The Jubilee Weekend
With the Jubilee weekend fast approaching, it is a great time to be patriotic, but also a great time to plan short breaks away from the
hustle and bustle of London or any city! Alternatively, if you are going to make the most of London city breaks
, there are a few activities planned for the 4 day celebration.
What’s is the Jubilee?
The Queen’s diamond Jubilee is the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne. Elizabeth II came to the throne on the 6th February 1952 and her coronation took place on the 2nd June 1952.
The Diamond Jubilee celebrations will culminate in a series of events during the Central Weekend from 2-5 June 2012
What events are planned?
There are numerous events planned that weekend, but the Queen will be attending the Epsom Derby on the Saturday 2nd June.
The Epsom Derby
The Derby is a group 1 flat horse race, which is open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It’s Britain’s richest horserace and the most prestigious of the classic 5 (2,000 Guineas Stakes, 1,000 Guineas Stakes, Epsom Oaks, Epsom Derby & St. Leger Stakes).
The first edition of this race took place on the 4 th May 1780.
What events are planned?
On the Sunday, there are two main events planned:
The Big Jubilee Lunch:
Building on the already popular Big Lunch initiative, people will be encouraged to share lunch with neighbours and friends as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. This may take the form of a traditional street party or a picnic lunch in small or larger groups. This event is being organised by the Big Lunch.
What events are planned?
The second event is the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant
A flotilla of up to one thousand boats will muster on the River Thames on 3 June 2012 to celebrate The Queen's sixty year reign
Over a thousand boats will muster on the River Thames in preparation for Her Majesty The Queen to take part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.
The formal river procession will be between 2pm and 6pm, starting upriver of Battersea Bridge and finishing downriver of Tower Bridge. The boats will muster between Hammersmith and Battersea and disperse from Tower Bridge to West India Docks.
It will be one of the largest flotillas ever assembled on the river. Rowed boats and working boats and pleasure vessels of all shapes and sizes will be beautifully dressed with streamers and Union Flags, their crews and passengers turned out in their finest rigs. The armed forces, fire, police, rescue and other services will be afloat and there will be an exuberance of historic boats, wooden launches, steam vessels and other boats of note.

What events are planned?
Monday the 4th June there will be a BBC concert held outside Buckingham Palace.
World class names are to rock the Palace for The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert.
A line up of musical stars from the worlds of rock and pop, such as Elton John, Tom Jones, Gary Barlow, Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Shirley Bassey, along with the best of classical music and musical theatre, will perform at The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert, on Monday 4th June, Buckingham Palace and the BBC announced .
The Queen will be of attendance to the concert, as well as other members of the Royal Family, but there are no confirmations yet.
The concert will be taking place on a stage built around the Queen Victoria Memorial just outside the Palace.
What events are planned?
On Tuesday the 5th June, the Diamond Jubilee weekend will culminate with a day of celebrations in central London, including a service at St Paul’s Cathedral followed by two receptions, a lunch at Westminster Hall, a Carriage Procession to Buckingham Palace and finally a Balcony appearance, Flypast, and Feu de Joie.

Carriage ProcessionAt 2.20pm, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales will depart the Palace of Westminster for Buckingham Palace, in a Carriage Procession.
The Processional Route that the Carriage Procession will take will depart from New Palace Yard, up Whitehall to Trafalgar Square, through Admiralty Arch, along the Mall, and into Buckingham Palace through the Centre Gates at 2.40pm.
There will also be many street parties in the same spirit as for the Royal Wedding last year.
