculture. There are more than 500,000 gypsies in Spain.

However, we still need to do a lot of things to become really equal.

BRITAIN:

The Romanichals reachedBritain for the first time in1502 from Spain.

At that time, people thought that Roma peoplecame from Egypt, and called them Egyptians, and so Gypsies.

In Spain people thought the same, and called Roma people Egiptianos, And so Gitanos.

From Britain, the Gypsies migrated to other English Speaking countries like the United States, Canada, SouthAfrica or Australia.

There are 96,000 Gypsies in Britain, and 153,000 in the United States.

THE ROMANICHALS

APPEARANCE:

Physically, Romanichals are generally lighter than other gypsies.

This is so because during their migrations, many white people from Eastern Europe married Romani people.

As well as in Spain, British Gypsies have suffered persecution and discrimination.

During the 19th century anti-Gypsy laws were gradually repealed.

LIFE:

Romanichals are also called Travellers.

This is so because Romanichals aretraditionally a nomadic ethnic group.

The caravan in the picture is called a 'vardo'.

Romanichals are still nomadic nowadays, and they live in Caravans.

They stop at 'atching tans' or stopping places, and follow the same routes as their ancestors.

Today, they are famous for their weddings. The British Television reality 'My Big Fat Royal Gypsy Wedding' showed the spectacular celebrations and gypsy customs to the wholecountry.

OTHER ROMANI COMMUNITIES IN BRITAIN:

But not only Romanichals live in Britain. In Wales, wefind Welsh Kale people. They arrived in Britain in the 18th century.

To sum up:

The Roma People arean ethnic group thatdeparted from NorthwestIndia to the whole world.

So, there many different types of customs and traditions inside the gypsy people.
