2. By Air
From Manila, there are limited domestic flights. However, travelers
can book themselves with any chartered flights from Manila to
Subic. There are seaplanes on standby in Manila and other parts of
the country to take tourists to the Freeport Zone.
In some of the islands, there are flights that travel to the
DiosdadoMacapagal International Airport (DMIA) in Angeles City,
Pampanga. From DMIA, land transfer can be arranged. For foreign
tourists landing at the Ninoy Aquino , they can take a taxi or
leased car going to Subic.
The Subic Bay International Airport is located at Cubi Point of the
former US Naval Station. The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority is
intensifying its efforts to add more Asian carriers.
3. By Land
The primary means of land transfer from Ninoy Aquino International
Airport to Olongapo is by bus. From the airport, there are buses
that leave for Subic Bay on hour intervals from 4 am to 7 pm daily.
Air-conditioned buses charge reasonable fares for a three-hour trip
depending on the traffic.
Two bus lines namely Victory Liner and Saulog Transit plow the
route Manila-Subic. The former leaves an hour apart from 4 am to 6
pm from four different terminals in Pasay, Caloocan, Sampaloc, and
Cubao going to its Olongapo terminal. The latter, on the other
hand, has trips leaving one hour apart between 2 am to 2 pm from
Cavite City.
Before making a trip to Subic Bay Freeport was a hassle since one
would need to take the Gapan-Olongapo Road in the San Fernando Exit
of the North Expressway. The trip would take about 2 to 2
hours.
However, with the new Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), the
trip now takes just 45 minutes. Constructed with a budget of $27
billion grant from the Japanese government, the spanking new road
extends 94 kilometers connecting Subic Bay to Clark Field and
Tarlac City.
4. By Sea
At present, there is a ferry service from the Cultural Center of
the Philippines going to Orion, Bataan. Advanced booking for land
transfer should be done with Interisland Tours and Travel.
Currently, a plan is on the works for a cruise ship terminal going
to Subic Bay. This new terminal could lead the way to a new ferry
service.
5. Public Transport
The easiest way to travel around Olongapo and Subic Bay is through
taxi. Majority of the services in the area are metered but most
drivers do not usually use the meter. If this is the case, the best
thing to do is to look for another taxi since quoted prices will be
most likely twice the amount of metered fare. Drivers would be most
grateful if they would receive banknotes in small denominations and
a tip for excellent service.
Another option is to look for private taxi services owned and
operated by hotels. However, they are five times more expensive
than a regular metered fare. Although there are bus services in the
area, they are usually crowded and the route is restricted.
A fun travel option is to take a jeepney. While foreign tourists
are more preferred, local residents enjoy a jeepney ride as well
especially when the destination is just short and there is no bus
route. Jeepney service is accessible 24 hours.
Whether its land, air, or sea, going to Subic Bay Freeport is
convenient and affordable.
