Donatello-Crucifixion "Below the screen in the same church, he made a wooden crucifix and asked his close friend, Filippo Brunelleschi, for his opinion. Filippo answered that it seemed to him that Donatello had put on the cross the body of a peasant, not the body of Jesus Christ. Donatello retorted: 'You get some wood and try to make one yourself.' Filippo returned home and started work on a crucifix."

The Basilica di Santa Croce is also one of the finest museums in Italy. In the refectory in the convent portion of the great church is an actual museum, the Museo dell'Opera di Santa Croce that was founded primarily as a memorial to those who died in the 1966 River Arno flooding.

For the end wall of their refectory the Franciscans commissioned Taddeo Gaddi to paint a Last Supper, an appropriate subject for the friars` dining hall. Above the last Supper Gaddi painted a Tree of Life, a devotional subject derived from the writings of the Franciscan St Bonaventure.
